For Jones, Texans, there is pressure in potential

The Houston Texans have cast some votes of confidence this calendar year, which is to say the Houston Texans believe that, with a little more drilling, some golden potential will come squirting from the earth.

And who's to say that isn't true?

Gary Kubiak, despite a measure of fan protest, remains the coach. Jacoby Jones, despite four seasons of occasionally frustrating play, got a new contract. It is a bit of a stretch to say these two men's fortunes are linked, yet there is a sense with this Texans team at this time that they are either going to be good under this regime, with this core of players, or they aren't, and Jacoby Jones is going to become a serious No. 2 receiver now or he isn't.

Jones has not thought about it in those terms.

"No," he said. "You take pressure if you make it pressure. I take it as just another year on the gridiron."

The new contract might have relieved some of that pressure, but so did the season that earned it. That's the good news. Jones is coming off his best season. He had 51 catches for 562 yards and three touchdowns in 2010. It was his best year in terms of catches and yards. The bad news is, those numbers made him the fourth-most-productive pass-catcher on the team, behind Andre Johnson, running back Arian Foster and Kevin Walter.

What isn't news at all is that Jones turned 27 this summer. There is no real significance to this birthday, unless you still perceived Jones as a young player. He isn't. He is old enough to have developed some self-awareness, old enough to see 23-year-old Jones as a different person.

"I was a little knucklehead," he said.

If the first step to fixing a problem is admitting there is one, Jones is well past that. So this season, for Jones, is about finding out whether there is a problem, or whether the player Jones has been is the player he is and will be. In other words, what if all this potential we have assumed hides inside him isn't really there? In still more words, why doesn't anyone think Kevin Walker, who also had 51 catches last season, hasn't reached his potential?

I'm not saying Jones doesn't possess the ability to be an excellent receiver, but I am saying what we call potential is often just a synonym for our own simplistic perceptions. Jacoby Jones looks like a great receiver, so (we think) he should be.

But the only way to prove potential is to become kinetic.

The circumstances are the same for the team as a whole. The Texans seem like they should be a good team, because they have taken on the form of a good team. They have a good quarterback, solid running game, a phenomenal receiver and a No. 1 overall pick at outside linebacker. They basically have done all the main things that successful football teams do, except become successful.

This is a terrible frustration, and someone needs to be blamed, and usually that means the head coach is peaking at the local real estate market.

It doesn't mean Kubiak and Jones are the same. For both, though, it's just that it feels like there is more to be gotten out of what they have.

And if it doesn't happen now, we'll have to wonder if the Texans have just been drilling for dirt.

Having tutored one of the best in Denver, Owen Daniels' coaches see a lot of Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe in their tight end here

Early during his 11-season run as Denver's offensive coordinator, Gary Kubiak was privy to a conversation between Mike Shanahan, the Broncos' head coach and Kubiak's former boss, and the team's talented young tight end — a former seventh-round draft choice named Shannon Sharpe.

Fresh off consecutive seasons of 80-plus receptions, Sharpe was already an All-Pro, virtually a star.

"He was a H-back, and he never blocked anybody," Kubiak said Tuesday. "I remember when Mike called him in and said we've got a pretty good running back (Terrell Davis), and if you get better at blocking, we're going to the Super Bowl."

After that chat, Sharpe caught 80 passes in a season only once more, became an effective and tireless blocker, helped his teams win three Super Bowls (two in Denver and one in Baltimore) and, this past weekend, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

To Kubiak, portions of the progression seem all too familiar.

"Owen's career has kind of been that way," he said.

That would be Owen Daniels, who returned to the Texans' practice field Tuesday after a bout with the stomach flu. Now, Kubiak isn't suggesting Daniels will end up in Canton, Ohio, nor is he predicting the Texans will win it all any time soon. But when Kubiak and tight ends coach Brian Pariani, who also mentored Sharpe in Denver, look at Daniels, they can't help but think of Sharpe.

