Nope. He is capable of some amazing things at the plate.... but if you constantly remember that he's getting paid $17 MILLION dollars a year, you will constantly be ceased to be amazed.

I think it's actually $19 mil this season and each remaining year of his contract.

Lee is only over paid probably by about $2MM imo. not a big deal considering his production and he is in a sorry ass lineup

    Overpaid is overpaid.

This is the list of top paid players THIS year:
    1, Alex Rodriguez, NYY $33,000,000
    2, Manny Ramirez, LAD 23,854,494
    3, Derek Jeter, NYY 21,600,000
    4, Mark Teixeira, NYY 20,625,000
    5, Carlos Beltran, NYM 19,243,683
    6, Carlos Lee, Hou 19,000,000
    7, Magglio Ordonez, Det 18,971,596
    8, Johan Santana, NYM 18,876,139
    9, Carlos Zambrano, Cubs 18,750,000
    10, Barry Zito, SF 18,500,000

The biggest question marks are Lee, Ordonez, and Zito. The rest have had performances after their big contract signings that justified somewhat their level of pay. We all know what caused Beltran to get what he got. Zito has been the biggest bust.

Lee is consistent... which is hard to find. He's also been relatively injury free given his "out of shape" size, minus the freak pinky injury last year. Again, hard to find. However, its still nowhere near worth $17-19 million. Maybe $12-14 million.

Unfortunately we signed him when the market was sky-high for players.

not really, the point is that he is productive. he isn't a drain on the overall salary structure like matsui. $2MM of overpaid from a guy who is productive at the level you signed him isn't really a big deal. like you say they bought high, but they aren't getting burned, like the rockets signing cato and mo taylor

    Exactly.

Lee's been fairly productive despite being slightly overpaid.

6th highest paid player, and he isn't the best player on this team. Arguably he is the 4th or 5th best player on a team that is going to miss the playoffs for 4th straight year.

I wish these Astros had shown up against the Cubs.

    You say he's only 2 million overpaid... I don't think Lee is a 15-17million a year player.

He's like the Jermaine O'Neal of MLB. A guy who makes MVP money, but who has never been considered as an MVP player.

We have 3 of the top 25 highest paid players, and the 25th player is our best(Berkman).

Carlos Lee is one of two LF in the top 25, with the other being Soriano.

I guess you can debate it. I dont see Berkman being that much better than Lee.

Lee's consistent level of production and his durability would argue otherwise.

On a separate note, how did towles look today? I saw he was 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Also does anyone reading this thread think he's going to be a productive major league player?

I would love to say yes, but he cannot seem to hit major league pitching. He was batting .276 at AAA. That usually does not translate into major league success.

    Carlos Lee - .853 OPS - $19 million

    Luke Scott - .824 OPS - $2.4 million

    Ben Zobrist - .925 OPS - $415k

    You make the call.

    Things I'd like to see..

    Astros finish above .500
Bourn finish with a .300+ avg. and 60 SB
    Tejada finish above .300

That's about it, I guess. Then, I hope they sign a big-time starting pitcher in the off-season.

Their career numbers, and even their stats THIS year, would say otherwise.

Berkman has had his share of fluke injuries.... the ACL, and this year the hamstring. I wouldn't exactly call him "non-durable".

every single person on the top 10 list is overpaid, minus johan, IMO. you think teixeira, who is marginally better than carlos lee, is a great deal at 20MM, and lee is waaay overpaid at 1MM less? they are both grossly overpaid.

i'll take caballo for 19MM over arod at 33MM, that's for dang sure.

    Berkman's career OPS = .967

    Lee's career OPS = .849

    Even this year alone

    Berkman = .894
    Lee = .853

Berkman vs. Lee isn't even close. To think otherwise means you don't appreciate what Lance has accomplished. Lance's career averages are better than Lee's across the board.

Finish 2nd in the division. I really want this club to finish ahead of the Cubs.
