I also hope we take suggs in the 4th. I really cant believe that he has fallen this far.

As for Ragone, I dont understand spending a 3rd rounder on him when we have so much invested in Carr's future. I have a bad feeling we are just developing a future starter for another team.

    Dave Ragone?

I was just watching ESPN, and then I saw it say Dave Ragone. If I was to take a backup qb, id dfraft one next year or something.
    Maybe he is trade bait.

Ouch... Raggone looks slow and doesn't particularly throw a good ball either. No wonder he dropped in the draft.

I would have liked seeing a S or RB selected... heck, we have the worst pair of safeties in the NFL. And with all the hype around Justin Fargas (and we sure could use a speedy back).

    *sigh*

I think it's a great pick. With this line Carr was lucky to have lasted the whole season. Do you really want Tony Banks or Mike Quinn coming in?

I'm guessing Quinn will get the short end of the stick since he's getting enough years in the NFL to earn him more than they would have to pay Ragone, a 3rd round pick.

And if we are developing a "future started" that means he would be good trade bait...nothing wrong with that.

Great point about the abuse that Carr took lask year. However, In the short run i am more comfortable with a guy like Banks comming in. I could be very wrong about this but it usually takes a year or two for a QB to be of any use to his team.

While I love the Johnson pick, I was just hoping that we would better address our needs at RB and OL. Suggs could fix this:)

    Not to offend but:

Most of the people dissing Ragone seem to be making comments that would indicate that they haven't ever seen him play. Granted, I've only seen one game, but it was enough to convince me that he's worth it.

That was this last year when, in a driving rainstorm, Louisville beat Florida State 26 - 20 in OT, and Ragone basically willed his team to victory. He may play ugly, but he's incredibly tough and a great leader. I thought the pick seemed odd as well, but given a bit of thought I've warmed up to it. He's a perfect #2 IMHO.

I think people may be a bit overconfident based on the fact that Carr played every down this past year.

Here's Dom Capers take on why they picked Ragone:

"Quarterback it to me the most valuable
position on your football team. Quarterbacks are like pitchers in
baseball, you can't have too many good quarterbacks on your roster.

That was the reason you take a Dave Ragone, who after his junior year people had rated in the first round. We had the privilege of coaching him at the senior bowl, which helped us get to know him.

That's a valued pick. You never pass quarterbacks if you like them and they are there even if you have good quarterbacks like we do. We like his arm strength."

Free Agent, Thanks for convincing me, now I dont mind the choice. I never had a problem with Ragone's abilities I just find him to be a luxury at this point. Between him and Carr we are set a QB for quite a while.

Who knows he may even be better than Carr.

Let's see...we draft a QB who will never see the field at Reliant Stadium over a guy like Suggs, C. Brown, or Onterrio that could have come in and helped us right away.

I think that Seth Wand may have taken over the drafting duties for Charlie Casserly. This draft has been a disappointment. The Texans had a chance to hit some home runs in this draft, but Cass just didn't have the balls today. What a p*ssy.

I'm very unhappy with Benny Joppru in the 2nd round as well, considering that Billy Miller is our guy at that position. Mike Doss at safety would've been a perfect leader for our secondary. Aaron Glenn isn't going to be around forever.

I don't appreciate the Texans' staff taking a bunch of no name guys who haven't played against any real competition in college. F*cking Seth Wand went to NW Mizzou St! What the hell is that crap. And don't give that Jerry Rice MVSU BS either. The Texans struck out big time today. My draft would have looked like this:

    1. Andre Johnson WR
    2. Chris Kelsay DE (Neb.)
    3. Wayne Hunter OT (Hawaii)
    3. Ricky Manning CB (UCLA)
    3. Lee Suggs RB (VT)

I just think its stupid to take a guy who you KNOW will not start a game for you next year. Best case scenario is that he is a reliable back up for the Texans in 2004. If he ever becomes a fultime starter with the organization it will be because Carr, and Casserly therefore, fails

This is the same BS reason they gave for drafting Joppru -

They got to "coach" them at the Senior Bowl.

    That thinking is stupid.

He's a third round pick for goodness sake. How many draft picks, beyond the 1st and even 2nd round actually walk right in and start?

Add Wand to that list, I believe the qoute was he worked hard at the senior bowl or something along those lnes. I had Hunter as a guy we shouldv'e pick in round two, I'm hoping the Texans didn't blow this one as bad as I think they did.

Well if that thinking is stupid, then why not take Lefwich with the 3rd pick? Most people had him higher ranked than A.Johnson.

Answer, because we don't need a quarterback. And we didn't need one six hours later either.

Nobody said the Texans would get a starter at that slot. But if Dave Ragone is ever the Texans First Team starting QB, it means that the Texans totally blew their first draft.

Or that they blew the second one by not getting protection for Carr

Interesting first day, to say the least. Ragone was a wasted pick, regardless of "value," IMO. However, tomorrow is a new day. Lee Suggs, Onterrio Smith, Chris Brown, Tony Pashos, Terrence Holt, Bradie James, Jarret Johnson, Dan Klecko, Tully Banta-Cain, Nick Eason, Kevin Garrett, Dennis Weathersby, Steve Sciullo, Seneca Wallace, Shane Walton, Matt Wilhelm, Rien Long, and Shurron Pierson are all still on the board. Here's hoping we find some real gems tomorrow in the later rounds...

This is Pro-Football Weekly's Assessment of the 2002 Draft.

So basically even with all the extra picks, we had no real upside surprises and perhaps ruined our opportunity again this year.

Since these are the only 2 years we get this chance, mediocrity here we come.

In fairness last years draft seemed before (and seems now)pretty weak, as does this years. Just bad luck I guess.
