so do nieve, wright, and villareal. hopefully sampson can provide something out of the pen from here on out. wowey
Another run given up by Bumkowski. His ERA is now 6.10. I can't see this team overcoming its pitching. Our best starter has a 4.11 ERA and our bullpen is mostly crap. We are officially like the Rangers. All offense, no pitching.
Borkowski working his magic. Towels needs sent down to straighten out. Borkowski should drive him, & Nieve should be tossed in a landfill somewhere along the way.
Here are the ERAs of the 4 pitchers that have made an appearance in today's game: Sampson: 6.04 Nieve: 18.00 Wright: 5.00 Bumkowski: 6.86 Hmmm....
It will only be slightly less of a bad day. I know it's only 1 game, but the realities of our pitching staff are starting to outweigh the optimism that our offense can overcome it.
11 runs in the 6th and 7th for the Phillies. Half of our pitching staff should go bury their heads in the dirt after this game.
Backe and Chacon have been respectable. Wandy was really good early, and will hopefully return to that. Moehler has been been pretty good for a #5. Get Roy O back as an ace and the starters are fine. The bullpen is crap? Valverde leads in saves, Brocail has been a rock, and Byrdak still has a 0.00 ERA. Get Geary and his 1.47 ERA back in there, and that's over half your pen. We need Villarreal to get back on track. He's better than this. Borkowski is garbage and Nieve isn't any different. The injuries to Wandy and Geary combined with Roy O being someone else have forced a heavier load on the bullpen -- with Geary hurt, Brocail and Byrdak likely being unavailable and Sampson only going 5, we had to rely on some combination of Nieve, Villarreal, Borkowski, and Wright to get us 3 innings and up to Papa Grande. They failed miserably. Getting Geary back, and moving Sampson to the pen to replace the suckitude of Borkowski and Nieve will go a long way. If Villarreal gets back to what he can be, this pen can be great.
couldn't agree less. i for one, already knew that sampson, wright, borkowski, and nieve were awful. villareal is the only other awful reliever on the staff, and of all those, wright is the only one that's really been used frequently in significant situations. we need one more solid to good reliever. that will be an easy get at the deadline.
That's the kind of stuff fans of poor pitching teams say. I'd love for you to be right but this sounds like prayer or extreme optimism.
We have a very good offense but not the best. Several of the other teams with good offenses in the NL have far better pitching. I think we are much further than one reliever away from fixing this pitching staff or even making it good enough to allow our offense to make up for it.
i have to agree with Nikestrad geary, brocail, valverde is a solid 7,8,9. obviously the bullpen isnt deep but they have enough players to be reliable with a lead. when one of those players gets hurt and the starter cant go the expected 6 innings. the weak depth of the bullpen will show just like it did today.
Fair enough. Geary, Brocail and Valverde are a decent combination. We will need Geary to get healthy and for all 3 of those guys to stay healthy. As far as the starting rotation goes, do you really believe that our 2 through 5 will keep us in contention? I am assuming that Oswalt will get straightened out and be our ace.
my reason for optimism is that Ed Wade is watching these games too, and he knows the staff needs to be improved, and he's able to see who's worthless and who isn't, and is doing so while we are maintaining a record of 6 games over .500 and 1 game out of the division/wc lead. we are 6 months into the guy's tenure, and he's already worked magic it's a work in progress, and there's no doubt in my mind that today's roster will have significant changes by the deadline and/or end of season.