And that's all rather humbling for Daniels, a former quarterback at Wisconsin.

"Obviously, Shannon is one of the best ever," he said. "He's a beast."

Which would make Daniels what, exactly?

Learning from the best

Because of injury, he hasn't completed a full season since 2008, when he posted career highs of 70 receptions for 862 yards. He admits to watching his peers around the league and implementing aspects of what has made them successful, mentioning Tony Gonzalez in Atlanta, Antonio Gates in San Diego, Zach Miller in Seattle and Chris Cooley in Washington.

Maybe, on some level, he doesn't consider himself their equal. But his coaches do.

"The thing about 'O.D.' is that he's such a great athlete and has such good body quickness that he's able to get in and out of breaks and do the things he has to do against linebackers and safeties," Pariani said. "But the other thing he does is he's so good on the line of scrimmage with some spring. He has great balance and hand placement and stuff like that, and he's a worker.

"That's what makes him special in what we do."

Added Kubiak: "Committing to being better on the line of scrimmage has been the key."

So much so that now, like Sharpe throughout most of the 1990s, Daniels has become the standard at the position in the Texans' Shanahan/Kubiak version of the West Coast offense. The tight end can't be an extra offensive lineman with limited mobility, but he also must be willing to sacrifice precious touches.

"They're a lot alike - very good playmaking receivers," Kubiak said. "But for what they do catching the ball and running routes, they both have to work really hard to be blockers. They'll never be dominant blockers, but when they work at it, they're good at what they do."

Dreessen: No one better

Sharpe was a physical specimen - a sculpted 225-pounder - who almost always went up against larger opponents. Daniels (6-3, 242) is a little bigger but still is viewed as undersized - a label at which fellow Texans tight end Joel Dreessen openly scoffed Tuesday.

"Owen's very, very special at what he does, and that's how it goes," Dreessen said. "He's very gifted athletically as far as running routes, separation and patience. As far as beating man coverage, he's the best, in my opinion."

Dreessen paused, then said: "And he's a technician when it comes to blocking."

Three-man running back battle heats up

Double D

Several receivers made memorable catches throughout the day — veteran Kevin Walter and undrafted free agent Jeff Maehl — but no one was more impressive than Dorin Dickerson.

“He’s getting better,” Gary Kubiak said. “He’s a big guy that can make plays with his body.”

The second-year product of Pittsburgh caught nearly everything thrown his way, even passes that standout recent free-agent acquisition Johnathan Joseph swore he had a bead on.

In 7-on-7s, Dickerson elevated over Joseph for the grab, drawing a round of cheers from the spectators. Over on the sideline moments later, Joseph said to his teammates, “I have to make that — that’s on me.”

Still going

The running back battle continued.

Arian Foster remains sidelined, and Ben Tate didn’t work due to sore hamstring. But the other three — Derrick Ward, Steve Slaton and Chris Ogbonnaya — carried the load Tuesday and there wasn’t much of a drop-off between the trio.

Ward has the experience as Foster’s main backup, while Slaton used to be the featured back.

But it’s Ogbonnaya who is impressing, making an earnest bid for a roster spot. He doesn’t dance, and once his 225-pound frame in a hole, it’s not there for long. He can move.

“I tell you what — he wants to be on this team,” Gary Kubiak said. “You all see it — you watch practice. It’s fun to watch. He’s got a lot of confidence in what he’s doing. He’s making a big push.”

Love the spirit

As players took a water break, Bryan Braman, an undrafted rookie agent linebacker from West Texas A&M, used the moment to either grab some attention for himself or genuinely express his appreciation for physical exertion when the temperature in the high-80s.

“You gotta love your job! Every rep!”

DeMeco Ryans, the veteran, was clearly amused. So was defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who couldn’t stop smiling.

Lots of free time

Rockets point guard Kyle Lowry showed up for the morning practice. Dressed in a white T-shirt and shorts, Lowry has the build of a safety — and the physical style on the court to match.

