[geek alert!] The comic adaptation of the film was in my stack of comics from last week. After I saw the movie (not perfect, but very good IMHO), I went and checked it out. Spiderman has many more wisecracks in that version. Perhaps Raimi cut them to keep things from getting too cheesy? Just a thought. [/geek alert!]
I'm not a Spiderman fan-- haven't read a single comic-- but this is the best movie I've seen since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Simply awesome. I loved it-- I'll probably go see it again tomorrow, and the only movie I've ever seen more than once in the theatre is Star Wars: Episode I.
I just saw the movie tonight, and I thought it was great. *Spoilers Below* The scene where MJ & Peter are talking outside the diner--- As MJ is leaving she says "See you later Tiger". So, she's now developed the pet name for Peter. At the end of the movie when Harry is talking to Peter and just spewing the hate when talking about Spider-Man set off an alarm for me. I think next movie they will have Harry come across the Goblin gear and maybe even the strength potion. A question on the Balcony scene, the man in the wheelchair-- Is he supposed to be the Kingpin? I figure the test pilot who gets "blown to bits" will become the Octopus. Overall, you have MJ at then end of the movie figuring out who Peter really is, but Aunt May doesn't know and I think they setup a great series of movies, like the X-Men. Oh, and another thing I liked was how the movie had its dark moments. The directors could have easily gone Joel Schumacker on the movie and cheesed it up, like the scene where the gang attacks MJ (BTW, nice wet dress shot of Kirsten Dunst), and for example have the gang dressed in some sort of costumes and whatnot. Instead it was kept more normal and I liked how everything was blended in. I thought William Dafoe did a great job (especially the mirror scene) and his voice perfectly matched what I thought the Hobgoblin should sound like. Too bad he had to die, maybe they could use his voice as the voice in Harry's head. Finally, on a different note, at the end when Peter is walking away in the cemetary and his thoughts are voiced; he said "I am Spider- Man". The first thing that popped in my head was Michael Keaton and his "I'm Batman" line. *Spoilers End* I give the movie 4 stars, popcorn buckets, or whatever method you use. Any way you slice it I think its a must see. Rob
while this seems doubtful, i guess it could happen. at first i was pissed cuz spiderman doesn't seem like it deserves to have the biggest weekend ever (note: i've never read the comic, don't have anything against, just don't have anything for it) but then i realized if it kept up the pace it would beat harry potter's opening weekend. and well, when anything beats harry potter, it's all gravy after that. now here's hoping episode II, which looks fairly kickass from the previews, beats the 41 million. i'm not a star wars freak or anything but i do like it quite a bit.
I don't think he's Kingpin since that character's supposed to be in the Daredevil movie... I thought he was supposed to be either Spencer or Alistair Smythe(creators of the Spider-slayers), but I didn't catch what name Harry called him by.
Spiderman was awesome. I expected it to be awesome and it was even better than I expected it to be. I'm definetly going to see it again.
I thought that it was incredibly cheesy. The acting was terrible except for Dafoe. The Power Rangers outfit sucked. The CGI sucked. If I wanted to watch a cartoon I would have gone to see Ice Age or some crap like that. I never read comic books so I didnt care if they stuck to the story or not. I think that it had promise especially the first half but it got worse the longer I watched. Anyway, I didnt care for it myself.
Dude, you are wrong by a long shot. It was good entertaining fair for myself and my kids. Sometimes people forget that they should suspend reality when they go to the movies and just have fun.
Very well done. My fears that it wouldn't live up to expectations were unfounded. Probably the first flick in a long, long time where I actually heard the audience clap at the end. That was surprising. The movie is breaking all kinds of records and will probably break many more. (At least until Star Wars hits). I definitely recommend it; go see it, you won't be disappointed.
