This offseason has sucked ass. I was really hoping we would do something noteworthy. We almost made the playoffs last year, a couple significant additions would have made all the differance. Seems like we havent done anything big though. Maybe the mere absence of injuries is all we need though.
OTA's start May 16th. From what I understand, this offseason was not the one to make a bunch of high profile moves because of the salary cap. Next year will be. I don't have a problem with this offseason. We've done a lot of low profile moves to help our #1 problem - depth.
Would you like the Texans to sign another Anthony Weaver? Or Ahman Green? Or Eric Moulds? Or trade for another Phillip Buchanon?
If we can keep off the injury bug, continue to see improvement from our young additions (MW, Schaub, Jacoby, Okoye, Ryans), and get a slightly more favorable schedule this year (last year was pretty tough), we'll be a lock for the playoffs. This offseason has suited us well for need.
Was Eric Moulds really that bad? Everytime I watched Carr threw him nothing but dump passes almost straight to the sideline when Carr had no other options. I don't think I ever saw him catch a pass on a route.
Anyone read this article from KC Joyner about vertical cornerbacks on ESPN? http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/columns/story?columnist=joyner_kc&id=3374798 Gets me pumped up about the secondary, heres the excerpt on Fred Bennett.
Great find! Bennett is already one of my favorite players, he stepped up big time when we needed a CB the most. I think we'll see Molden contribute sometime next season and he also has the ability to play S as well, so when D-Rob comes back, our secondary could be looking pretty good.
we didn't "almost" make the playoffs last year; we were well-removed from playoff consideration. and do fans really still have this type of simplistic approach? that big (which is such a relative, ill-defined term) somehow translates to success? they don't have a lot of cap space and they desperately need to build their depth. given those two items, i'd say their offseason was, on paper, successful. let's leave the "big" moves to the 49ers.
anybody watch todd mcshay's analysis on the texans espn page? huh? didn't we trade down from the #18 to #26 and pick up the Raven's 3rd and 6th round picks?
Chargers would've taken Brown at #27 “We came up one pick short,” said Turner, who along with the rest of the Chargers brass watched Houston trade into the 26th spot and take tackle Duane Brown of Virginia Tech. “One way or another, something is not going to get filled,” said Smith, who had just five draft picks to work with this year because of two 2007 trades and the selection of defensive back Paul Oliver in last summer's supplemental draft. For all those that think we reached. It's funny how experts make assumptions about where players will go. Nobody but the teams that have watched extensive footage of these players and interviewed them multiple times really knows the real value of each player. So there were a lot of tackles taken in the first round...so what? That doesn't mean we reached- there was just a lot of talent at that position.
no matter what the facts say, so called experts will always have something negative to say about the texans. its sort of a franchise trademark, texans and 2nd guessing, like the oilers and heartbreak.
We traded down...so we probably didn't have much say on were we could end up exactly so if we were +/- a few spots and got the guy we wanted, I fine with that. So far the Rick and Kubs have done a pretty job at drafting so we shall see how this class does....
some fans think it's only "big" if they've heard of the guy. that makes sense since, you know, fans do the actual scouting for a team.
