How good was The Logo? hard to take players back then seriously who dribbled all over the floor with only the right hand.
I remember watching a charles barkley interview where he said that Mchale in his opinion was the only unguardable post player in the league at the time. That is a very high compliment coming from a great inside player during a time where talented big men were abundent.
one of the best PGs in the history of the sport IMO and my favourite player of all time. I think i read somewhere that stated him and Magic were the only players to average above 20 points and 10 assists for a season. not sure about that though
So I was talking to one of my mentors who was from Milwaukee during the 80s and said TERRY CUMMINGS was an incredible player. How true is this? Looking at his stats he was pretty good but he said he was probably the best PF he has seen as far as shooting skills, rebounding, and over all athleticism and IQ.
How good was Chris Mullen? He was a multi AllStar/DreamTeamer/3pt specialist. He is in the hall of fame but I can name multiple players with better stats that won't make it in.
Run TMC was arguably the most amazing trio of wings ever put together. Those few years they played together produced some incredible basketball. Sadly they moved Richmond for a bust big man who never panned out...but how could you blame them? They started Tyrone Hill and Alton "Postered" Lister. The NBA back then didnt see many teams moving pieces, especially bigs. Hell, Drexlers Blazers had awful bigs too. People thing todays NBA lacks decent bigs...nothing compares to the glut of CRAP many teams fielded at the 4/5. Which I guess is why Ewing/Olajuwon/Malone/Robinson/Zo looked so damn good.
Grandmama was DYNAMIC. Pretty much a beefy SF that played the 4. Stretch 4 would be an understatement, the guy can straight up MASH it on you. Speed, rebounding, shooting range, tenacity. Plus...who doesnt love the nickname GRANDMAMA. Kevin, have you met my grandmama?
I can answer this personally. Mitch Richmond was the first player I can remember in which I realized that one person in basketball can almost single-handedly win a game for a team. Mitch was on Golden State and they were playing the Rockets- I think late 80s, if I'm not mistaken. And in the 4th quarter, he just unloaded on the Rockets. At one point, we threw 3 guys on him, and he was just throwing up the most absolutely ridiculous shots and making them. I'm sure Jordan did this, as well, but I can't remember a single game of him doing this that I personally watched until the 90s. Richmond was the first one where, it literally made no difference who you threw at him, he scored at will and literally by himself won that game for the Warriors.
Kevin Johnson was the fastest player of his generation. Incredibly quick and he could also leap. Very good passer, fearless at driving to the hoop and had a good mid-range jumper. Never really had 3 pt range. Underrated PG who didn't have much talent around him in his prime. Correction: Players other than Magic and Kevin Johnson have averaged 20pts and 10 ast in a season. The most notable case was '72-'73 when Nate Archibald became the only player ever to lead the league in scoring (34.0 ppg) and assists (11.4 apg ) in the same season. A few other's who've done it are Isiah Thomas, Oscar Robertson, Deron Williams and Chris Paul.
Cummings was very good, would be an all star in today's game as well. Great college player as well, but no, not best skill set... Elite but not the best... Coleman or Webber gets that award.
Man, no joke. I fear Coleman gets overlooked in NBA annals. The dude was straight money and on a career trajectory to be the best PF in NBA history b/c he was the first PF that I can recall that had the low post game + 3pt specialty. Too bad his poor work ethic and attitude was his undoing. Coleman should have/ would have gone down as one of the top players in the league if his mind was right.
DAMN I remember Coleman. I had his jersey as a kid, the guy was beast. As a kid we had a winter home in NY and would go catch a Nets game every now and then just to see him. So sad he got fat. What a waste. As to the Jerry West question... Is anyone alive that remember him playing? Dude is old enough to become a logo.
