Setting up arbitrary distinctions and expectations is the best way to be constantly disappointed. He may be the current #2 starter on the team, but I don't think the team views him as a classic #2 otherwise they would be trying to add a Samardja or Kazmir. I said it during the off-season, he can perform really well but ideally would be a #3 start with his profile. I'd think he's doing fine. He was due for some regression from last season and hopefully is just in a mini-slump.
You mean this  <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gpjOzMWuAQ0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I thought he was speaking metaphorically... I don't think that was actually him. Judging by that guys' twitter page, and JR's other posts last night, I highly doubt that was him at the game. JR was actually posting stuff that was said on the broadcast last night... while also making posts in various other forums. Either he wasn't at the game, or the reason he got the ball to the eye was because he was making a lengthy post in the NBA Finals thread.
Why wouldn't we be looking to add those guys even if McHugh was repeating last year? We need 3 pitchers we can trust in the postseason. Most playoff rotations feature someone better than Scott Feldman in the #3 spot. Jeff Samardzija isn't a #1 or #2 guy necessarily either. He's now been starting for 4 years, and he was really only great last season. Similar could be said about Kazmir.
LOL That's not me. That's what the guy on the broadcast said. Sorry for any confusion. Not me. Not me. Not me.
Kazmir is a little bit different because he was good prior to being injured, looked completely finished and then had a very good last year and a solid season this year. I agree with you that Jeff Samardzija is vastly overrated. Kazmir would really be a nice addition but I wouldn't over pay for him as he is a pending free agent.
He reviewed transcripts of interviews where fans where hit by foul balls and pieced together the best possible story... its intelligence is growing...
Kazmir has a 3.65 ERA over the last 3 seasons (ERA+ of 104). He's my preference if we don't go for Hamels. He should come much cheaper than the other guys, plus we may re-sign him to a reasonable contract.
Agree, but numbers so far are more of a 4 than a 3, thats a major disappointment on expectations from him.
Take away the Giants game (7 ER in 4.2 innings) and his ERA is 3.68. He has also provided value because he has pitched at least 6 innings in every other game except for a 5.2 inning 1 ER stint in his second start.
Again, agree, but last 2 outings he has allowed 4 runs in 1 inning. I have to tell you, i was expecting a lot more from him this year, so i have to admit i may be to tough on him, but thats only because i am expecting big things from him, why? Because he has a 92 mph fastball, a nice curve, a nice slider and pin point control. Yes, he allowed all those runs at SF, but after that, he has not been dominant at all
lol..you had us fooled JR... we're just trying to figure out if you are human, a cyborg, or just a super computer embedded in the Astros Mission control
I think the problem isn't as much McHugh's performance, but rather your expectation of what he should be doing. Being a guy who we got off waivers, he should be expected to be "dominant". The fact that he was more than solid last year and has been solid this year means he has already exceeded what any of us thought he'd be when we got him. Watching the 4 run inning was tough, but watching him shut them down after that should speak volumes about the strides he is making as a pro. That shouldn't be overlooked.
