Yea, he's struggling as a RHB so far in a pretty small sample size of 64 PA but his BB rate and ISO are pretty consistent with his numbers as a LHB so the patience and power seem to be there: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=smoakju01&year=&t=b#plato I wonder what his splits were in college and the minors. He's really not putting up huge numbers from either side yet. Despite that, there are some good signs even if he ends up going back down for a little at some point. Every time I've seen this guy, I've been impressed with something or another about his plate approach, swing, poise, etc... Who knows how he'll end up but I think he has a pretty high ceiling offensively and wouldn't be too concerned about any of his numbers this early into his rookie season given the positives.
The splits seem just as pronounced, on about 1 full season's worth of minor league AB's. It is interesting that despite the splits, many of the secondary numbers like strikeout and walk rates, as well as ground/line drive/fly percentages are fairly consistent from both sides.
I did not. I hate it for guys like that. I remember how bad it was when Roger was pitching for us, especially 2005. Jimenez already has as many wins as Roger had in 32 starts that year with a 1.87 ERA.
I think the numbers that I heard on TV were at the end of his most recent hitting streak. His avg from both sides is down from what they said.
Those are pretty dramatic splits over a lot of PA. The good thing for him is that he excels against RHP as opposed to a guy like Keppinger so that alone won't affect his ability to be an everyday player.
So what's up with all the Rangers fans at MMP? I don't remember this much of a showing in the past. Are they bandwagoners now that Texas is playing well?
brianmctaggart Sunday's lineup: Keppinger 2B, BERKMAN 1B, Pence RF, Lee LF, Michaels CF, Feliz 3B, Manzella SS, Quintero C, Paulino P. Yes, Puma hitting 2 I remember they did this with Baggy in 04 to try and get him going, hopefully it works.
Lee's error allows Hamilton to get to 2nd then score on a Smoak single. Smoak is now 7-for-11 in the series with 2 HR, 2 2B, 8 RBI and 4 R. At the moment, he's rasied his OPS by about 80 points since the start of the series.
Coming into this game, Vlad + Hamilton combined for 553 PA and 33 BB. Smoak had only 205 PA and 29 BB. Pretty impressive for a rook even if those guys, particularly Vlad, don’t walk a lot.
Quintero is constantly getting hit by bats or getting involved in interference plays. I hope he's OK. You could see it right there. Like Mills said, he needs to learn not to cheat forward too much.
He looked to be. At least he walked off on his own. Gotta love Q's heart but he’s cost the team on occasion and he’s giving up his body too much. Cheating forward like that has probably helped us at times too but it’s not worth it. He’s gotta protect himself better.
The AVGs of our 4-8 hitters in today's lineup: .225 .222 .222 .212 .212 (since Cash replaced Q) Then… .304 (Paulino) hah
If you think that's ugly, check out their OBPs and SLGs... they're probably as bad or worse, relatively.
I just saw some nasty chick dig in her nose on TV during the astros game (she was in yellow)...she went inside her nose with her pinky and put the pinky in her mouth...****in nasty skank.
