that very likely falls on shannahan - that was his... second game to have full control of the offense? it wouldn't shock me if kubiak began to treat yesterday as a learning experience for kyle.
Slaton looks like he has lost his explosiveness, when Chris Brown was in the game he hit the hole quicker than Steve has all preaseason and in yesterday's game.
So, lack of in game adjustments is on the coordinator. Fact that our scheme is terrible against 3/4 and we know it going in is just one of those things. You aren't big on accountability for the coach are you? I'm not on the Fire Kubiak bandwagon by any stretch. I think he can be successful, but I'm also not on the "excuse away" things for Kubiak team either.
well, look............. cowher has his system, too, and the texans aren't built for it. at all. a radical departure of any kind (like cowher) really almost starts this thing over. again. *if* we're gonna talk about replacements (and i'm sure as heck not suggesting any change)... imo, the only sensible one is mike shannahan. possibly gruden.
Fair point. I like Bill Cowher, but to be honest I'm not sold on him being a savior for any franchise. What really is HIS system? Did he have GM control in Pittsburgh? He had a lot of good risk taking o-coordinators come through under him, and he had Dick running his defense at its peak. I could see him failing at his next job. I don't think there is anyway Mike Shannahan takes this job if we fire Kubiak.
i'm spitballing ideas; i have no idea what degree kyle and/or the 3-4 are responsible for yesterday. the alternative is kubiak rips the calls from shannahan's grip and wreaks his confidence and development - better? i've said repeatedly yesterday was a mess, and that everyone should be held accountable: coaches, players, gameplan.......
one of my favorite books is "Good to Great," by Jim Collins. Great read if you haven't read it. Anyway, one of the ideas I believe in is you either have the right guy, or you don't. And if he's not the right guy to make you great...so that you're not merely settling for good...then you get him off the bus as soon as possible. Once you've arrived at that point, you do it. It's painful. It may mean you take steps backwards. But if you really think that the guy isn't the right guy...the kind of guy who can get you to a championship level...you kick him off the bus. I'm getting there with Kubiak. I don't get to make the decisions that count though.
My thoughts on the Texans poor performance is simply bad gameplan and even worse execution. I have mentioned this before and will continue to say the Texans need to stop playing conservative while trying to stick to a gameplan that wasn't working at all. Our secondary is weak and unable to make tackles thats why Jets players kept bouncing off our guys or just went to the endzone untouched. Those are mental mistakes by the coaching staff expecting rookie corner McCain to handle man to man in an all out blitz. The best schemes are effective when blitz is disguized with zone coverage. Now the conservative part is Kubiak trying to play a normal pace with no sense of urgency in the offense. Go no huddle, spread the receivers, do something different to confuse the Jets defense. No we just sat there trying to run the same freaking play with Slaton over and over again while the Jets wrecked havoc with the penetration in the backfield on tackles for losses. That is just bad coaching, in such a situation you try to speed up the game force the defense to play your pace and make them play coverage. The bottom line is from hereon the Texans need to make a choice either play with some guts to take gambles on offense or continue to play this conservative style and get man handled. For an idea how things should be done on offense watch the Patriots tonight, if the running game is not working then Brady will start to throw short pass and screens underneath coverage as a substitute for the run. Pats are excellent at making you pay for sending too many guys at the line, Brady takes 3 steps and zip the ball to Welker for a small gain of 5 yards. Above all the Texans need to play with a gamblers attitude. This has to start next week against the Titans, we need to come out guns blazing taking shots at the endzone and showcreativity in our offense or else we will suffer the same fate we did yesterday. There should be no holding back or managing the game, try to score and win the game on every drive.
I'm so pissed about the lack of effort/execution...I don't know what to say. Too much emotion, I'm going to wait till after the Titans game, before I can say something...
