I have no clue what you're talking about. Carlisle had 1 year remaining on his contract and probably wanted an extension. If the team didnt want to give it to him, what do you want them to do? Have a lame duck coach them? Have a lame duck coach their future superstar draft choice for 1 year and then leave? They saw an opportunity where one of the best coaches in the league was available and they pounced on it. I swear some people think these coaches should all have lifetime contracts. Also, according to some sources, Carlisle wasnt getting along with some of their players. Who knows but Im not going to blame Joe Dumars for doing what he believes is in the best interest of the team. What about Larry Brown? You have the Rockets who according to Clutch made Brown an offer but have interviewed 4 or 5 coaches. Les and CD then publicly announces that there was no leader. Once Carlisle was gone, a better opportunity came up. Too bad the Rockets didn't close the deal when they had they chance. Bad for us, good for Brown and Detroit.
1) When did CD and Les come out and say that there was no leader? I believe all they said was that they were still interviewing. 2) How can you critisize the Rockets for not closing the deal when its up to Brown to accept our offer? I would say, too bad Brown didn't close the deal.
I was just listening to Fox Sports radio here in Austin and the guy was going on a long rant about Detroit and Larry Brown. And the guy asked, even if you wanted to hire Brown, why would you want to now? Well, I'm a Rockets fan, Rudy's gone and mainly because I think we've got some really slow learners on this team. And I think butts need to be kicked, because all patience is apparently gone. I don't care that Brown is only loyal to a bench and I'm not worried about this franchise being destabilized. But since it's come out that both the Silas and Van Gundy interview didn't go well, I'm even more worried that Dunleavy "hit a home run". CD, Rudy and Dunleavy go way back. Dunleavy is a better on the Xs & Os than Rudy, but the Rockets family needs to be shaken up in the locker room. And I just don't see Dunleavy as the guy to do it. Problem is, as of Monday, who's still available that can do it? Carlisle? Maybe. But Les has got to move fast no matter what he does. We might not even be able to get Dunleavy if coaching vacancies start getting filled in the next 24 hours. Even if you hate Brown, Les is still losing playing a damn good hand.
Hire Rudy T. He has two championships and a great coaching mentality. The only downfall is his health. Hire Kenny Smith or Mario Elie as the figure head for a while, then get on with it. Long live Rudy T!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be pissed if we get Dunleavy. I don't understand how things could collapse so fast for the Rockets. Whatever happened to the every coach is lining up to coach the Rockets and that it was going to be Brown or Gundy at worst? Now its going to be neither. On top of that, there will be no Silas, Carlisle, and not even sure about Dunleavy. Okay if Brown wan't to coach Detroit, then thats his issue. But why then can't the Rockets get the next tier of coaches like Gundy, Carlisle, Silas? Someone please explain to me the anatomy of a disaster.
Every coach wants an extension going into the last year of their contract. That way they can avoid being lame ducks. Yeah, they'll never have that problem with Larry Brown. No coach is perfect, but Carlisle did an amazing job to get 50 wins out of that team. He does great work, and he gets axed for it. I personally hope nothing good comes of this for the Pistons, and that Carlisle has all kinds of success. I wouldn't mind seeing him as the Rockets coach.
Maybe management got a little full of themselves and thought they could wait for the coaches to come begging to get the job.
From the Chronicle Article when they interviewed Silas: Dawson has said that the order of the interviews does not necessarily indicate preferences and that there is no top choice for the position. But Dawson said that he and Alexander likely would get together this weekend to assess the process so far and determine whether to hold more interviews or begin the process of choosing and trying to sign one of the coaches that........
If getting a coach causes all this strife...then let's not have one demmit!!! Let's just have Francis and Cat run the show and run amock and ballhog and shoot crazy shots... To hell with plays!!!...Let them have fun and drink Sprite...Basketball is about the love of playing...Let them just love each other and the ball, and smile and bullcorn and cut up... We as fans just need to sit in the arena and shut our pie holes up and enjoy the action...and by gosh, we better have sellouts and buy this crap!!!!
