Talk about the series here. Please no PBP in this thread. Unless otherwise noted all games are on CSN-H (for about 40% I guess). 5-2 Felix Hernandez, RHP vs. Brad Peacock, RHP 7:10 5-3 Hisashi Iwakuma, RHP vs. Dallas Keuchel, LHP 3:10 MLBN 5-4 Brandon Maurer, RHP vs. Collin McHugh, RHP 1:10
We got to Felix a little bit last time, might struggle to even get a base runner off him tonight I'm afraid
Offensively I hope that Springer is just pressing, and trying to adjust to the show, and will eventually be great In the field, he is really bad . . .I mean Springer in the OF is no better than Altuve on the bases
He's pressing on defense too. Would have been nice to get his feet wet earlier... he'll eventually adjust.
Hope you are right, cause right now he looks like a guy that should not be in the majors. It's one thing to struggle early at the plate, but he looks really bad in the field
Maybe they should send him down till he's 27? Or attempt to sign him to a longer contract prior to him putting on a MLB uniform to account for the adjustment time? The jump from the minors to the majors is exponential... far more than the difference between rookie ball and AAA. Most players fail in their first call up, or their first 100 AB's. I know this front office wants all the players to play at every level, and wants them all to stick the first time they're called up, but the odds are still highly against a player catching fire in his first game in the majors. The fact that he's never been this bad in the field speaks more to the mental aspect of the game than simply the increased level of competition... he's making mistakes that most minor leaguers wouldn't make. He clearly needs more time to get comfortable to the big-league life (its everything - the stadiums, food, per diem, hotels, travel arrangements, ladies, all games on TV somewhere, hanging with grown men/old guys vs. mostly all young guys... a lot more to consider than simply the increased level of competition). If he's still making these mistakes in a few months, or after his first demotion/callup, or next year, then maybe he'll never have it... but its going to take more than a few weeks to make that call.
Yea, it certainly takes a while for players to adjust to the majors. There is no doubt about that The way he looks in the field is scary though, and he could certainly adjust and be fine. Has the look of a guy who mentally isn't a big league player though. Hopefully it gets better As for the attempt to sign him to a longer contract comment, honestly it would be interesting to see if he would sign that deal if offered right now. My guess, he would grab a pen and sign on the line
He had 3 errors his entire minor league career, these lazy misplays are not standard. He'll calm down, he still may or may not be good enough, but his defense will be fine. Scouts universally praised it.
And maybe a little success at the plate tonight will help him to settle in. Springer is a microcosm of the Astros overall rebuild. If we were going to have patience in bringing guys along after stripping the club bare that includes going through some growing pains at the major league level.
Hey, my reverse jinx wheels pic worked  Springer, 1/6. But one he got counted for the win. Good job.
Must be a SOF that writes the clickable link verbiage for ESPN. "Springer laces walk off single in 11th."
LOL! Springer's poor play justifies Lunhow's decision to keep him down so long. Kid doesn't seem ready.
Or, it shows that he would need an adjustment period, like virtually ALL call ups do, before they find their niche. In that case, this "struggle" could have happened last September, and he could have hit the ground running this season... but of course the team would have lost an extra year of potential club control.
Kid is nervous, the defense on display has been awful. I think he will turn it around, but he has been dreadful thus far.
So, Springer finally has something positive happen and Porter chooses to sit him for his first day of rest.
Agreed, he has. He looks like he's trying to outrun what his legs can actually do. Just saying that MORE time in the minors likely does nothing to help that. Just delays when the nervousness starts, and when the eventual "adjustment" begins. AAA is more like rookie ball or college baseball (in terms of atmosphere, game-day presentation, stadiums, travel accommodations, day-to-day way of life) than it is like the big leagues.
