I'm betting Singleton gets another shot soon. Bigger question is what happens to Carter, as he's out of options. Unless they send Tucker down, they'll likely have to put Carter on waivers if they bring Singleton up. Or trade Carter, but his trade value is rather low right now. Luhnow is probably waiting for Carter to hit 4 home runs in a series and then puts him on the trade block. Problem is, that might not happen anytime soon.
Hopefully Springer's return will provide some lift. He seems so vital the chemistry in the clubhouse, even apart from his play. 2-6 in the past 8 won't cut it. I'm ecstatic with the split in LAA, but realistically we need to win a home series against the Giants. Wonder if Singleton will get a call up soon? He's been mashing. Gotta think his performance puts some heat on Gattis/Carter/the rest of our sub-200 hitters
Carter's first 124 PA in the last 3 seasons 2013 .207/.282/.405 51 K 11 BB (.309 BABIP) 6 HR 2014 .159/.266/.355 43 K 14 BB (.213 BABIP) 4 HR 2015 .147/.250/.294 48 K 14 BB (.196 BABIP) 5 HR He's been staggeringly consistent in his awfulness to start the last 3 seasons, the only difference is that he got a few more hits to fall in. It's so god damn frustrating to watch, but at this point you can't give up on him yet because it was about this time the last 2 seasons that his numbers started to spike. If Gattis and Carter don't start producing, you have to consider calling up Singleton and trying to find some AB's for all 3, but you can't just dump them for nothing...yet.
Agreed. This one must be frustrating for Luhnow, b/c I'm betting he got some nice offers for Carter over the offseason with the second half that Carter had last year. I'd be surprised if all three of those guys (Gattis, Carter and Singleton) are Astros come late July.
But at some point, you have to ask if "good" Carter is worth "bad" Carter. As monumentally disappointing as Singleton's rookie season was, it was still better than what Carter has produced thus far this year (or, by WAR, about even). I'd rather they let Singleton try and figure it out, frankly, especially now that they seemingly have Carter 2.0 in Gattis who, at least historically, has been more consistent.
2 years in a row Carter has been a very productive hitter for 75% of the season, he was just terrible in the 1st quarter. When that has happened what logical Gm would give up on the guy after another bad first quarter. Why would you assume this season would be different at this point And yes good Carter is worth bad Carter if he gets to his numbers by years end. Moving him right now would gets pennies on the dollar, and there's a good chance he would go off for whoever picks him up. For now the Astros have to bite the bullet and keep running him out there, although there is a point where he has to go.

I guess it comes down to how we'd choose to define "productive hitter." Looking at his month-to-month splits, he's posted a sub-.700 OPS in nearly 40% of his plate appearances (477) as an Astro. And if you take away his scorching two-month stretch last year, his remaining numbers as an Astro: .301/.417/.718. So to answer your question, I would hope a logical GM would see July/August '14 as the tremendous outlier it was and move on to plan B. Yeah, if I thought we'd see .340/.629/.969 with some degree of regularity, maybe you stick with him. But I think I'd much rather see if Singleton could deliver .301/.417/.718 (with the idea of it NOT being his ceiling) than wade through knee-deep garbage from Carter while holding out hope he'll give us another July/August from 2014.
We need some pitching reinforcements. Sadly, it doesn't seem like there is much going on in AAA. I guess I'll wait for McCullers and Appel.
I will never understand how Justin Maxwell has been unable to maintain a spot in the majors. Solid numbers, decent pop, and plus fielder yet multiple teams have simply given up on him.
anecdotally feels like it's a combo of: -way too often injured -inconsistent when healthy--too streaky for his skillset. Feels like he gets in big ruts where he has a ton of unproductive outs (K's, etc.) without the big pop to justify it during those times. Maybe you could say his defense would justify at those times...if he wasn't also hurt so often
