No doubt those teams improved those positions but I don't see those picks dramatically improving either team.

The Titans D-line was weak without Haynesworth and drafting a pass rusher maybe only replaces Vanden Bosch.

The Colts already have two pro bowl pass rushers, what's one more? I don't think they got good value out of upgrading a strength rather than a true area of weakness.

Yep for the Colts, I was really worried they would address a real weakness in their team in HB and take a guy we could possibly take in the 2nd like Gerhart or Tate. They have the talent to reach for any number of players.

Also LT is a bit of concern for them too, so a bit surprised there.

Well that is why you need to develop a running game. That is how you neutralize aggressive pass rushers

If the BPA for the Texans on the board at 20 is Jackson, I personally would've preferred they traded down. But overall, I'm fine with the pick. I just hope he doesn't proceed to suck the way Denver CB picks used to always do for Shannahan.

Texans draft Macon native Jackson

Kareem Jackson watched and cheered for the Atlanta Falcons when he was younger.

Once he grew up and became a starter in the SEC, his favorite team changed and fit his personality a little bit more.

“The Baltimore Ravens,” Jackson said. “That defense they have and Ray Lewis in the middle and Ed Reed playing center field.”

Having spent three seasons on an elite SEC defense, the former Westside and Alabama standout is prepared for a physical and aggressive defense in the NFL and certainly would like to have gotten a call Thursday night from Baltimore in the first round of the NFL draft.

But now, he’s a cornerback for the Houston Texans after being drafted with the 20th pick Thursday night in the first round of the NFL draft.

At 9:32 p.m., Kareem Jackson calmly spoke on the phone as about two dozen friends and family packed the TV room of his home.

Four minutes later, after unsuccessfully waving for quiet, Jackson slipped outside.

At 9:37 p.m., everybody Jackson knows became a Houston Texans fan.

They erupted throughout the Jacksons’ Cherokee Heights house as Houston picked the former Westside and Alabama standout with the 20th pick Thursday night of the NFL draft.

While his fans went crazy at the announcement, Jackson was outside talking to a Houston official.

Jackson was projected to anywhere from 17th in the first round to early in the second round. As the draft progressed, anticipation in several rooms of the house grew.

And when they heard from the television, “Houston Texans select ... Kareem Jackson,” it was the Fourth of July on Cherokee Avenue.

It was very much a celebratory atmosphere at the Jacksons’ Cherokee Heights home with about 60 friends and family filling a living room, TV room, well-stocked dining room and spilling out to the driveway and backyard.

“They beat me here,” Jackson said. “I was out running some errands, doing some shopping. People were here when I got back.”

Jackson was in the middle of a packed TV room watching the picks come and go.

There wasn’t much anxiety, since all indications were that Jackson was likely to get a call in the second half of the first round.

But as it progressed, a friend put his hand on Jackson’s shoulder.

“It’s time,” he said. “It’s time to go watch TV.”

The NFL draft went to prime time and cut down on the time between picks in the first round to 10 minutes. So it was an equally energetic and relaxed draft-watching party.

Jackson said earlier in the week that he played only a handful of snaps on defense as a senior at Westside.

“I had maybe five or six snaps my senior year,” he said. “I had three picks.”

But he was reminded by way of former assistant coach Christopher Jones that he some solid experience in the secondary as a sophomore and in situations as a junior and senior.

“Yeah, I forgot about that,” Jackson said. “I did play some more.”

His career at Alabama didn’t indicate any lack of experience, and he started 40 of the 41 games he played in.

Jackson said a few days ago that his father Hezekiah was excited, but trying not to show it.

Hezekiah was busy throughout the evening playing traffic cop in the house, making sure everybody had a full plate.

“I’ve been knowing for years what my child could do, athletic-wise, physically, mentally,” he said. “Kareem’s an outstanding boy. He’s everything I expected, from the crib up to right now. This is his dream.”

Jackson has the pedigree. Smith has the track record. I'm confident in the choice.

Now... I'm completely stumped as to who we take in the 2nd round.

I missed the pick when it happened because I was working, but it sounds to me like while not the likely choice, it was far from a reach. If we were targeting a corner, we had 3 to pick from and all were projected late first rounders (and were). If we chose the one that fits our style better is and is more ready to play, then I don't have a problem with it.

We do not need a running back in the second round. This draft is deep at the running back position, and we can find many that fit our blocking scheme, in the fourth or fifth round. James Starks, from the University of Buffalo is a perfect fourth or fifth round candidate that would pair well with a Slaton or Moats, and fits our scheme well.

From what I've seen and Smith's track record, I'm good with this pick. It was an unexpected one to say the least, but the guy could turn out to be pretty good. Can't wait until tomorrow to see how the next two rounds play out.

I'm soooo looking forward to next season. I may pulla Cartman and freeze myself until the start of it. What could go wrong?

When Jackson indicated that his selection was near, his mother and father had to wade through the packed TV room — most everybody had a camera phone aimed at “Coco” — to get next to him on the couch.

It was so loud that Jackson had to go outside to hear the Houston official, but he was acutely aware of when his name was announced by the celebration that had started in his house.

“It is very amazing,” he said of the full house. “I wanted to stay in there and kinda see the TV (announcement).”

Jackson finished talking with the Texans official, then was on a conference call with Houston media.

As calm after getting the news as he was all night, Jackson broke into a smile.

“I can sleep now,” he said. “But there’ll be a little celebrating (Thursday night).”

His day starts early. The Jacksons will leave Macon for Atlanta around 8 a.m. today and will fly to Houston where Jackson will be introduced to the Houston media this afternoon. Then the negotiation process begins.

Jackson has been relaxed about the whole process, although he clearly was happy to get the call, which was a little earlier than most had him projected. Houston wasn’t on the radar.

“I didn’t talk to the Texans, so it kind of shocked me,” Jackson said. “We didn’t hear anything from the Texans. They called me, and it’s a done deal now. I’m just ready to go in and get to work.

Jackson’s mother Rossalyn and father Hezekiah were busy hosting during the evening and were relieved.

“I had been kinda calm all day,” Rossalyn Jackson said. “People kept asking me been asking me all day, ‘Are you nervous?’ ‘No, what am I supposed to be nervous about?’ But when they called his name, that’s when my nerves kinda hit.”

The party moved outside, where it was definitely cooler, but friends of Jackson’s parents soon started cleaning up. There was quite the spread, ranging from jerk chicken to noodles to fish to shrimp. And attendees ranged from too young to walk to the grandparent age.

“My first thought was how blessed we really are,” Hezekiah Jackson said. “Then I thought about the power of prayer. I mean, we have prayed and prayed and prayed, for safe passage, for safe keeping. And when I heard (the announcement), all the praying and all, gives you relief that you’ve done the best that you can do, especially with a 22 year old in this day and time.

“It’s amazing that so many people came from the neighborhood, so many guys that he went to school with, so many of my church members. It truly is a blessing.”

Kareem will be very good for us. (please! ). I'm just thinking positively here. Watching a crappy secondary for the 2nd year in a row would put me in risky heart attack territory.
