Since Scola can play Center a little bit, I'd let Butler go before Harris. I can't believe Harris is the first cut. He seemed more energetic and capable than the other chopping block candidates. What is Morey up to? Will Harris make it back to our roster after a blockbuster trade?
Agreed....I just can't see Lucas, Novak, or Snyder here over Harris. If we are able to make a move and cut some sallary, I could easily see him back in Red.
Scola might see foul trouble early on. Then there could be nights when both Hayes & Scola head into foul trouble. Landry is the only one without the guaranteed contract but he's guranteed a spot. I think Harris is gone because Reed and/or Butler couldn't be salary dumped. My hunch is these are the players to be cut with an eye on LT Sura + Harris + JLIII + Novak + Reed/Butler They keep either Reed or Butler and hope to salary dump that player to get under LT.
Harris had a non guaranteed contract if that doesnt scream training camp fodder i dont know what else does. 3 left to cut? i my guess would be sura, reed and jl3
-Butler Unless we trade for another big we will be keeping this warm body. -Reed is expensive to cut. -Snyder is expensive to cut and still may come around and provide some value. -Novak is not ever going to be more than a spot player in the NBA and we don't have any spots atm -JL3 gone -Landry I think stays around because we did so much to get him that management doesn't want to look stupid
I disagree. We have a LOT of very talented guys who are good in areas that are Harris' strengths, cutting to the basket and getting rebounds. The one thing that Novak does well, shooting from distance, is a talent that we do not have enough of outside of Head. Novak may not be ready this year, but if he can pick up RA's system, he can be one of the guys that spreads the floor and makes teams pay for doubling.
The reason that Harris is the first cut is because he CANNOT be traded. Training camp players like Harris, with non-guaranteed deals, cannot be traded until December. On the other hand, the other guys (other than Landry) can be packaged in trades or just traded straight up.
Actually it's very logical and expected as I posted earlier. I like the kid but he came here at the wrong time.
That's what I think too. Too bad, Harris was looking like the winner. They both were locked into 2 year min contracts if they performed. It would have been great if they were more "humbled" and threw the dice on Harris over Landry.
funny. it seems everyone agrees he shouldn't be the first cut. does it mean he should be cut sometime later? so what's the different between 1st cut and 2nd cut? i totally disagree with rox management. he shouldn't be cut at all. so far based on what i saw in those preseason games, we had enough cuts to trim our roster down to 15.
I don't like it at all. If financial considerations is going to be the criteria, they might end up keeping Reed because he has a 2 year contract.
I couldn't believe this news either. Harris had as good a training camp and preseason as he could have, showing that he brings energy, rebounding, bball IQ, good jumpshot, etc. That makes the rest of the cuts easy, though... Sura Reed Lucas Butler BTW, has anyone else been as uninspired by Butler's play as I have? He doesn't show any intensity or hustle or effort. I really doubt that its the knee or whatever injury he has thats bothering him...If I'm Jackie Butler right now, I know that Yao, Mutombo, and Scola are ahead of me in the depth charts, leaving almost no minutes left for me. Therefore I'm gonna force my way out of this team by playing poorly...As a young player who has already been stuck on the bench in San Antonio, Butler can care less about winning right now. All he wants now are minutes on another team and show people out there that he does have a place in this league. Forget about keeping Butler for insurance at the center spot...I'm pretty sure we really does not want to be a Rocket right now.
Ugh. I, too, am very disappointed about this. Harris was great. Definitely better than Novak or Butler.
This move really looks like a CYA move for Landry, Morey probably did not want to explain to Les why he had to pay all that money for a 2nd round pick that was not going to make the roster. Harris is better than Landry, but he got caught in a numbers game. Hopefully he will get on somewhere else with a better situation, he is NBA ready. DD
