I dunno much about him, but i read thaat his perimte defense is really good. He's supposedly really good at stayting in front of the perimter players and keeping penetration to a minimun.
They picked the small guard due to the fact Adleman needs someone like Bibby to run his "Kings" offense. Back in the days he had Bibby and Bobby Jackson. With so many small PG like Alston and James, one could be traded next year. I suggest they get another PF for backup. A good rebounder and shot blocker.
two sandwiches is back too!! awesome man, i figured you had died of a heart attack or something. Dude don't you think your being a little dramatic here? Granted everyone is entitled to their opinions, but choke city is a little much.
Just wanted to say I was on record of being interested him or Sean Singletary (who I think withdrew) in the draft. Granted this was before the James trade. But Brooks is a player. He was the toughest player to stop in the Pac 10. Outstanding shooter, great athleticism, and natural scorer. Can shoot from all spots (high %) and finishes as well because he is so quick (think Tony Parker/TJ Ford quick). He played 2 guard his last year in college because that is how his team, which was surprisingly good, could best use him (they had an even smaller PG and they needed both on the floor), but he has handles and instincts to be a 1. Overall I think he will be a bit player to some degree because he is too small to guard lots of ones, but he could be a great infusion of offense off the bench for a lot of years. I also was pretty shocked with pick with McR and Davis on the board. But given Landry was also an the board, who we must of thought higher of, it would make sense we thought the odds of a decent PF prospect pick-up later were high (for one of these 3), but that Brooks was going to be gone, and we picked accordingly. So might have done real well in this draft--and I think many around here know I am usually not happy about our drafts. Just have to see, leave a B grade for now. Got to get to work in FA/trade for a PF and get rid of our clog of sub 6'4 guards, but in truth we got the PF draft prospect we liked that was within reason for our pick and Brooks could be solid player for a long time--all you can ask for a mid 20s.
Guys, I was really puzzeled last night but now I am very happy. I just saw the Brooks/Landry press conference, and it appears that Brooks is our very own "Agent Zero!" He apparently is going to wear the #0. That may be a great sign! I like it.
What's there not to like about Brooks except for his size? He's got everything else. How much bigger is Steve Nash than Brooks? Player can play or can't play. I'm sure there's lots of PGs bigger than Brooks in the NCAA, it's not like Brooks can't play as a result, isn't it? I'm fine with picking Brooks as I was fine with picking Kenny Thomas and Luther Head. It's the same picking philosophy with Thomas, Head and Brooks, they are players who had no business slipping to the mid twenties had they grew two inches taller. I'd be pretty happy if Brooks can make our nightmares Steve Nash, Tony Parker and Jason Terry work for their points a little, instead of being driven by left and right like before. Those teams poses the biggest threat in the run, not teams run by big guards like the Nets, the Warriors and the Jazz.
This pick makes no sense to me! A short and fast PG? sound like we've already get one, JLIII!!!! and see what JL3 has done! no efficiency in neither defense and offense end. So this is supposed to be the initial impression of the new manager leave on us?
i don't why why we all are so down on this pick, i think the rockets did the right thing by taking care of the point guard position first, AB is a TRUE point guard, he will give yao and tmac the ball, and with his quickness he can push the ball up...as our system will change from a half court game to a up-tempo game next year...rafer is great but he is not a TRUE point guard, and he makes crackhead plays, mike james will probably play the 2 and coming in for tmac when tmac gets a breather...and plus i don't think the ROCKETS are done with reloading the roster yet, i'm not going to be suprise if some of last year players are shipped out
I wouldn't mind his size so much if it weren't for the lack of court vision and the high turnover rate. He never averaged over 4.6 assists in a season and his assist to turnover ratio has never even been 2 to 1. Everyone rags on Rafer here, but he has a career Asst to TO ratio of almost 3 to 1. The callouts on Brooks are not just his height but that he locks on scoring and forgets to involve teammates. He goes right most of the time, gets out of control on drives and picks up cheap fouls reaching in too much. Meanwhile Landry is not considered a good defender and his conditioning is called into question. That doesn't sound like Chuck Hayes with better scoring to me. I hope I am wrong, but I am dissapointed thus far with their draft selections. I am not screaming or cursing, but I believe they could have done better.
Well @ first I was a little shock @this pick, but after awhile I warmed up to it! I also like the Landry Pick. It's funny that these two did very well against The Champs- Florida Gators in the tournament. And I heard that Landry held his own against Oden - the #1 Pick, in their 3 meetings! I will support these guys becuz they are Rockets players. GO ROCKETS!!!!
It's because the ROX already had 4-5 PGs (Alston, James, Spanoulis, Lucas, and pseudo point Head) on the roster and 1 PF who is a FA. There were 4 PFs on the board that were pretty much universally rated higher than Brooks and Landry. As for Rafer not being a true PG, he is actually more of a pure point than Brooks.
He's not a true point guard or he would have played that position last year. He played SG most of the time last year. Penetrate and dish, he can do. Pick and roll, probably. Make the entry pass without a TO, I doubt it.
This is what Morey values: http://robbieallen.com/blog/mit-sdm/2005/04/daryl-morey-svp-operations-and.html Compared to the other PG's in the first round Brooks has the best/lowest TO numbers.
I agree, anyone from the SEC, BIG Ten, Pac-10 that can run up numbers like Brooks has my respect. I will look forward to seeing what he can do with the ball. We do now have too many guards but in today's NBA, every team wants penetrators and shooters. It's a perimeter game now.
