http://blogs.chron.com/nfl/ First, I'd like to apologize to everyone who picked the Jets. I thought you were nuts. Obviously, I'm the one who was nuts. I'm an idiot. I never saw it coming. Considering the high expectattions, the way the Texans finished last year, the way they ranked third in offense, the way they had every starter back on offense and the way they made key additions on defense -- I think this was the worst performance in franchise history. I mean they were playing against a rookie quarterback with a defense missing its two best pass rushers because of suspensions. And yet the Texans came up as flat as the Reliant Stadium parking lot. They looked intimidated by Rex Ryan's team, the same way they looked intimidated by Ryan's Baltimore defense last season. Sanchez was outstanding. Washington and Washington State put up more of a fight in the Pac-10 than he got from the Texans' defense. The coaching was terrible. The playing was horrible. And to think that this game went to three-quarters of the country. No wonder the Texans should be the butt of jokes around the country this week. The only highlight from this game was John Busing's interception, and his fumble that Dominique Barber returned 48 yards for a touchdown that pulled the Texans within 17-7 early in the fourth quarter. For a brief moment, the fans got their hopes up, but the defense quickly doused that fire by letting the Jets go the distance. Thomas Jones' 38-yard touchdown run made it 24-7. I still can't believe what I just witnessed. The worst performance by a Texans offense I can remember. A defense that gave up three touchdowns and a field goal to a rookie quarterback starting his first game. Now the Texans have to go on the road to play the Titans. They're looking at an 0-2 start when 3-1 was expected. Anyway, congrats to those of you who picked the Jets. You were right on. And to those of us who actually thought the Texans would win, well, I don't know about you, but I'm hanging my head in shame. I'll try to do better from now on.
Maybe, just maybe this could be a wake up call to the Texans and we can come out firing next week. I hope we can turn this around before its too late. ITs only one game but a very bad game.
I picked the wrong week to stop drinking. And smoking weed. And snorting coke. And huffing glue. OK, I've never done....SOME of those things but this game made me wish I would. The worst game I've seen from the organization since the Browns game from a few years ago.
We'll see how good the coaches are next week. If we didnt learn some major lessons this week and make the proper adjustments for next week, then everyone needs to go.
you know..not even the texans broadcasting crew is saying that right now. Andre Ware just said (paraphrased): "you don't shake one like this off. a rookie qb...a rookie coach...on your home field? yeah, those are the ones you circle as wins. it's not easy to shake a loss like this off. i think this one sticks with them for a while."
While he's not exactly my ideal for a QB, I think Schaub is getting more than his fair share of the blame today. Look, going into this game it was IMPERATIVE for the Texans to run the ball in order to have a chance as you cannot win with Schaub throwing 30 or 40 times. Well, that didn't happen and this is the result. When I saw Schaub throw a 1 yd pass to pick up a 1st down, I knew they were in deep deep trouble. What I saw today was a defense that was well prepared to hit the Texans where they were weakest. Their DL manhandled the Texan OL - Myers was getting pimpslapped all day and the O-line as a whole got NO push on the Jets. No push, no holes to run through and suddenly your QB is a sitting duck. But they (Jets) didn't just stop there, they (correctly) surmised that Schaub is much less effective a thrower when he's backpedaling so they brought a lot of blitz heat to force him to do just that which resulted in all of those short incomplete passes in the 2nd half. When you can't run the ball, this is what you open yourself up to- it's just that simple. The Jets played 7 guys in the box and there was nothing the Texans could do to force them out of it. With no running game from Houston, the Jets were free to do what they pleased which was to go after the passer.
My breakdown: Shaub: Absolutely horrible. Off on his passes, held onto the ball way too long a couple times. He was pressured quite a bit but I don't know how many passes he through while falling back. Slaton: Worst game as a pro. There wasn't any running room at all for him and all the dump passes were absolutely blown up by the D. Another redzone opportunity blown by the fumble. WR/TE: With Schaub playing terrible and no running game, there's nothing they could do. OL: Absolutely abused. Did not pick up blitzes, hold their pass blocks, or run block at all. Jenkins had 2 plays where he threw Pitts and Meyers to the floor. This looked like the Texans old OL. DL: Same story. No pressure up the middle what so ever. Eventually worn down and gave up HUGE run plays at the end of the game. Mario played well but that's about it. LB: Probably the only brightside of the game (not saying a lot). Good to see Cushing out there, Ryans had a good game but the taunting was plain terrible. Keller's pointing at the scoreboard said it all. Secondary: I said the same thing a couple years back, we have the worst safeties in the league. Absolute horrible tackling, missed tackles, and how a TE blows by a CB is beyond me. Coaching: Out coached on every facet of the game IMO. Credit the Jets defense because they were all over the place, going on the road under a brand new scheme and shutting out is big. The number of completions and yards on 3rd downs by the Jets almost says it all. We were sending the blitz and they were throwing screens and unders all day long on us. Final Grade: F
You know the saying, teams aren't always going to win the games they are supposed to win. at least we got ours out of the way.
had we just lost, i'd be fine with that. i'd be disappointed...but it would be easier to buy. kinda hard to buy when you're dominated like this.
On top of all those factors, we didn't just lose... we got raped. Our only points came from our defense and we nearly turned the ball over after the INT.
It should. Too many times in their existence have they harped solely on the positive (the 8-8 seasons, the dwindling sacks allowed numbers, the big names on defense)... they have not once said to themselves "this is fools gold.... there are still holes, there are still problems, and we're not happy till we think those get solved." There has been a game like this every single year.... one that should have been a for-sure win, but it wasn't. Will this actually benefit the team more in the long run? Had they won, they probably would have stuck their collective chests out and roared... even though they would have simply beat a rookie QB at home. I want losses to stick. You learn more from losses like this than wins that you should have won.
