having mchale as a coach is like being in a drag race and having the faster car but always having to give the other car lengths thus always having to work harder than you should to get the win.
I don't like McHale but I can't totally blame him tonight. The line up he sent out there to begin the 4th was garbage but Harden ****ed up down the stretch and they let Mavs score 120+. Not gonna win to many giving up that many.
I thought according to Morey the mid range long 2's are the most inefficient shot in basketball. Not if you got Monte and Dirk shooting them
fire him already please. terrible rotations, comes in with no prepared gameplan offensively OR defensively and doesnt even know how to draw up plays that involve movement for cutting or grtting a shooter open. Its time for him and his etch a sketch offense to take a walk.
Long-time lurker, back since Stevie Franchise's rookie year. every time i have joined a messageboard i tend to let it take up more time then I would like and I regret it. But since Rockets red is in the blood I felt like I had to finally register so I can chime in with a rant or thought after a game like tonight, which is going to undeniably ruin my mood for the next 12 hours or so (i know, i dont think it should either, not that serious). But I have to let one thing off my chest, and I haven't even read majority of this longgg thread obviously. But I really really feel (hope I'm wrong) that McHale will hold this team back long term. Forget just tonight. Or other games in this early season. Or even last year. YOU CAN GO BACK TO THE END OF THE 11-12 season, and see McHale led Rockets just coughing up games in the 4th. I'm sorry but you HAVE to start looking toward the coach. Down the wire, CONSISTENTLY since coming to Houston, other teams have out executed Rockets while McHale has been our coach. I mean our coach didn't even grasp the foul while up 3 concept until a few days ago. You can say "team needs to improve defense", yes. Or a better coach can be coaching better defense to this squad. What's frustrating is I know there is no chance McHale will be out as coach anytime soon, so I can only try to be optimistic. But it's getting tough. I was very very confused when he was hired in the first place and now I'm remembering why. He didn't do well in Minnesota and he is not going to get the maximum out of the players we have now. I'm sorry but this many replies to the thread has me thinking I'm not the only one that's very discouraged. on a side topic and i don't want anyone to bite my head off -- I sometimes have dreams of McHale being fired and JVG coming back. Surely he's not the only one who would be an upgrade (a MASSIVE one at that). But alas, that's only in my dreams and I usually wake up to the alarm clock...
carlisle changed up their D to a soft zone 2/3 thru the 3rd Q…….and instead of running more screens/cutters or planting a FT line high post, mchale just ran perimeter ISO for the next 16 minutes. our halfcourt sets are simply a joke. there is no way this team will be able to advance in the playoffs with a junior high level offense like this. relying on your players' athleticism and 1on1 ability to make something happen every time downcourt won't cut it. on the other end carlisle was successful in getting defenders to switch time and time again. how many consecutive times did you see beverley alone on dirk from 17ft? that's like a layup for him. you would think our coach would get the message after a few scores and bring a double to just force it out of dirk's hands. one other note….twice at the end howard got great offensive rebounds in traffic. and instead of passing it back out to run the clock (we had a lead to milk), he tried to go for the immediate dunk. he came up empty both times and howard was probably fouled but didn't get the call. but clearly the coaching staff didn't instruct the players to milk clock. that's why harden also tried to throw an alley-oop lob to a well-covered dwight with 23 seconds on the shot clock. it's all these little details that this team is missing, and the reason we've lost 3 games that we absolutely shouldn't have.
Very fair assessment. Not for firing him this season, and never for firing any coach mid-season. However I have very little doubt in my mind that even though Morey won't ever say they are planning this, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they part ways and try and move McHale to a management position. I think the players love him and really respect him so I'd really hate to see a sour parting of ways. Overall I think he's been a very good mentor if anything to a lot of these young guys. A lot of high caliber coaches will be chomping at the bit to get the Rockets position if they do in fact interview. Gonna be a tough call if they continue to disappoint, and blow so many games they have the talent to win night after night.
On this one, I'll cut Howard and McFail some slack. I think the Mavs' gameplan was to hack Dwight intentionally every time in the 4th. He hadn't missed up until the final quarter, so you can't blame Dallas for thinking they had a better shot at denying him points by sending him to the foul line. Amazingly he was on fire from there as well tonight. And they also figured that occasionally they'd get away with fouling him which turned out to be the case on at least a couple of possessions. So I figure Dwight decided what the hell, I'm gonna get hammered so I better go up strong and try to draw the foul. More often than not he did, but hindsight being 20/20, you can't help but wonder what would've happened had they milked a few of those offensive rebounds to burn another 24 seconds off the clock.
Changing everything mid season (especially with what Dwight went through last year) has the recipe for disaster. It could work out great, but its still very risky. I'm not going to ask the peanut gallery here to stop complaining till the summer but I will tell you this. The Rockets will do their due diligence this Spring to figure out who is the best person to lead the troops next year, and its a good possibility that won't be McHale. However, I am not an advocate for firing him already. I think that's a recipe for disaster in the lockeroom.
no use in firing him midseason. this roster is not championship caliber yet. they would still need an offseason to learn how to play defense with a new coach. just ride with mchale until the playoffs where the rockets will get exposed in front of everyone.
Coach McHale's clutch drawn up play. <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/mT5Y-gm7RPY?hl=en_US&version=3&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/mT5Y-gm7RPY?hl=en_US&version=3&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object> No creativity to end games. Just a prayer for the refs to call a foul.
It's not McHale's fault, it seems the players are giving 0 effort on defense, plus the Mavs were just shooting lights out in the 4th quarter, I think in the last 6 minutes they didn't miss a single shot, but you have to learn how to close out games.
