What's interesting is that Jeff Driskel was the top rated QB coming out of HS in 2011 as well. Texans have two elite HS QB prospects on the team.

Yeah, but when you look at most top high school recruits, they're basically nowhere to be found years later, so... yeah.

Not being coached by Jeff Fisher would have been good for him too.

Todd Marinovich is still the gold standard for all hype, no career to me.

Most embarrassing performance: The record-setting Houston Texans

I don’t want to take the low-hanging fruit and pile on the Texans. We know they are one of the NFL’s worst teams and in a terrible situation. But their 40-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills was the worst in franchise history.

How bad was it? TruMedia’s numbers go back to 2000. Based on EPA per play, the Texans’ offensive performance in Week 4 was THE WORST of the last 22 seasons. There have been a lot of bad quarterbacks and bad coaches and bad weather conditions during that span. I mean, we’re talking about 80 games coached by Adam Gase (sorry, that was probably unnecessary). And yet no offensive performance was worse than what we saw from the Texans in Buffalo. The Houston Texans are having an identity crisis: They are a run-first team that cannot run the ball. After the Texans gained 48 yards on 18 carries in a blowout loss to the Bills, coach David Culley said an emphasis on the ground game remains “who we are.”

“As long as we stay ahead of the chains, we’ll be able to be the football team we need to be,” Culley said.

The Texans similarly struggled on the ground last year, but they had Deshaun Watson’s arm to save them. Now that they have Tyrod Taylor and rookie Davis Mills at quarterback, offensive coordinator Tim Kelly is calling one of the NFL’s most run-heavy offenses, results be damned. And the results are poor.

Houston ranks 31st in yards before contact per rush (0.65) and 18th in yards after contact per rush (2.54). The blocking has been terrible, and the running backs have been not as bad but still below average.

According to TruMedia’s Expected Points Added formula, which considers down and distance, the Texans produced a successful rushing play 32.3 percent of the time last season. Through the first four games of this season, that rate sits at 27 percent.

Ingram has run into loaded boxes on an astounding 73.1 percent of his carries. According to TruMedia, that leads 18 backs with at least 50 carries as of Monday afternoon, and it’s 20 percent higher than the next-closest player, Tennessee’s Derrick Henry.

The Texans made some changes in their secondary against the Bills. Safety Eric Murray, one of the worst signings in Bill O’Brien’s tenure as general manager, didn’t play a snap on defense. He was replaced by Lonnie Johnson, who picked off Josh Allen’s first pass of the game. Murray has the fourth-highest hit on the team ($7.5 million), and he is currently under contract for another season after this one, but he’ll likely be a cap casualty this offseason.

Desmond King replaced Vernon Hargreaves as one of the Texans’ starting outside corners and played all but one snap on defense. Tavierre Thomas became Houston’s top option in the slot, where King has spent most of his career. Hargreaves played just 19 percent of Houston’s defensive snaps, his smallest share since joining the Texans in 2019.

The samples are small, but Roberts’ 3.17 yards per punt return ranks last among 19 qualified players. His 20.5 yards per kick return places him 14th out of 21 qualified players. And his muffed punt in Week 2 led to an easy Browns touchdown. It’s been a rough start for the 33-year-old Roberts, who signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Texans this offseason and made the team despite hardly practicing during training camp.