That's such baloney. If there wasn't any preference, why not wait on the interviews and hold them, in say, July? I think CD was just trying to be "legally and professionally noncommital." Moreover, given the "restrictions" placed on Doc Rivers and Maurice Cheeks, the drop off from 1st to 2nd tier coaches really widens. Even with people like Doug Collins in the market for a job, I'd have to say that JVG and Dunleavy are the only real top tier coaches who remain on the market. The nice thing is that, among the teams still looking for a coach, I can't see any that are even remotely as attractive as Houston. IMO, it's time to move to round two of interviews with JVG and Dunleavy. I'd also be curious to see what RudyT's opinion is of each of these two guys. theSAGE
Exactly. And what if you don't want to give it to them. You keep him on for a lame duck season or do you start over and sign one of the best coaches available? Of course every coach has had their run-ins with players. And coaches have been fired for these reasons. The fact he's had these run-ins without getting fired should tell you something. He coaches on his own terms. It's this reputation that wouldve made our immature team stand up and take notice.
In all fairness to Les and CD, I think they've been handling this vacancy situation with aplomb. The ability to be patient and to wait people out is a virtue and not a vice. One thing I've always marvelled about RudyT and the Rocket organization is how patient they can be. Whether it's player development, team chemistry, coaching, etc., the organization as a whole has been consistently good at finding good seeds and giving them the time, water, and freedom to grow. With respect to filling this coaching vacancy, I think Les and CD's patience is paying off. Given what we now know to be "Brown's true colors," is it any big loss tha we didn't get Brown's blessing? Among the two candidates left in the running, isn't there some sweet satisfaction in knowing that both are hungry for this job and for no other? No matter what direction we take with either coach, ultimately, Les and CD's careful and patient approach toward picking a coach will yield dividends to us fans in the future. I don't think we need to worry about losing both candidates to competing teams and being left with 3rd tier coaches. As anyone who's been involved in negotiations knows, it pays to "hold out." By holding out, we can see exactly which parties are sincere in their desire to work with us. Alternatively, those parties who aren't interested in working with us, won't wait around for us to make a decision. Consequently, we have a natural "filtering" process for sincere coaching talent. The ANALysts who once proclaimed that Yao was a dud are the same ANALysts who proclaim Brown to be a super-genious. To my amazement, I've even read articles that say something to the effect that "Houston was foolish to let Brown slip away" and that "Brown signing with Detroit is Houston's loss." When did ANALysts become self-proclaimed soothsayers? Neither Brown nor any coach will be the end all be all. Fact is, nobody can predict the future. As a team, we'll still need to stay fit and healthy and removed from in-fighting. So that's my "vent" for this evening. grrrrrrSAGE
Is wonder if one of the 'top flight' coaches is going to be able to wrest control from Rudy and CD, or did they believe there would be too much control from above. I would like some comment on how Leslie will deal with this point.
I for one was always interested in getting rid fo Rudy IF we could get someone notably better. In my opinion, Larry and JVG are significant improvements. Dunleavy, Fratello and Silas are not.
Riet, I take that statement to mean that they are still interviewing and that Les and CD have not gotten together to make a final decision. Also, I don't think it would be wise for CD to come out and say "Well, after interviewiing, Dunleavy, Silas, Van Gundy and Brown, the leader is Brown". All that does is insult your other candidates. Furthermore, if Brown is grabbed by someone else, then you make the other candidates feel like 2nd fiddle. You stand more to lose than gain by announcing where the candidates rank. This is just never done.
I would agree, but did you see the Larry Brown quote made on Saturday? He said he was waiting to hear from the Rockets, not the other way around.
WTF is happening? I thought our job is the best coaching job available. How come Detroit beat us to it? What the hell does Destroit have? It must be our GM & Owner's fault if Larry Brown goes to Detroit. We have better players, organization, new arena, great fans support. Tons of upside. I will blame Alexander & CD if they screwed up this
This is pretty much alot of people's feelings too. Whether they deserve blame or not, they will be blamed.
To all of you complainers out there including myself: It could be worse, the Hornets have narrowed their choices to Tim Floyd or Brian Hill. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/news/2003/06/01/mccallum_hornets/
