check their schedule - they play buffalo twice, oakland, cincinnati, jacksonville & tampa bay - those are 6 games they should win. if miami falls back to earth this year (likely), that's another team they play twice that they can beat - throw in 1 or 2 "upsets"... and 9+ wins becomes very realistic.

that's a good football team right there.

yep but we still got man-handled today..

    still counts as one loss..

somehow pull off a win next week and we can get this season back on track

It's still shocking to go over the game in your head.

We looked so bad it's hard to imagine things turning around. I'm not saying the Texans won't win some games but...

8-3 last year before favre went in the tank. ryan & scott upgrade the defense significantly. they're a good team. i figured something like today might happen - i think everyone forgot what ryan did to the texans last year.

Gruden would worry me a little. I may be mistaken but wasn't there a bit of a mutiny at the end of his tenure in Tampa? Don't think alot of his players had much respect for him at the end. With as tough as Cowher is you never heard of anyone not respecting him or having his back

    It can't get any worse.

The coaching staff has to put the players in the best position to do well. They have talked about it but it didn't translate onto the field today.

I had a similar post earlier in this thread.

It's still highly dissapointing bc it shouldn't have been about them today. It should've been about us.

    They executed their gameplan perfectly.

If this game was on the road, I wouldn't be nearly as concerned. I might buy the "just one game" shrug off.

Unfortunately, it's an incredibly sllppery slope in the NFL. Things break your way (#1 - health), you go deep into thepostseason. You let chances slip by, you finish below 0.500.

    The formula's simple:
Beat your peers and lessers at home, split your division games, take care of business when you're favored on the road - playoffs. Take care of business and manage to steal a couple of road upsets? Contender status.

You want playoffs, you've got 6 losses to cash in. There went 1 chip out of 6. Were this the Pats at home, okay. At Indy, okay. This loss? Not okay.

Schaub being thoroughly outplayed by a rookie making his debut on the road? Embarrassing. Schaub gets a 56 rating, leaning too much on dump check downs, and missing BADLY when given time (I counted 7 severely behind the receiver or at their ankles).
    C-

The O-line couldn't run block in the preseason, and still can't, getting blown backwards or put onto the grass way too often. They were respectable pass blocking in August, but wow were they de-pantsed today. As noted, Jets were missing pass rushers, and they still had no problem keeping Schaub's alarm clock under 5 seconds.
    F

Slaton is good, but it is clear that he can't produce without help. Less than 2 yds/carry, though? Troubling.
    C-

Receiving Corps is arguably the class of the NFL, but what can they do when the playcalling and QB can't deliver?
    C

Kubiak/Shannahan - god AWFUL play calling. Again, look at this offense. Elite receiving, good QB, an O-line that struggles run blocking. Why are you still so determined to have the run set up the pass? Not until the lead was 17 did Kyle move away from running each 1st down. Too many 3rd in long situations with short yard pass attempts. The playcalling needs to keep the defense on their heels, and today it made it easy to anticipate.
    D

Secondary still can't tackle with whiffs (Ferguson, Robinson) costing the team 10 yards at a pop. MAJOR blown coverage on the Stuckey TD. We've been trotting out CFL caliber players for the last 4 years here, and yet again the team declined to spend money for help.
    C-

Linebackers were rock solid and their run blitzes were a big reason we held our own against the Jets' ground attack for the first 3 quarters. Cushing looked good.
    B+

The D-line managed to not puke all over themselves, but they were hardly making a difference either. Brick handled Mario solo most of the game, which makes it harder for anyone else to take advantage. Not many teams can do that to Williams.
    C-

Bush didn't make Sanchez his woman, but his run blitzes were effective early. Apparently, he needs to run tackling drills for the defensive backs all day until they quit trying to play two hand touch.
    C+

I really have liked Kubiak's tenure here. His vision has taken shape, and the team is far more capable than they ever could have been under Capers/Casserly. They're a respectable team. But it's time to take another step. It's time for the team to get some steel in their backs and win. I'm no longer confident that Kubiak can take the team there. The season needs to play out, but I wonder if this needs to be his final year.

come on - seriously: can we give kubiak half a year? that's all i ask. not a full season - let's see where the team is after week 8. not week 1 - week 8.

The coaching change debate will only get stronger as the season goes on. Judging from the play-calling, utilization of playmakers, offensive/def adjustments, preparation, and composure of this team, this is only natural.

Hell, I'm the first in line for a 12-4 season.

IN this league, it's distinct possibility, just not under these group of coaches.

Week 8 or week 1, I don't see Kubiak changing the way he coaches. He might just not be too good of a coach.

The Jets have multiple studs on the OL along with T Jones and Washington. You add a Rex Ryan defense to that and I see the Jets being pretty damn good. Baltimore also had a rookie QB last year.

That's what gets me most, how we could not be prepared when we had all preseason. We are gonna see what this team is made of next week. Titans will not be any easier on the road. Will this team respond? I hope so

Yeah, the Pats are probably the best team when it comes down to executing screen plays. They will screen the heck outta you.

Yeah the I saw about 3 screen plays blown up against the Jets, but going long isn't going to do anything against a heavy blitz. It puts your Oline in QB in a tough spot. A

We'll see, but I bet the Pats are going to make the Jets regret sending 7 guys to blitz, never done that once.

Good thing though is the Titans aren't going to do this, our offense will probably play much better against the Titans...but watch our defense is probably going to get destroyed by their running game.

Also I really don't want to hear how good the Jets are, a 9-11 win team? Isn't that what we're supposed to be, we just got spanked by one.

Not saying the season is over, but the playcalling and execution of this team really scares me right now.

The Jets are a much better team than everyone was giving them credit for, but absolutely no excuses for that performance. Got to win these types of games at home if we're going to make the playoffs.

Ready for the s**t to hit the fan after we start 0-2? That's probably what's going to happen. Kubiak better not let them lose focus after that.

as bad as they played - and they played horribly - what if slaton doesn't fumble?...

if they were able to score on that drive, and they had been moving it effectively finally, the complexion of the game changes dramatically. it's a lingering problem from last year, so i'm not quick to dismiss it - but that was such a *huge* turning point.

overall, i thought the run defense was very good until they wore down. they obviously have to get better on 3rd downs. offensively... well, i doubt they'll see another defense like that all year. they were all up in shannahan's head. of course, i say that, and they get tennessee on 10 days rest next.....

but, again - 8 games. they have 5-7 winnable games in their first 8. granted, today was one of 'em - but if they can go 5-3 at the break.......

I mentioned this after the Vikings game.

Please do something different against the Titans next week.

Slaton looks slow out there all of a sudden. That extra weight was not needed imo. Stunk up my fantasy team today

Cheer up, there is reason for optimism - Ric is not afraid of the Titan defense, nor should be the Texans.

Really man, tired of "if's" I want to hear about how after Slaton fumbled the ball, the team got things done and came back to AT LEAST make it a game.

Everyone is talking about how good the JEts are, that may be true. Then what does that make us? It doesn't make us good, we just got spanked by them, it makes us average again.

Last year was pretty much the same, we went up against better coaching, better teams...and this was the result, a big fat L. When we play the weak teams we come up with wins. We're just average right now until proven otherwise.