Asked how he’s been spending his days because of the NBA’s lockout, he said, “I’m working on my golf game.”

He left the session with right tackle Eric Winston, but the Philadelphia native made it clear he’s not a Texans fan. He’s all Eagles, all of the time, so naturally, he’s excited about all of the moves the organization made. He literally laughed at all of the naysayers, though.

“They’re all out there hating on us,” he said, smiling.

On target

Backup quarterback Matt Leinart continued to impress his teammates, coaches, fans and media. Leinart was on target in every drill, showing a nice touch on passes into the corner of the end zone and impressive velocity on passes over the middle and down the sideline.

“He’s been very good,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “He’s been exceptional. He’s very comfortable with what he’s doing. He’s a guy who’s got his confidence back as a player and a pro after everything we went through last year. I think you’re going to watch him grow every day.”

AJ for mayor

Anytime receiver Andre Johnson gets his hands on the ball, fans go crazy. He ran a crossing route this morning, caught a perfect pass from Matt Schaub, turn and ran into the end zone for touchdown. The fans went crazy cheering for him.

Puts on a show

Jeff Maehl, an undrafted receiver, put on a show in the morning practice and caught everything thrown to him. Working from the opponents’ 15-yard line, Maehl beat cornerback Shaun McManus and hauled in a beautifully thrown pass from Matt Leinart.

Playing takeaway

Second-year receiver Dorin Dickerson is off to a great start with the Texans. Even though he missed an offseason of coaching because of the lockout, Dickerson is a different receiver. He runs precise routes, makes quick cuts, shows excellent speed and athleticism and has been catching just about everything. On a fade route in the left corner, Matt Leinart threw a perfect pass, and the 6-2 Dickerson went high to take the ball away from 5-11 cornerback Johnathan Joseph for a touchdown.

Walter gets two

Receiver Kevin Walter caught two touchdown passes from Matt Schaub. Walter split safeties Glover Quin and Danieal Manning on one touchdown pass. He beat cornerback Johnathan Joseph on the second one.

Jackson steps up

Cornerback Kareem Jackson made a great play on a fade pass to Andre Johnson in the end zone. Johnson went up for what should have been a touchdown, but Jackson showed excellent ball skills by stripping it for an incompletion.

“The thing I like is we’re getting our hands on more balls,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “We’re making more interceptions. We’ve got playmakers back there that can do that. Danieal Manning has made a few. You’ve seen what Johnathan (Joseph) can do. I just think we have more playmaking capability back there than we’ve had in the past.”

Seen and heard

Brian Cushing still walks around with a big bag on ice on his right knee, but the linebacker looks to be in outstanding shape… Recent free-agent acquisition Danieal Manning received a huge cheer when he broke free on a kickoff return during special teams drills… Mister Alexander, an undrafted free agent linebacker, ran sprints on an auxiliary field by himself… Second-year tight end Garrett Graham deposited his breakfast on the grass as he vomited during drills. But Graham didn’t miss any time, remaining on the field.

Texans notes: Kubiak concerned about injured Cushing

Concern for Cushing

Gary Kubiak expressed optimism about the steps taken by DeMeco Ryans in his comeback from a serious Achilles tendon injury, wondering aloud if the inside linebacker might play Monday against the New York Jets.

But the coach's tone was decidedly different when he spoke of Brian Cushing, who remains sidelined after undergoing surgery on his right knee in the offseason.

"I'm concerned," Kubiak said Tuesday. "He needs to get out here and go to work with his buddies. Obviously he had surgery done and we didn't have him all offseason, so we couldn't just throw him out there and watch him. We thought he needed a good week or so … the plan all along has been Thursday, but it could very well be (today).

"It's hard to be at your best when you're missing a lot of time, so we need to get him out there."

Dickerson dazzles

Injury update

Rookie cornerback Roc Carmichael sprained his shoulder Sunday and will probably miss a week of camp, Gary Kubiak said.… Dominique Barber was back out in the afternoon session, dealing with a thumb issue. … Kubiak said there hasn't been a decision on whether Andre Johnson, who dislocated a finger last week, will play against the Jets.