Execution. Although what pisses me off the most, is that we kept the starters on the offensive line because they were so good toward the end of last year. Now its like we are starting all over again with building chemistry.
i would argue the good far outweighs the bad with kubiak thus far. he's rebuilt this team from scratch and in relatively short time, all things considered. if he is let go, someone is going to inherit a mighty sturdy foundation. and the offense, his speciality, is light-years improved, and should be, by year's end, among the nfl's best, as it was last year. my take from yesterday: i don't expect the offense to be that bad all year, and hopefully, the defensive performance was a preview of how they'll play this year. i was pretty impressed, overall, with the defense. they had their hands wrapped around three TOs, they forced a lot of third and longs, they harrassed sanchez pretty consistently.... obviously, there's room for improvement (especially on third down), but i thought they looked much improved and it's something to build on.
i can't imagine that happening. the connection with Kubiak is why I'd be shocked if, assuming he's replaced, shannahan would be his replacement.
why is that outrageous? are there going to be a slew teams offering him a head coaching position? i mean, yes - it's highly unlikely. but not *as* unlikely if shannahan were involved. that's all i'm sayin'.
You make me laugh a lot of the time with your position on this team. 1) If we fire Kubiak I really, REALLY doubt Shannahan is going to come here out of respect for Kubes. 2) There are very few people in any profession would be OK being fired from their job and then asked to stay on as the underling to the person taking over for them, even if they are being replaced by their friend. I'm sure he'd rather go be an O-C with another team as opposed to being the OC for the team that just told him he wasn't good enough.
There is no argument from any logical Texans fan that where they are now with Kubiak and where they were before are 2 different teams. It's just disheartening to see the absolute lack of preparation for freaking Week 1. Rex Ryan was hired on Jan. 21, 2009. The second the schedule came out, tapes of Ryan's defenses should have been studied like a 13-old boy studies his first Playboy. It looked like they were completely taken off guard by the schemes Ryan threw at them...which have been around since his daddy's days. The lack of readiness is inexcusable. I did feel a lot better about the defense yesterday...on 1st and 2nd downs. How they consistently fell apart on 3rd and 4th downs is beyond me. I don't count the long runs in the 2nd half as that was more to blame on the Texans offense not being able to stay on the field for any length of time. I also feel a little better today knowing that it's probably impossible for the offense to play that poorly. They are much much much better than that. If they have any shred of professionalism, they are horribly embarrassed today and will be much more focused this week. After that game, I wouldn't blame KEYE (Austin's CBS affiliate) for not showing the Texans next week...but luckily, they're playing Austin's 3rd local team, the titans.
thanks! did i say he would? ever? flip back through this or any other page of any other thread on any other forum and please point out where i said shannahan would do anything. i said that, based on the personnel and the system that's been installed here, he'd be the *best* candidate. period. that's it. that's pretty undeniable. that doesn't mean i think he would or should be the next coach - but he makes more sense than cowher, or practically any other coach who'd require you to rebuild again. it's just an oddly unique circumstance that the mentor of your head coach, the guy with two super bowl rings and hall of fame-like resume; the guy who provided kubiak the blueprint for building an organization, would be available *IF* the texans were to let kubiak go. (and, frankly - who knows what else might be out there, and yeah - shannahan likely would never take the job... but he'd be a fool not to at least consider it. and mcnair would be a fool not to at least consider it himself. didn't van gundy and adleman have a connection? it's not unprecendented by any stretch.) he's from houston, he lives in houston. he'd likely would go elsewhere, of course - assuming elsewhere wanted him. if marinelli can land a job on the back of 0-16, i'm sure kubiak could, too. i'm just saying that, while 99.9999999999999999% of the time, he'd be gone, no question,*IF* they hired shannahan, that changes the situation completely based on their history, and his ties here. it'd be a really unique circumstance. look, enough: i'm not engaging in this - i think kubiak is the right guy; at the very least, i'm going to give him more than 3 hours of the 2009 season to prove me right/wrong.
I was scared about this game, but DANG. I did not see the jail house assault coming. Thank god for the coogers or I might be on suicide watch
