The season ended six months ago, and I still can't believe there wasn't a house cleaning. Normally, I'm over things and ready for the new season, but not this time. It's just a real gut punch to realize the owner is the problem, because owners never fire themselves.

Amazing how different the story coming out of the Texans is this year compared to this time last year where all we were hearing was about how he had played in an NFL style defense and was NFL ready.

Actually what I probably meant is it's nice to hear someone that's not making excuses or accepting the blame for someone else.

What I read into that is, "There's a chance his career may be salvageable."

If Kareem keeps up the awful play, yet continues to have his name thrown around with controversial character things (off the field), his career is going to be a short one.

Schefter: If and when agreement is reached, all players with 4, 5 and 6 years of service are expected to be unrestricted free agents.

    Texans have any "key" FAs?

i think it's more for players who have been playing out their restricted free agency since their rookie year.

Players like Mario Williams come to mind.

That would make Mario a UFA next year, not this year.

ahh, so basically most drafted players starting unrestricted free agency.

disregard my last post about Mario.

so, will this mean that the rookie contracts shrink from now on?

I assume this is a compromise with the rookie pay scale.

By allowing 4 year players to hit the UFA market, they can cash in on their performance earlier and more freely, rather than getting paid by getting taken high in the draft.

Less risk for owners, and more monetary reward for proven veterans.

    from the chron:

Daniels has already been resigned, IIRC.

One other thing to consider, if 6th year players are no longer able to be restricted, then the Texans might consider trading Mario this year if they feel he doesn't fit into their new defensive scheme... rather than just letting him walk away after this season without getting anything in return.

    Just thinking out loud here.

Butler gonna get paid... prolly by the Redskins if his tweets are any indication. Cody is under contract too, I believe he resigned before the lockout.

Guys we're in danger of losing that are relatively "key" are Butler, Leach, and Jacoby Jones.

That would actually be a good thing IMO. I think by forcing Rick Smith's hand we might get some good return for Mario. I don't think this will be a winning season especially with the lose of OTA's and the new Defensive system.

Trade him to Denver for Elvis (if he's healthy) and some secondary help if there's anything there to salvage.

You're right, Cody is on the hook through 2011.

Butler is likely gone, hopefully Leach comes back, and Jacoby... well, his battlefightin' days may be over.

Trade him for a couple of first round picks so Kubiak can get some more battlefighters who will be ready to compete by 2018, the year they are targeting for a "real playoff push"?

Honestly, I could see him being traded for some top-flight defensive backfield help and draft considerations.

If the Texans feel confident in their front 7 and Wade's new scheme, they might as well gamble on "winning now" and go get some actual DBs to help them.
