http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/columnist?id=1544641 Well this changes the idea of the Texans getting Andre at #5. No way the Jets would let him fall past them.
There have been som eextremely minor rumblings that Detroit still could take someone other than Rogers. They are very miniscule but with the Palmer signing they are free to negotiate with anyone else. They have reportedly talked to Newman, Johnson, and Suggs along with Rogers. The feeling is they are doing it as posturing since Rogers agents have had some notable hold out in the past and Detroit really wants to avoid that. It seems like they are gauging Rogers and trying to see if he will cause contract problems. But the consensus remains that they are taking him and just using the other three for leverage. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/columnist?id=1544350
Max I think you overstate the ability of recievers to provide protection for your quarterback. While it's true that a great, not just good, reciever causes the defense to abandon the eight man box defense and commit both safties to pass coverage your line is so bad that defenses don't have to do it to get to Carr anyway. Seven man fronts routinely beat your line, nothing but a quality lineman will stop that. A third or fourth round lineman is good for depth and the occasional hidden gem, but they rarely provide the type of instant production that the Texans desperately need. IMO the smart move is trading down, drafting the best lineman available and try and find a plug in at reciever later. You guys aren't a big play reciever away from being competitive, you're several positions away from it.(and please Texans fans, this isn't a diss) If you don't protect Carr next year you can add QB to that list, because he's gonna get hurt.
Now the Pats are trying to move up to # 2. It'd be interesting if this does happen and they select someone other than Rogers. Maybe Rogers will be a Texan after all. But most likely their target is Charlie Rogers. I am surprised that the Texans are biting on trading down. They could have 13 and 22 from the Jets or If the pats deal is true they might have 14 and 19. I think Casserly is really high on someone why else would a team that has so many holes pass on these high extra picks? http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/story?id=1544824
Yeah, it looks like Detroit is almost certain to make that trade with New England now. That means Rogers will slip because New England really wants Robertson I think. Expect to hear about the trade tomorrow as the draft begins or during the 2nd pick obviously. I think the Texans should just draft Rogers at the #3 spot, trading down is pointless with all the picks we have with the expansion compensatory picks.Plus it is not a deep draft!
I'm a big supporter of Charles Rogers, and I'd looooove to have him. I think he's gonna be a Randy Moss clone (i.e. a big star), and I've read he has great hands. He's the playmaker this team deperately needs. However, I hear his agent wants a 7 year, $60 million deal. Riiiiiiight. Uh, no thanks, Mr. Poston. As much as it pains me to say so, I might just switch to the pro-Andre camp now after hearing that tidbit of information. That's an obscene amount of money.
I'm completely in the Pro Andre Johnson camp. I think if Rogers is there at three, you have to take him over Johnson, but I would be just as happy with Andre Johnson as I would Charles Rogers. I think both will have great careers. IMO Rogers has better hands and is a better RECEIVER, but Johnson is a bit more of a game-breaker than Rogers. Seriously, I'm happy with anything the Texans do: Rogers, Johnson, Newman or Gross. In the 2nd round, if McGahee is there I'd take him, but if not, I would LOVE to get Mike Doss from Ohio State at SS.
I love OSU and I hope you guys get Doss. He is a great leader and would be a nice guy to help build yor team around. He's a good guy and good player would love for you guys to get him!
Uggh, I hope not. I am not a doss fan at all. His pass coverage skills are really poor. If he had to go up against andre johnson in practice it would probably bring back bad memories of getting exposed in the Fiesta Bowl. I actualy watched him in several games last year and was just not impressed at all, he is without a doubt one of the worst deep zone defenders I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong, he'll be a decent, play up on the line, run topping big hitter strong safety. But that is not what a 3-4 defense requires, we already have 4 LB's out there. The 3-4 requries a guy who can cover; that is why the steelers had such problems defensively last year
Exposed in the Fiesta Bowl? You been playing NCAA football on playstation again? I'm curious when he was covering johnson in that game? I was drunk in Tempe but Doss wasn't the one usually covering him. Granted he is not a Deion Sanders, but if you watched OSU, he was not asked to cover, he was more often then not brought up to play the run. Maybe it's not his greatest strength (coverage) but if he is asked to play that role he will be fine. And I guarantee I watched him in a "few" games last year.
Well, they passed, and only god knows why if they settled on Kevin Williams. He's a great player, but why him over Suggs or Trufant?? Only thing I can figure, like the ESPN announcers, is that they were trying to deal, or they were trying to reduce the player's value by picking him later. If so, that's shady.
HOLY sh-t, that was the wildest sequence of draft picks I've ever seen, like 5 picks in five minutes! man that was fun! They should kill this 15 minutes bullsh-t; the teams have had 4 FReAKING MONTHS since college football ended to study the players, they don't need fifteen more freaking minutes. Give em FIVE, then I don't have to waste a whole day watching this thing. Plus, it's more fun, like those last few minutes proved.
Totally agree, that was great to see taht many picks that fast. Must suck to be a Viking fan right now. I wonder if they were trying to do a trade and got stuck?
