Of course you can when the first two months you didn't have your best hitter healthy. BTW, we should go ahead and trade Andy Pettitte, huh? I mean, one start and 7 ERs in just over 4 innings? Season over.
well I am fighting a losing battle considering no one agrees with me. I will just leave the opinions that I have already stated and leave it at that. I should have expected some horrible homerism when I jumped in this thread. Assuming Roger does not come back the Astros will back up my statements.
No, we just get tired of the CONSTANT b****ing and negativity. Go ahead and hate, its ok. Its just going to make it that much more fun when I get to tell you how incredibly stupid you (and the other haters) are at the end of the season. Now hurry up and jump off
Berkman was hurt. Now, he's not. Additionally, an injured Bagwell has been replaced with a healthy Preston Wilson. Just because you do not acknowledge it does not make this less valid. Now, that's just stupid. We all want to see a WS title for the Astros. Different points of view is what makes talking sports fun, until people start attacking one another. There are far too many variables to base it on "the current roster". That's why they play the games. You can sit on the edge of your seat and enjoy it or you can b**** for 160 more games; it's your choice. That's also just stupid. People here have a valid point about the offense, and you're dismissing it as "homerism" or "do you watch baseball???" Presenting yourself in this manner, can you expect anything other than backlash? Just take a deep breath and consider a different point of view for just ten seconds: what if Lance Berkman is healthy all year last year? Would the offense more resemble June-September, or would it more resemble April and May?
I love Andy as a person and a pitcher. He is a true professional IMO and it hurt me to see him get shelled last night. Our pitching has really taken a hit this offseason with Roger being gone and some of the horrible spring training outings by the back end of the staff(Backe, Rodriguez) and this is a big reason why I feel the Astros won't make the playoffs. Everyone makes predictions and this is my opinion. I thought message boards were for sharing your opinion. You guys fail to understand that I would love nothinng more than for the Astros to prove me wrong, and if they do I will come back here and let you all get your shots in.
That's odd, given that our offense scored 6 runs and 5 runs in two of those games. We lost two of those games due to bad pitching, and two due to bad offense. Revisionist history sucks.
Of course, St. Louis lost Matt Morris, Larry Walker, Reggie Sanders, Mark Grudzielanek, and has a gimpy Scott Rolen and a gimpy Jim Edmonds, yet they are given a free pass, right? Who exactly do you think is going to win the division?
Why would you count a small part of a season in which one of the best hitters in baseball didn't play when trying to project a full season in which one of the best hitters in baseball is playing? Please explain. Me.
That just, like, your *opinion*, man. Other people have different opinions, and all opinions are equal, and people should never, ever get called out for having [silly, wrong, poorly-thought-out, baseless, really f'ing stupid, etc...] opinions because they might get their feelings hurt & take their opinions & go home. This *is* a message board after all. And that's what message boards are for - giving everyone a soapbox to say whatever they feel like without ever having to be questioned. Or something like that.
Did you forget all the runners LOB? It was our hitting that caused us to not win games but that is my opinion and you have yours. Do not try to state your arguement as fact. A gimpy Scott Rolen that hit a grand slam on opening day. Yeah that is the guy and that is the team that will win the division. Are you trying to say that the Astros have a better overall team than the Cards? Seriously? Why does everyone want to attack me for my opinion on the current team and the lack of moves made in the offseason? You can't be a bandwagon fan Master Baiter when you have been cheering for them for 20 years. You guys are really taking me the wrong way. We all have hopes and opinions on what our team will do going into a season. I call it like I see it. I hope the Astros win the World Series but my opinion on what will actually happen is quite different. My favorite team was close to winning it all last year and I feel they have taken a step back. Am I wrong to feel that way?
I try to make points and back them up. You don't agree and that is cool with me. I like to discuss sports and what I think will happen. But there is no reason to be immature with your replies.
in some ways you're a victim of reaction based on what we saw here last year, brent. we had people here during the world series talking about how the astros sucked. during the freaking world series. so a few of us are pretty reactionary in that way. in addition, these guys have played 2 games out of 162 and everyone's ready to extrapolate that out for the season. last year alone should tell you that you can't do that. i don't think the yankees are gonna finish the season right at .500,, either. as for the Cards...why aren't we better? we were better in the playoffs. we moved on...they went home. they added a rolen who may or may not really be all that healthy. we added preston wilson. they lost sanders, morris and walker. we lost clemens...maybe. baseball's a weird game. the difference between average and great are so slight, they're barely noticeable. any team can beat any team on any given day. much more so than the other sports that way. until the Cards take over as NL Champs, they have the burden of proof. i like our chances.
I haven't been reading this thread, but why on Earth is Wandy Rodriguez starting tonight? I can think of probably about 5 picthers who should be starting before the guy. What about Backe, Buccholz, Astacio, Hirsch, or even Troy Patton. I don't think Wandy is good enough to be a starter on this staff. Hopefully, he'll come out and prove me wrong, and I'll be eating crow tomorrow.
Brandon Backe has a small problem with his back and is slated to start friday. Wandy is our #4 starter so he gets pushed up to today.
You're right and I'm sorry, but I was responding in kind to you. You have asked someone if he ever watches baseball, accused people of "terrible homerism", etc. who were making valid points. Valid points which you dismissed without even giving ample consideration. So, I responded with about as much respect as I feel that type of posting merits: very little.
So your argument is that our offense is so bad that we got tons of runners on but could only score 5 or 6 of them? I'm just curious why you think losing Clemens and getting a healthy Berkman, as well as adding Preston Wilson is a worse offseason than losing Larry Walker, Reggie Sanders, Mark G, Matt Morris, having Scott Rolen coming off of two shoulder surgeries and having an already injured Jim Edmonds.
thank you MadMax for a decent response considering I have not flamed anyone but yet I am getting burned. And I did not post on here when the world series was going on and I find it extremely hard and foolish to bash a team that has made it to the world series. Win or lose I rooted for them as hard as I could and was extremely sad when they could not pull it through. It is simply inexcuseable to bash a team while they are playing for the championship. Maybe I made the wrong move in stating on this message board that I don't feel the Astros have the players to get into the playoffs. This does not mean that I don't think they will be good or they won't win at least 80 games(which I think they will) but that I think other teams are slightly better. You are correct that the difference between being a good team and a great team is not that big. As for the Cards (who I hate even though I coach my sons little league team and we are the Cards ) they have Edmonds, Pujols, Rolen, Eckstein, Molina, etc which IMO makes for a better lineup than Berkman, Biggio, Wilson, Lane, Ensberg, etc. I also feel they have better starting pitching with Carpenter, Mulder, Suppan, Marquis, Ponson vs. the Astros Oswalt, Pettite, Backe, Wandy, (and whoever will be the 5th starter). That is why and I could be completely wrong but that is the way I feel. I do understand there are 160 games left to be played but the reason for me thinking the Astros will not make the playoffs is not from the first 2 games. I have felt this way since the beginning of spring training. Once again I hope I am wrong because I will be cheering for my Astros in every game, but I try every year to give myself a thought about what will happen this upcoming season for my team and this is what I have come up with for the Astros this year.
