Curry Burns a safety from Louisville in the top of the seventh round Notes: Lettered as a true freshman in 1999. Started every game in 2000 and was a second-team All-Conference USA selection in '01, when he led his team in tackles and was the defensive MVP in the Liberty Bowl after a 12-tackle, one-interception performance. Had 14 tackles in 1999; 104 tackles, five passes broken up and two interceptions in 2000; and 107-4-4 in '01. Started seven of 12 games in '02 and had 111-7-2, three blocked kicks and two forced fumbles. Positives: Big, strong, physical safety who hits hard, tackles well and is effective in short coverage. Has pretty good instincts, vision and awareness. Can plant and drive up on the ball. Has much better feel for the game than tests indicate. Is a sure tackler because he takes the best angle. Plays the ball and can make the tough catch. Also plays well against the run. Negatives: Will struggle with his backpedal, his turn in coverage and on passes thrown over his head. Loses a lot when he turns to run deep with a receiver or to cover a lateral break. Plays too erect and struggles to maintain speed in transition. Summary: Could contribute as a special-teamer and extra defensive back in the nickel and dime, but he lacks the speed and suddenness to play every down.
What the Hell. We got him just as a deep snapper? This is stupid. Ok, unless we are in the NFC CHampionship game, rename ourselves the NY Giants, and play against SF, this pick is useless. If all those things happen and Chance Pearce gives a perfect snap, this will be a great pick. Way to think ahead Casserly.
Well the Texans now have very talented QB's 1-3. What does that accomplish? Nothing when Hensen will never take a snap and if all goes as planned Ragone should never take a snap. IMO they messed up just about every pick other than AJ. Luckily they had a high pick where its almost impossible to mess things up. Im not to high on this draft but I guess only time to tell.
The first 2 picks will help our Defense, by giving them more rest. We got the best WR in the draft, a good blocking TE, and added some role players and help for special teams. We gained more picks for next year, including a first rounder. The 2 QB's could be worth alot for next years draft also. I think that was the key for us this year.
The more I think about it, the more the Drew Henson pick makes sense. I mean, sure the guy said he wouldn't play football, but if he ends up sucking at baseball then we have the rights to him and could likely get a good draft pick in return for those rights. Otherwise, the odds that a 6th round pick was going to help us much is slim anyway. It was a calculated gamble and I don't fault them for trying it.
Ragone was taken too high for a backup QB. They said we will have to work on his release. Also, Ragone probably isn't comfortable taking snaps from center (something like 80% of the snaps at UL were from the shotgun). We could have gotten a St. Pierre or Dorsey in the later rounds. I can't believe Kingsbury got drafted before Dorsey.
Uhh...we only have his rights for one year. It would be a coup if he left baseball this year, but it's highly unlikely ($$$$). I don't like the pick cause even if the player we selected turns out to be a bust, at least that player would have attempted to fill a need. Henson fills no need and is currently untradeable.
True, but I wouldn't bet on Henson playing football at any point in the next year. he has something like 12 mil left on his contract. For him to sign within the year that the Texans hold his rights, some team would have to pony up around that much to make it worht his while.
Well, if he never turns out to be worth a damn with the Yankees, they may release him. Then he will be free to play football, if he wants
If the player busts, what need does he fill? Taking up space? We can sign any of the scrubby FAs to fill that need. It's not a problem finding guys to take up space. The 6th round is the time to take a gamble like the Texans did with Henson. If it works out, it will have been a master move. If it doesn't, then all we missed out on was a guy to take up space or the looooong shot at getting a player that will contribute that late.
I think it's a guaranteed contract; not sure of the terms but I thik if he plays football he forfeits the money.
If they cut him, they pay him the money regardless. It's a longshot, I know, but so are most 6th round picks.
i'm not surprised by the pick of Ragone....b/c if i remember right they loved him last yr and were hoping he would come out.....before they decided Carr was there man.....but Henson.....idunno about that one......right now we have 3 QB's going to camp then u add Ragone....so 4(Carr, Banks, Quinn?, Ragone).....i'm kinda clueless on this pick, but i'm getting it was a gamble they wanted to try.....I would have liked if they picked up another DE....Deloach is not that great a presence on the line.....but i liked what they did w/ the draft and they stocked piled 3 more picks for next yr.....so i'm satisfied, i would give them a B-, b/c i think they drafted more towards best player then needs.....my 2 cents
