It sucks that we have dropped 3 in a row to 3 of the worst teams in the league and nobody seems to care. The coach, the owner, the GM. Not even the damn players
Welcome aboard! Would you like some complimentary champagne? The Fire McHale bandwagon will be departing shortly.
We have some of the most luxurious delights in the Fire Morey camp. Limited space and invitation only. Must have 5 rep bars minimum or best offer
Since the team has apparently completely given up on him, I would be for firing McHale if I had some idea of who his replacement would be. If it's just JB Bickerstaff sliding up into the HC role, I wouldn't be too excited. Like all sports, the NBA is a copycat league. So I would be for getting a smart guy* (preferably former player) and surround him with the best assistant coaching staff in the NBA. I think getting the best assistant coaching staff in the NBA should be Les/Morey's expressed goal. Les, throw some f'ing money out there on assistant coaches. I don't really know who that could be. Just spitballing, and obviously I have no idea if they would have any interest at all, but how about a staff that includes guys like D'Antoni, Mike Brown**, Rudy F___in T, or some guy overseas who's considered a great coach? Put a solid staff behind a guy like, say, Battier*** and I'll be a happy man. *How about Shaka Smart??? But no, he's not leaving UT yet, obviously. **I know, a lot of people think he's garbage, but I think he would excel in Houston in an assistant role. ***I doubt Battier has any interest in coaching. He doesn't really seem like the coaching type. But still, one can dream...
would like to hear your critique/input on my candidate for HC... http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=10122149&postcount=40
I have an opinion on that but as a disclaimer, I will say that my opinion is based on feelings/hunches/blind assumptions and as such it might just be a pile of crap. But, since you asked: I'm not super high on him because, and I don't know if this will sound bad or not and I'm sorry if it is a crappy thing to say.... but.... he doesn't come off as the greatest basketball mind. As a player? Awesome. As a head coach? Eh. Plus, IIRC, he's been open about wanting to be on the Rockets' staff for a while. That they continue to pass him up leads me to believe they don't think he would be a great coach and/or has some other issue. When it comes to former Rockets guards, I have long thought Sam Cassell could be a good coach. Loved his game and he always struck as a smart player who was able to get the most out of his abilities.
McHale is not a right coach to lead this team to a NBA title, but current team has more problems than the coach alone. Only Morey said this could win it all, but I do not think so, even players have questions in their mind. My impression is that Morey's approach sucks, even the players know it, they just can not speak it, so they just quit the team in order to get McHale fired. It may be a stupid theory, but it may have some material in it.
the fact that our front office has passed up elie more than once doesn't worry me, but mario having moved around from team to team is something worth looking into. as a basketball mind, i go back to his play on the court. he was the guy talking on defense, getting his teammates in the right spots. on offense he was the one passing up the contested 3, and driving in for the runner or dish off instead of forcing the issue. both in transition and the halfcourt he always positioned himself to provided spacing for teammates. in the lockerroom he was one of the team's backbones and at the same time a calming influence on the maxwell's and cassell's. all reasons he was one of rudy's favorite players. in interviews he comes across as articulate and confident. all this being said, there is a chance that what you say just may be right. but i wouldn't say any greater chance than the same being true for cassell, jb bickerstaff, etc. i guess we can never really know until we put the guy in that chair
Yeah I can't disagree with any of this. The most likely reason that I favor Cassell over Elie is that I'm just much more familiar with Cassell; I've just seen much more of Cassell than Elie.
i love sam as well, and would take him if we didn't hire elie. as charismatic motivators, i think they would both be very good. and both are cool, tough, and grounded under pressure in big games, which is when head coaches really earn their money. as rudy used to say, "i just feel that when you're in a heavy storm, the coach's job is to steer the ship and keep it on course" (paraphrased) but in terms of patience with our young guys, stressing efficiency on offense, and being a hard ass with our guys on defense, i would give the nod to mario
Too late. There's a reason that the sense of urgency is palpable. In the West, you don't have the luxury of waiting a half season, or a quarter season. It's clear as day that the team has no sense of direction. If the leadership won't come from within (and it hasn't with Harden, or Dwight), then they need someone to instill it from without. McHale hasn't instilled much of anything.
