What is almost completely mind-boggling his how freakin' BRUNELL lit us up. A week ago he couldn't hit a receiver if you held a gun to his head. Just absolutely depressing. If the current trends continue, and Williams is completely ineffective this season and Bush does some positive things...how can you believe it 'clueless' to be upset with the draft choice? A number 1 pick that is actually productive is still a bigger positive than a number 1 pick that isn't. And I don't agree with your opinion that having the more productive player wouldn't 'have even the slightest impact'; that's ridiculous. However, I do agree with you that the idea the whole season depends on that one player (though some superstars do have a hell of an impact) usually doesn't happen; but that isn't the issue. The issue is we want to get better. And it pisses us off if the organization doesn't make the right choices to do that. How you can defend against that opinion is hard to understand. I am not yet going to write off our decision. But it sure as hell is getting harder and harder to think we made a choice that actually helps this team. I know you are firmly on the side of the Texans brass on this...but if this continues to go the way it looks like it may, I don't know how you can still defend their decisions.
I'm loving seeing the Texans lose week in and week out. I was a bigtime Oilers fan. Since the Oilers left us, I haven't been into football at all. The Texans have not made a fan out of me yet. They had a golden chance in this draft. I would have been happy with either VY or Bush. The Texans cut off their nose to spite their face. I believe they truly wanted Bush but Bush's camp was playing hardball with them at the negotiating table and the Texans picked Mario Williams out of defiance. Now because of this boneheaded move, I am hoping the Texans fall flat on their asses, which they are doing nicely thus far. Way to go Mario, keep racking up those 2 tackles a game. You're on your way to the pro bowl son.
The texans let the Redskins convert 3rd and long HB draws or dump off/RB receptions on more than one occasion. That and the fact Mark Brunell broke the consecutive completions tells you all you need to know about the defense. On offense, they might to find some sort of running game to control the clock and keep the pathetic defense off the field in the immediate future, like before next week. Right now they will be lucky to win 5 games. And they have realistically 7 winnable games left barring some upsets: Buffalo, Jets, Browns, Titans(twice), Raiders, Dolphins(with the way they are playing). The bottom line is this will take Kubiak at least 2 or 3 years to get talent necessary to win at a high level.
SwoLy-D... Congratulations! You finally have a target worthy of your Hulk-like Texans rage. Please go ahead and unleash the fury. I won't stop you. Question to Aceshigh: Can you BE any more childish? Rooting for an entire organization to fail just because they didn't listen to you on draft day? It's one thing to criticize the pick (which is okay), but doing so and then actively rooting against the team is ridiculous, IMO. Don't act like a spoiled brat. Now, go sit in the corner with edc (apparently your counterpart when it comes to the Rockets).
All this Bush talk on MNF will be nothing compared 2 the venom that's gonna pour out when Tenn. plays Houston in a few weeks. VY will start that game and might put up some decent numbers. Hell, if mush for brains Brunell can rip uthe Texans apart like that VY is gonna run circles around the Texans. What's even worse is that going into week 14 the Texans have a legitimate shot at being 0-13. That home game against Tenn. has the potential of being the most embarrasing game in Texans history. The whole stadium might turn against the Texans and start cheering for Tenn. ...Just something to think about.
If there's any positive to be gleaned, it's that we won't always be this bad. Case in point: Cincinnati Bengals. Do you all remember how long they were the butt of jokes in the NFL? Seemed like forever. 2nd case in point: Detroit Tigers. They're only 3 seasons removed from a 119-loss season. Amazing. I think it's entirely possible to have much quicker turnarounds in sports these days. Doesn't mean we shouldn't be ticked off, but at least it's a little more hopeful in the current climate.
Three calls could've turned that game around. The Portis fumble. The holding called well after the fact after a 20+ yard first down gain to the Redskins 30. The unnecessary roughness on the fumble return. Oh well. Our defense is absolutely terrible.
I have to disagree with you here Vescey, this is not a childish reaction at all. In fact it's quite understandable. Remember how arrogant the Texans - particularly Richard Smith - were on draft day? Do you recall how they implied that anyone - ANYONE - who dared to question their choice of Mario Williams was a r****ded idiot who didn't know squat about football. This blatantly arrogant attitude rubbed people like Aceshigh the wrong way and did a lot to alienate folks especially when Mario failed to show the slightest signs of talent. Well, it's been 7 games now and everyone can see who didn't know squat. Forget about justifying his being picked No. 1 - the guy looks like he learned how to play football by reading a "How To" book. I can't wait for tonight when ESPN washes everyone's face with the Bush-Williams comparisons. The animosity is further compounded by the fact they passed on a superior offensive talent like Reggie Bush while smugly believing in their so-called magical "Denver" system that has yet to deliver the semblance of a running game. And this will be an issue Texans fans will have to live with for the next 10 years. So don't come down on these guys for being angry because they have every right to pissed. At least they still care enough to be pissed. From what I saw yesterday in Reliant Stadium yesterday, the number of people who still care about this team is dwindling rapidly.
