Asking is a good sign..... remember you have D -mo Ready to come over.. some of you guys are a little over the top and dramatic... we will be fine with two 7 footers in the front court..and if they can get an even better option at center... That's even better.

Les has to pay him 5 mil, 5 something mil, then 14 something mil.

For salary cap and trade purposes, it's 8.3 mil, 8.3 mil, and 8.3 mil.

The contracts are close in average, but not THAT close

    3 years >> 6 years. EASILY

I do think the average is too much. And there are Kelvin Cato similarities. There's even Jim McIlvaine bust potential. But its also the price of business to pry away a restricted free agent. Gotta make sure the other team can't match.

Aggrey Sam from CSN Chicago explaining that he's not surprised at all that Asik was offered $25M over 3 years because teams across the league agree that Asik is one of the best defensive centers around:

i really don't understand why a lot of cf'ers don't like the asik deal, i mean, if chicago matched the offer, who will be our next target center?

Thanks to LandryMegaBeast for posting the ESPN article.

Let's please review some important tidbits from Mr. Hollinger:

On to the next question: Is he worth it?

That's a bit of an eye-of-the-beholder question. Asik's advanced stats support the subjective viewpoint that he's one of the five or 10 best defensive players in basketball, and defense in general tends to be wildly underrated in the free-agent market (although weirdly, not in the draft). He is also, objectively, a monstrous rebounder, with his 20.1 rebound rate ranking sixth in the NBA last season.

Asik is a terrible offensive player, however, with bad hands, poor touch and a proclivity for illegal screens. Advanced stats seem to indicate that he takes away almost as much with his offense as he does with his defense -- but that overall he's a plus, even compared to the league average.

And that, in the big picture, makes him a second-tier starting center. And you know how much those are worth? About $8 million a year. Houston should know; they just paid nearly the same amount to the departed Samuel Dalembert.

Listen to the second half of this clip. The analyst answers the question: What is Chicago's backup plan to losing Asik? The answer is: there isn't one. Why?

Because any center in this league that is 1) Better than Asik and 2) Available will cost more.

3 years 8 mil/year is the going rate for a second-tier starting C. Those of you hating on this deal please explain who we could get that would be better/cheaper, and is available. If your answer is Camby, do you think Morey is somehow unaware of him or isn't trying/hasn't tried to sign him?

So how much would we have left to spend if Asik signs? Around 12 million?

So why didnt Morey go as for Gortat. He offered him a pi$s poor MLE offer that Orlando matched easily. Why didnt he try make it harder for Orlando?

Too late to try on Asik now.

$0 cap room. Can still amnesty. Most likely acquisitions need to be trades or S&Ts.

Not a big deal since the team really isn't chasing any FA other than Eric Gordon and he's more likely to be a S&T guy than a straight up sign-and-hope-Hornets-don't-match guy.

McHale should be able to work with Asik to make him less of an offensive liability.

His height alone should command some respect on the offensive end, which should free up some of our perimeter players. All he needs to learn is to catch in the post, and pass out when help comes across.

What if Asik, when he agreed to the $8mil/yr offer, did not understand the nature of the contract structure proposed to him and what implications it would have for Chicago? What if Asik, happy with the average salary, signed the contract hoping that Chicago would match it? Nothing is official yet as none of this can be consummated until the 11th. Can he change his mind and ask Houston to re-write the contract to reflect something that doesn't exploit loopholes in the CBA?