Auction time

The Texans on Tuesday announced that the proceeds from the organization's game-day auction for the Monday night contest against the Jets will be donated in support of the Berry children, the three Houston siblings who survived an automobile accident in early July but whose parents did not.

Items up for auction include a framed autographed authentic Matt Schaub jersey, a framed autographed picture commemorating Arian Foster's 2010 NFL rushing title, a helmet signed by recent free-agent acquisitions Johnathan Joseph and Danieal Manning and more. The auction will take place in the concourse behind Section 140, opening when the stadium gates do at 5:30 p.m. and lasting until halftime.

Also, fans can provide assistance by texting BERRY to 85944 to make a $10 donation to the HJCF Berry Family Foundation for Orphans. For more info about the Berry Children's Trust Fund, go to www.theberrychildren.org.

Also, the Texans and XFINITY are teaming up to auction more than 20 practice jerseys worn by the team during this year's training camp. Nose for success
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips likes what he sees in a pair of players vying for time in the middle of his 3-4

When Wade Phillips was hired as the new defensive coordinator and the Texans switched to a 3-4 scheme, just about everyone figured he would need to draft or sign a 350-pound nose tackle to anchor the line.

But acquiring a new nose tackle was never an issue for Phillips. After watching tape of last season's games and practices, he determined Shaun Cody and Earl Mitchell were ideal for what he wanted on the nose.

In Phillips' 3-4, the nose tackle is smaller, quicker and responsible for one gap. In a traditional 3-4, the nose tackle is a road grader who takes up two blockers because he's responsible for two gaps.

In their second week of camp, Cody and Mitchell have rewarded Phillips' faith in them.

Last season, when Cody and Mitchell were on the field, they often played on the nose in the 4-3.

'Nothing different'

"When we heard what he (Phillips) said about us, it made us feel good," Mitchell said. "Obviously, he had confidence in Shaun and I.

"What we're doing is nothing different from a 4-3 nose. You pretty much penetrate the gap and try to get up the field. … I fire off the ball, work with my hands and try to get in the backfield. I feel like I'm doing a good job of that."

Cody (6-4, 304) is a seven-year veteran who's working with the first team.

"It's pretty much the same thing as last season," Cody said. "As far as technique, there's not too much difference. There's still one gap.

"When I met with Wade after he was hired, he told me if I played hard for him, he'd put me in position to make plays. I'm happy with the way things have gone so far."

Mitchell (6-3, 295) is playing in his second season. He's expected to get a lot of playing time Monday when the Texans host the New York Jets in the preseason opener.

"I feel more comfortable on the nose now that I've gotten more repetitions," Mitchell said. "I'm comfortable with the guys I'm going against, and I'm learning a lot."

Competition is wide open

During his distinguished coaching career, Phillips has used nose tackles of all shapes and sizes. He watches tape and identifies who he likes.

"Earl's a powerful, active guy who's learning what we're trying to do," Phillips said. "He's looked good so far. He can really run, which gives him an advantage. And I think he can rush the passer, and not all (nose tackles) can do that.

"Cody is the consummate veteran, a real good technique player. He hardly ever makes a mistake. He knows where he's supposed to be and what he's supposed to do. He doesn't let guys get off on the linebackers."

Phillips is not concerned with who's running with the first team and who's not.

"We're not looking at that right now," he said. "It's who can play and who can help us. Everybody has a chance to win a job in preseason."

It's hard not to pull for Ogbonnaya

It's one thing to be recruited by the head football coach on the way into college. It's another thing to be recruited by the school president on the way out.

Texans running back Chris Ogbonnaya has experienced both. First, there was the pitch from Mack Brown.

Ogbonnaya had physical skills, good grades and plenty of the things other high school kids have when Brown made his pitch. What made him different was the pain he had endured.