John McLain said on 610 this morning that the record for most yards given up by a defense in a single season is around 6,000. The Texans are on pace to SHATTER that record....at this rate they'll give up well over 7,000 yards. I honestly can not remember seeing a worse defense than this. They are worse than they were last year. I never, ever would have expected that. Remember the Portis screen early on. Where the hell was everyone? He broke past the line and we don't see another Texans player on the screen for 30 yards!!!! Huh??? We were playing 7 guys on defense, yesterday?
you're right. that smugness is what's really bothering me right now. seriously. that makes it very hard to root for them...and i can easily see someone, even Texans fans, smiling a bit when it doesn't work....because the arrogance was just amazing. mario better show up someday.
Hillboy, you are probably one of the most critical posters of Rockets management around, yet despite your animosity and harshness, you still support the team, right? Do you revel in every Rockets loss? Once again, you can criticize as much as you want, but to actively root against the team is just terrible, IMO. Especially from a poster (Aceshigh) who dares to criticize other Astros fans in another current thread. (Uh, hypocrite much?) Look, I despise Greg Davis with the Longhorns (VY only masked his suckiness), but I would never root for the team to fail just so I could see that smile get wiped off his face. It's not being passionate. It's just childish and immature.
I don't know what I find more annoying ... people like you who claim to be fans but their actions tell otherwise or people who write off 21 year old rookies before their career has even started. Quit being so childish, stop living in the past, do what a real fan does and be constructive with criticism (focusing on the now and future). The attention shouldn't be on draft night but on how Mario and the team can develop into what we all expect. Mario is part of the team ... their both linked. You can not be against an individual on the team and still support the team if you’re a fan. Otherwise you’re just a fan of individuals. We've all seen that Mario Williams is very RAW, unpolished and looks lost. I think he needs a good DE to show him the ropes. Since the chances of inking or trading for a good DE are obsolete, the Texans should think about getting a good DE coach for Mario much like getting NBA teams get a big man coach.
That's what I was thinking. I really only saw maybe 4 or 5 players rushing the passer, and once Portis broke the line of scrimmage the only player that was left was Dunta. Maybe half the players were coming off the field for the nickel package.
Don't criticise me because I am one of the few to hold true to my draft day talk. Almost this entire board was swearing off the Texans on draft day. Funny how so many of you started changing your tune as football season got closer. If I am going to become a Texans fan, i'm not gonna accept mediocrity and draft day bungles like that. The fact that so many of you do and went running back to them after what they did really gives them little incentive to improve.
so go bandwagon with the bears or some other flavor of the day. and you are right, the texans have no incentive to improve, the players, the coaches, the whole organization just love being embarssed and have no pride at all.
I understand you don't want to be mediocre. No one does. But, part of being a fan is going through the "lows" as well as the "highs". That's what creates the attachment to a team, being able to say that you were there for the team when times were tough. It makes the highs all that much sweeter. If you're not willing to put in the commitment and share in the anguish, but instead only reap the benefits of the "highs", you're just a bandwagon fan, plain and simple. I gathered from your post that you absolutely fall into the bandwagon category. So, when this team is kicking ass (albeit years from now), don't come crawling back, pretending you "were a fan all along". You've shown your true colors. Also, I've got news for you. The Texans are not a democracy. They make football decisions without OUR input, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. Do you honestly think Kubiak cares what you think? Please. The only saving grace here is that the goals of the fans and that of management are aligned. The only way we as fans could exact change is through economic power, but at the moment, that's just not possible. And besides, the main metric the team uses to evaluate its employees, be them coaches or players, is the same metric that would cause fans to exercise economic power: wins and losses. So, once again, goals are aligned. In the end, things tend to sort themselves out, kind of like a market correction. Going back to your childishness: Many people quit on the Astros in the last few years, only to come back when the team made the playoffs. I myself am admittedly guilty of this. But there's a stark difference between quitting on the team and actively rooting against them. Those people who are quitting on the Texans now are still fans. They just have little to no faith or hope in the team, and given prior history, that's perfectly fine. If the team happens to pull off a few wins, they will rejoice, happy that their team won. But, you, aceshigh, are taking joy in the losing nature of the team, and that's NOT perfectly fine. I really hope you understand the difference here. You can criticize the team all you want, but there's something amiss when you go as far as to root against the team and actually take pleasure from the losses.
I'm with aces. Calling us childish oooooh hurts my feelings..not. I'm not a fan...tried to be, didn't grow up with them, never was...I guess it starts with no tradition other than losing, keeping Capers and Casserly on too long, then screwing the draft. I got nothing against MW, but passing on RB and VY was too much for me. Texans can blow me and every other team in the NFL. Apparently they have already started. 19-10 HAHAHAHAHA
