this team has the best mix of running, passing, and defense that i've seen in awhile. since steelers 2006 superbowl team probably. alex smith is the absolute perfect game-managing qb, which capability of turning it on and carrying team 2 or 3 times/year. very underrated.
He's the perfect example of a #1 pick who would be much further along now had he had proper development. That being said, he will eventually live up to his pick... as he's the starting QB for a perennial SB contender now.

I watched the 49ers a lot last season. As much as Chris Collinsworth yaps too much, he's dead on about how much Alex Smith has improved over last year, when he was just a "game manager" that avoided mistakes. This year, Smith has gone to another level and calling him a game manager sells him short.
calling him a game-manager isn't meant negatively. it's a team that's perfectly balanced. they don't need a tom brady throwing for 300+ and 3 td's a game. they need an ego-free qb who is capable of making all the throws, and possesses the capability of putting the team on their shoulders in the event that the dam breaks and a shootout breaks out. he's perfect for all that. it's a credit to him. ben roethlisberger is more or less a game manager, and certainly was when he won his 1st ring.
I think a simple way to look at a game-manager is this: if the team is down 20 at halftime and you have to abandon the running game, is this a QB you want leading your team on a comeback? In that scenario, I want Rodgers, Brees, Manning, Brady. I don't want Smith, Schaub, etc. That's the difference between even a great game manager vs. an elite QB or whatever. (I don't know where I'd put Big Ben in that spectrum) But that said, the 49ers and Texans might be the most complete teams in the league - and the idea is that they should never be down by 20 at halftime, so it's irrelevant for Smith and Schaub.
not arguing that Schaub's in the same tier as Rogers, Brees, or Manning but Schaub has brought the Texans back to tie the game after being down 21-0.
Schaub's 4th quarter, 2nd half, and 3rd down qb rating beats all those guys but PManning and Brady, iirc. Although since 2011 was kind of a lost year that might have changed. Esp for Rodgers, although he has virtually never led the Packers to a come from behind win in his entire career.
That's how I'm feeling. What a pathetic showing? All of those fools should be punched in the face for that performance.
Sure - but much of that is because Schaub is asked to simply be smart and efficient, and isn't generally asked to do as much. With a strong running game and more of a controlled offense, Schaub is the perfect fit (as is Smith in San Fran) - and probably a better fit than those other guys might be. But if you need that huge comeback (Giants or Patriots today, for example) where you might need your QB to throw 50 times and it's all on the QB to make huge plays, the other guys seem like a better choice. That said, it may simply be because they are put in that position more often, whereas Schaub is rarely stuck in that scenario - as macalu pointed out, Schaub has done it before. But when I picture a game manager vs a QB-leader, that's how I envision the difference. I'd rather have Schaub on the Texans than Eli Manning because Eli's going to do a lot of bad things to go along with his great play. But I'd rather have Eli than Schaub on the Giants, because they need a QB that consistently can throw for 300+ yards (and occasionally 400 or today's absurd 500) since they don't have a running game to rely on. As a result, they'll win more miracle games, but they'll also lose to a lot of teams they shouldn't.