One brother died in a car accident while a student at the University of Houston in 2002. Three months later, another brother died in Ogbonnaya's arms of congestive heart failure.

Brown's pitch to the Strake Jesuit star struck a chord when the University of Texas coach spoke of family, healing and togetherness. Almost a decade later, there were things said that Ogbonnaya will not repeat.

"It was a very personal conversation," Ogbonnaya said. "I'll just say he's a great man."

Ogbonnaya says that even though he didn't accomplish nearly all the things he wanted to during his time at Texas. Instead of being bitter, he is thankful for the opportunity to have gone there in the first place.

But that's not the best part of his story. That came later, after Ogbonnaya had finished his football eligibility and was trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life.

That's when he received an even more impressive recruiting sales pitch, this one from UT president Bill Powers. Like dozens of others at Texas, Powers had been touched by Ogbonnaya's toughness, dignity, brains and discipline.

Weighing his options

After Ogbonnaya finished a double major in corporate communications and history, and as he began work on his masters in advertising, Powers approached him about remaining at Texas to pursue a law degree.

"We became very close during my time at Texas," Ogbonnaya said. "He used to be dean of the law school and thought that would be a good path for me. I looked at it. But when I was presented with the opportunity to play in the National Football League, I couldn't pass that up. Hopefully, I can have some longevity here."

There's also this other career path Ogbonnaya has been considering.

"I'm interested in what you guys do," he said.

When he says this after Tuesday morning's sweltering practice, I look behind me to see if a doctor or car salesman had strolled up.

"Some sports broadcasting or writing," he said. "Matt probably had a great affect on me."

KBME's Matt Jackson and Ogbonnaya became friends when both attended Southminster Presbyterian Church in Missouri City. After the death of Ogbonnaya's brothers, Jackson and his family helped the Ogbonnaya family get through their tough times.

" We grew up together in the church," Ogbonnaya said. "When my dad used to go to Nigeria, Matt would come over and take care of us. When I lost my brothers, he was a very instrumental part of our family. We've been very close."

Ifegwu Ogbonnaya, 19, was killed in an accident in 2002, and Jonathan Ogbonnaya, 14, died three months later during a pickup basketball game.

"I was there with him and tried to administer CPR," Chris Ogbonnaya said. "I did everything I could."

He has four surviving brothers and sisters, and a father to whom he is close. They comforted one another as did Jackson and his family. But Chris Ogbonnaya was smothered by grief for a long time.

"Going to Strake Jesuit and playing football became my gateway," he said. "I went through a tough time that year. But the funny thing is I became closer to football. I would say it helped save my life, along with my family and friends. My father was the most instrumental. He taught me to be a man and to be disciplined."

The St. Louis Rams took him in the seventh round of the 2009 draft and, in 11/2 seasons there, he played in two games and carried the ball 11 times. He was released last season and signed to the Texans practice squad.

'Why not me?'

He came into Texans training camp behind Arian Foster, Derrick Ward, Ben Tate and Steve Slaton on the depth chart. It's tough to imagine the Texans carrying more than three backs, and Foster and Ward are locks.

After a week of training camp, it's impossible to know how it will shake out. But Ogbonnaya has opened eyes with a string of dazzling plays.

"I tell you what, he wants to be on this team," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "You all see it. It's fun to watch. He's got a lot of confidence in what he's doing. He's making a big push."

Ogbonnaya says he will not look at the depth chart or try to come up with where he might fit in.

"I'm just taking every day as an opportunity to get better," he said. "I'm trying to compete. There's always somebody coming out of nowhere, and I always tell myself, 'Why not me?' "

Yeah, i've been hesitant to get too excited about him but it's hard not to be optimistic with all of his compliments.

Winston is a good tackle. And all you hear is how Watt has been manhandling him time and time again. I get kind of excited about a possible blitz from Daniel Manning off the same side as Watt and Mario. We should be getting some good pressure on the qb this year.
