Really? We have barely seen both play LT in the NFL. Are you going based of college stats? I know we've all forgotten that Howard wasn't able to beat out Matt Kalil for the LT spot in training camp his rookie year. He hasn't played LT since.

I’m going based on every report that came out about Dillard showed he was struggling mightily during camp. I’m basing this off of the many Eagle fans who have little faith in Dillard.

And I place the blame on Tytus not beating out Matt Kalil on a lack of foresight by Devlin and BoB. IIRC the plan with Tytus was to ease him into the line by starting him out at guard but he performed so well and Sentrell Henderson was so bad they gave him a go at RT and he continued his solid play before he got hurt.

Meanwhile, Mike Devlin is still employed.

Any real chance bill belichick resigns from the patriots if things don’t go his way in the off-season? I think it could be a possibility he’s kinda of fed up about some of the moves that were made last offseason and now he has a team that have a losing record with a qb he doesn’t want.

    would y’all welcome him here?

Was thinking tonight on Texans' contract-life plan with DW4, considering draft picks, thinking about where one guy projects is, I believe, where the team picks in the mid-rounds this year.
How would Sam Ehlinger sound as a true understudy, and not just a mere 2nd-stringer? He projects 3rd-4th round, would be in the Dak category of players; runs well, compensates for non-nuclear arm, intense competitive fire. And - most importantly - would be the bridge to a rebuild if, Heaven forbid in a couple of years, the team and Watson reach a point where getting something positive back for him in a trade is a lot more likely than actually winning something on the field.
Hope the new managing regime starts to work on hedging long-term bets; the city deserves a serious football partner.

It would be an extremely "Texan" thing to draft a backup QB in the 3rd round...

No, they're not going to trade Watson for a rebuild. This isn't the NBA. You can trade WR's and RB's who may have a shorter shelf-life of elite years, sorta what they were trying to do with Hopkins last year (albeit terrible execution), and what other teams were able to do with some WR's. You can't trade QB's (let alone elite QB's) and expect to jump-start anything.... because you'll still be unsure whether or not you've found the one thing that is the hardest to fine in the NFL... an elite QB..

And yet, that isn't necessarily consonant with a BAD idea. To the point- how's your confidence level in the current 2nd-stringer? Let's just consider the law of averages, and whether DW4's number comes up in the form of a season-ending injury behind a bad O-line (not feeling any sense of exponential improvement there in 2021). Wouldn't it be better to turn to someone who's not destined to wear a polo on the sidelines in the next 2-4 years?
Just saying... Ehlinger has that competitive "IT" and while he's not a generational prospect, he could win you a game on guile and guts, if not with a set of transcendent tools. IMO his peak would be Phil Rivers with better wheels - he'd be a good hedge.

I would be surprised if Ehlinger was drafted in the 3rd round and would be shocked if he's anything but a career backup.

Even if he's with the 6th round nobodies, I'd do it... remember what happened after Drew Bledsoe got hurt, 20-odd years ago... who saw the GOAT coming?

The Texans have far more holes to fill than the 2nd string QB.

There are Sam Ehlingers available every year in the draft that have "it". Colt McCoy probably had more "it" and has carved out a nice career as a backup. If your hypothetical plays out and Watson's career ends, they will be looking for their next franchise QB and can draft/groom however they please... but you don't waste first half draft picks on a position that is already locked in.

Barring some miracle of discovery and/or criminal oversight/ignorance, the Texans aren't going to be able to address specific needs at key positions in their current draft slot with the talent available in mid-late rounds, so why not go with the best-player-available / hedging-your-strengths approach? It's worked in Green Bay; Favre - Rodgers - Love, as an example. OR- you can light candles and PRAY that you find quality secondary help, run stoppers on D and run blockers on the other side, with the 8 mid- and late-round picks they ostensibly have this Spring. Let's just say that picking up Ehlinger with one of them would make more sense than trying to convert a water polo player into a TE with a 3rd rounder.

Watson is nowhere near the stage of his career when the Packers made those moves.

I guess you’re just a closet Ehlinger fan. Good luck following his career wherever he ends up.