WOW. With all the hype I thought this movie would suck big time. I was wrong. Awesome movie. Good for all ages. Stars : ***** (5/5) Kirsten Dunst - 10 She was HOT! I think they setup this movie to be a big series like Superman or Rocky.
i thought that was one of the film's best, and dare i say, most powerful moments: peter turns MJ down because he realizes loving her would put her life in jeopardy. remember his thought process upon walking away: with power comes great responsibility? sets up what should be an interesting plot point in part 2.
I came away iffy---but wanting to see it again. Like most comic book films it suffers from setup-itis. They've got to introduce all the characters, the backplot, etc...and THEN get to the action. I still havn't seen as well done as it was in Batman. Action directors should stick the action. I LOVED the superhero, and I LOVED the villain. I just had problems with the Goblins son, to a lesser extent MJ (whose acting was good, but was wrong for the part---) and Jonah was just a bit too over the top. Ultimately, I'm toying with the idea of editting this movie (like the way the guy did to make Episode 1.1) to tighten it up so I can watch it the way *I* want to see it.
I wasn't expecting to ever go see it but my wife (inexplicably) wanted to. So I saw it last night. I was entertained, I suppose, but the movie was bad. It was corny, but I won't criticize it for that, seeing as the comic book is also corny. The acting was fairly bad. Why do people think Kirsten Dunst is attractive? I appreciated the short skirts and all, but there is something very weird and unpleasant about her face. The writing was fairly poor. Oftentimes, it was too painfully obvious what work was being done because the conversation was utterly unnatural (hmmm, are you trying to let the audience know the man's been layed off?). Toss-up between bad writing and bad acting, but I'll put the lion's share to the writing. Bad special effects. Not terrible, but how much did they spend on this movie? The Willem Defoe monologues just looked ridiculous. The costumes annoyed me because they eliminated a lot of potential for acting by completely disguising facial expressions. Obviously, this is something on which their hands were tied, but it detracted from the enjoyability of the movie. All in all, I enjoyed myself, but I'll be scandalized when I see Spiderman in the Oscars.
I was thinking that, as well, during this movie. Don't know what it was since I've found her very attractive in other movies (like that cheerleader one).
you enjoyed yourself? let's quickly recap: you thought the acting was "bad," the writing "poor" and the EFX "bad." hmmmm.... well, maybe you, like every other heterosexual male, at least came away convinced kirsten dunst's nipples should be nominated for something... nope, you found her "weird and unpleasant." riiiight.... uhmmm.... costumes? nope, they "annoyed" you. the duality of the osborne/goblin charcater? nope, you termed that "ridiculous." i'm stumped. was the popcorn especially good? maybe the trailers were unexpectedly great? what? how could you enjoy yourself watching a movie that essentially failed on every level (in your opinion)? just curious....
I will finally see it later today,...I also can't believe my wife wants to see it...Usually, we are opposite interests regarding movies...
It's just because I can still be entertained, even with a bad product. I'll be sure to tell everyone it's more fun than doing your laundry, but a cinematic masterpiece it's not. Sure, I know judging it as a high art is unfair to it since it was never intended as such, but even looking at it in terms of craftsmanship, it was not good. But, I listen to poorly crafted music, watch poorly crafted television, visit poorly crafted websites (this is not one, however) and make poorly crafted arguments and still enjoy myself in the undertakings. I never said the movie wasn't enjoyable; just that it was bad. It could just be that I don't appreciate the rich heritage that Spiderman carries and therefore couldn't properly appreciate the movie. Other people seem to have this problem with Lord of the Rings or Star Wars (the first 3). Incidentally, the first 3 Star Wars were all bad just like Spiderman was, but I absolutely loved them because they managed to evoke a certain mood, a romanticism, that is very pleasing and very hard to accomplish in cinema. My wife can't see it; I think because she saw the movies much later in life. I suspect maybe the same thing is happening with Spiderman, except this time with me on the other side. PS. I only said Dunst's face was 'weird and unpleasant.' The rest of her, including the nipples, I enjoyed.