There are so many predictions in the Schedule thread, so lets just put this one up. My predictions: 1 Sept. 7 at Pittsburgh Steelers 1 p.m. L - In Pittsburgh, and is their home opener. Don't like our chances. 2 Sept. 14 Baltimore Ravens 4:15 p.m. W - A Ravens team with a new coach, shaky QB, and the only team to give Miami a win last season. 3 Sept. 21 at Tennessee Titans 1 p.m. W - The hell with Vince Young. 4 Sept. 28 at Jacksonville Jaguars 1 p.m. W - We own them. No reason to lose to them this game, as long as we are healthy. 5 Oct. 5 Indianapolis Colts 1 p.m. W - This is finally a win. AJ and company stay healthy. 6 Oct. 12 Miami Dolphins 1 p.m. W - The Dolphins? We better not lose this one is what I say. 7 Oct. 19 Detroit Lions 4:05 p.m. W - Detroit still searching for an identity. These guys are pretenders and our D can contain Kitna and their RB's. 8 Oct. 26 Bye W - I'm sure we can win this one. 9 Nov. 2 at Minnesota Vikings 1 p.m. W - Peterson is a beast, but here is to hoping Amobi eats him for lunch this game. Their don't have a strong receiver core, and D-Rob will probably be back for this game (especially after a bye). I call a win on this one. 10 Nov. 9 Cincinnati Bengals 1 p.m. W - Not the same Cincy from even two years ago. They have been on the decline, and I don't see that changing this season. 11 Nov. 16 at Indianapolis Colts 1 p.m. L - Peyton will want revenge. 12 Nov. 23 at Cleveland Browns 1 p.m. L - I hate Cleveland. 13 Dec. 1 Jacksonville Jaguars (Mon.) 8:30 p.m. W - Our boys always get hyped up for primetime, and once again we own the Jags. This is a win. 14 Dec. 7 at Green Bay Packers 1 p.m. L - The cold is too much. 15 Dec. 14 Tennessee Titans 1 p.m. W - Hey Vince, you aren't coming to Houston to win either. 16 Dec. 21 at Oakland Raiders 4:05 p.m. W - DA RAIDAAAS! 17 Dec. 28 Chicago Bears 1 p.m. L - Season closer and we rev up for the playoffs. Bears win this one as we just mostly play our backups and rest our starters. Record: 11-5
Bro, you have an 8-game winning streak in there, and you have the Texans at 8-1 entering week 11. Pretty bold, there! That's a tough schedule. It could just as easily play out like this: Sept. 7 at Pittsburgh Steelers 1 p.m. L, 0-1 Sept. 14 Baltimore Ravens 4:15 p.m. W, 1-1 Sept. 21 at Tennessee Titans 1 p.m. L, 1-2 Sept. 28 at Jacksonville Jaguars 1 p.m. L, 1-3 Oct. 5 Indianapolis Colts 1 p.m. L, 1-4 Oct. 12 Miami Dolphins 1 p.m. W, 2-4 Oct. 19 Detroit Lions 4:05 p.m. W, 3-4 Oct. 26 Bye Nov. 2 at Minnesota Vikings 1 p.m. L, 3-5 Nov. 9 Cincinnati Bengals 1 p.m. W, 4-5 Nov. 16 at Indianapolis Colts 1 p.m. L, 4-6 Nov. 23 at Cleveland Browns 1 p.m. L, 4-7 Dec. 1 Jacksonville Jaguars (Mon.) 8:30 p.m. L, 4-8 Dec. 7 at Green Bay Packers 1 p.m. L, 4-9 Dec. 14 Tennessee Titans 1 p.m. W, 5-9 Dec. 21 at Oakland Raiders 4:05 p.m. W, 6-9 Dec. 28 Chicago Bears 1 p.m. L, 6-10 ...I think it ends up somewhere in the middle. I'm predicting 8-8 and hoping for 9-7. (Well, I'm hoping for 19-0, but that's the fan in me talking.)
It sucks being in such a tough division. We know the Colts will be good. A lot of our season's success will ride on how much improvement Vince Young (and by extension, the Titans) and the Jags improve. If we take care of business in our division, which is to say we go 4-2 or better, then I have every confidence that we make the playoffs. Edit: Also, that kind of excites me to read that report on Bennett. I knew from what I saw with my naked eye that he showed a lot of potential to be a great cover corner (I know he has aspirations to be a great tackling corner too...but I don't see that happening). Nice to see there are some stats that kind of back up what I remember seeing. If Dunta can come back and resemble his old self, this secondary could suddenly turn from one of the team's biggest weaknesses into a huge strength. Might be nice to see what Dunta can do, stat-wise, in a season when teams are suddenly forced to throw to his side of the field more often. Might finally start seeing those INT numbers we know he is capable of.
