I am tempted to say that he needs to go through what Dwight and Melo went through. Go through a season or two with literally nobody wants him, then come back to be a bench player. But then I realize that Melo has the skill to shoot, and Dwight has a big body to bang. Russ has neither of those things. When he loses his speed and athleticism, he is totally useless.
