brianmctaggart Astros first baseman Lance Berkman will remain in Houston this week to continue treatment with physical therapist Matt Holland. OUCH...
Paulino and Norris both throw the ball hard but that's about it. Neither of them have effective enough secondary pitches or command. As a team, we don't get on base enough but that's not news.
Norris needs to develop his slider. Paulino is starting to learn how to throw his breaking ball for strikes. There were several hitters that were completely frozen by that pitch tonight. Paulino had one bad inning. Had he gotten the pitcher out in the 3rd, we are looking at a much different ballgame. I am now hopeful that Paulino will be productive. Previously I held out no hope at all.
Worst start in 27 years. The 1983 Astros started 0-9. On the plus side, that 1983 team finished 85-77. I would also like to point out that 25 of the 29 other teams in the league already have their 2nd win.
I bullpen has been getting hammered while our starters while not great has been decent... Roy 6 innings 3 runs Wandy 6 innings 3 runs Myers 6+innings 4 runs Norris 2 2/3 3 runs Paulino 5 innings 4 runs Not great but enough to keep the team in the game however when you have been outscored 35-12 something is WRONG...
Yeah, he has to continue to work on his command, but man I saw a lot of good things out of him. If our defense (Lee's horrendous play in Left on Howard's shot to left, and Tommy's dropped double play which lead to about 3 runs I believe), would have just been a bit better, he would have been able to stay in the game much longer. Don't forget, he was pitching against the best lineup in baseball, and did extremely well in my opinion.
All I can say is that Ed Wade better give us a crop of prospects that rivals the Phillies during his era there. Because the guy certainly cannot bring in talent through FA to save his life. It's going to get a lot worse before it may get better.
As much as he was emphasizing the need to generate walks and get on base, shoot I'd like to see him as our batting coach.
It's not a secret that hitters should be patient and take walks, in the end it's about the individual players having the patience and good eye to take pitches.
No it's not a secret... and granted much of the time, especially when you're dealing with veteran players, a batting coach isn't gonna have too pertinent of a role. But it just seems to me that for the past several years at least, this team hasn't placed too much of a focus on working pitch counts and generating walks. Too many times I've seen our hitters get 3 quick outs, while the opposing team forces our pitcher to throw 20-25 pitches before getting through an inning.
EDIT: San Diego won tonight in extras and the Angels beat the A's, so 27 of the 29 other MLB team already have their 2nd win.
I was thinking the same thing last night. Wouldn't mind him as our hitting coach or a coach in some capacity. Preferably hitting coach though.
If you look the Astros lineup today, you will see what a joke this team is. Corey Sullivan batting 3rd and Geoff Blum batting 5th. LOL.
I'm kicking @ss on my fantasy team by adding every SP that faces the Astros. Too bad I will miss out on Halladay's no hitter today, someone else owns him.
