I'm not sure how concern for the greater good and willingness to make sacrifices, or for you comic book knobs: with great power comes great responsibility, equals envy. But that's just me.
You never understood that Green Lantern's light was green... with envy? It's understandable if you missed some of the original comics in that series.
Do you find that the left here shrinks from defending other leftist ideas or plans? I don't. Given this, I find it interesting they haven't taken up that mantle here.
I think most defend what they think are reasonable ideas. And hopefully they actually defend them rather than just parroting the party line. Nothing wrong with defending or arguing a point. It's good when we are able to understand an argument even when/if we don't agree with it.
Exactly, contrast the response to this from the left with the response to equally silly Wall proposal from the right.
our beloved Senator apparently hasn't yet received his copy of the Green New Deal memo: "'I am going to put my muscle behind this $10 million grant,' Schumer said." https://ithacavoice.com/2019/02/sen...BGsb_irts1UviiiIYbtMnPWq44zb7-RsXPWR7w2P8wqFE
I heard the first draft of the green new deal was just "Repeal and replace" typed over and over again in Courier
What leftist isn’t taking up the mantle of tackling climate change while leading the way with green jobs through innovation? The Green New Deal though is just a resolution. It’s not real law or a definitive plan with specific parameters. That’s why you haven’t heard lefty’s preach the GND as if it’s the end all be all. Just a good commitment to put in writing. Contrast that with the Wall where it’s a theoretical thing, costs a crap ton of money, and it’s just for a stupid racist point instead of something positive like economic innovation and you know... saving the planet.
No, that’s not quite right. He is just not an idiot. If you want super duper mooter Moore law rail, so be it. Laught and enjoy. But if you seriously think that mean it replaces air transport, the joke is on you also.
The actual details (none) both matter and doesn’t matter. The outrageous of it drive conversations. I do wonder for how long and to what extend.
Those who think she is trying to put together a package of reasonable ideas do not understand the game she is playing and what her goal is. I have been rather dismissive of AOC as a bit player who is over-playing a lucky hand gifted to her. But what she is doing here - with this 'Green New Deal" is very impressive on so many levels. And best part is that she knows it will never get passed and isn't even practical or based on science - and she doesn't care.
When you want $500,000 and ask for $700,000, negotiations will happen. If you ask for $2 million, they tell you to get *******, she's asking for $5 million, and even her own side is laughing at her. Asking for too much is a starting point for negotiations, but go too far, and you'll end up being rightfully mocked, which has now led her staff to pulling it from her own site. She did the equivalent of saying "we need to lower taxes" and then set a tax plan where everyone's tax rate is 0%, people just look at each other and then burst out laughing.
I agree with you here about her abilities to market what she's selling--that is indeed impressive. But as Jonah Goldberg argued in a piece yesterday, while the GND may not not be a very serious proposal, the worldview behind it is very dangerous. I think that's right.
She has a natural super ability to know exactly what it takes to reach her goal of socialism. (Fear drum beat). But she’s a joke and so logically it just won’t happen (but fear drum continue to beat). Funny logic aside. She’s will make plenty of mistakes and this is one of them, though not enough to derail her. The mistake here isn’t how outrageous her position is itself, but because the GND isn’t new, and in a way she’s hijacking it to her own tastes which could drive the very people (with good knowledge and understanding) behind the GND away. Alienating your own is pretty dumb, but what do I know.
here's why this may be a mistake: "The first major policy intervention from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the noted social-media personality and future dictator-for-life of the Americas (I believe she’s also a congresswoman of some sort), is a quite-extraordinary document: a blueprint for fighting climate change that manages to confirm every conservative critique of liberal environmental activism, every Republican suspicion of what global-warming alarm is really all about. "The core conservative suspicion is that when liberals talk about the dire threat of global warming, they’re actually seizing opportunistically on the issue to justify, well, #fullsocialism — the seizure of the economy’s commanding heights in order to implement the most left-wing possible agenda. "A conventional liberal, up until now, would dismiss that belief as simply paranoid, the product of Fox News feedback loops and the science-denying fever swamps. But the Green New Deal that Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Senator Edward Markey are sponsoring — and that four leading Democratic contenders for the presidency have already endorsed — responds by saying: Yes, that’s absolutely correct." https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/09/opinion/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-green-new-deal.html
