I played a little bit of lost planet last night and found it not really that awesome. Also I was disappointed with the Splinter Cell trailer because the graphics looked like regular xbox ones, same with Too Human, the ingame scenes looked kind of fake and jerky. Perhaps I'm jsut spoiled by the H3 trailer, which looked incredible in HD.
what? lost planet is sweet with all the cool special effects and bosses , plus u can get into the mech suit.
Here's some screens about Madden Wii: http://www.g-freaks.de/?sn_show_news=1797&cat=5 More at the link. I think those should have been in 16x9 though. Not saying these are fake, but that is a little odd.
I've never been much of a sports fan, or an action fighting game fan (in the Street Fighter vein), but the new technology in the Wii could really awaken some sports game love in me. If they really do this smart, and make the controls for these games as natural and intuitive as possible (using the motion sensor stuff)...man, it could definitely revolutionize multiplayer sports games.
That is what killed EQ for me too. It just stopped being fun, and required way too much time just to accomplish one thing. According to the FAQ's SOE won't affect the gameplay for Vangaurd at all. They claim that they will have even more freedom, and that is part of the reason for the switch.
hey look at this! cool http://news.com.com/2061-10797_3-6070729.html Nintendo Wii will come with Opera browser Nintendo's next-generation Wii video game console will feature the Opera browser, Opera Software announced on Wednesday. Wii users will browse the Internet using their consoles, navigating sites via the new Wii remote controller, a two-handed, motion-sensitive system that allows players to mimic actions on-screen with the movement of their hands.
Yeah, I'm surprised Nintendo didn't talk more about it at their press conference. All I remember was Iwata saying something like "...and browse the Internet on the Wii with the Opera web browser." And then they started talking about something completely different, making it easy to completely forget about that small detail. There are some pictures of the DS Opera version out there somewhere. I'll post them later if I can.
Very nice. Totally disagree about your XBOX findings, though, Sam. I could see the difference in the gameplay in Splinter Cell and Too Human; likewise Lost Planet's gameplay had a good feel to it. Man...Sony is catching hell all over. I guess we're going to find out just how fanboy the fanboys are. It takes some strong damage control to spin 600 bucks and a gimped 500 system into a positive. There's some good in there...but it is heavily outplayed by the bad. It's going to be funny watching all the people who get on MS and Nintendo as having 'brainwashed' fans....as they desperately try and cling to Sony after getting kicked in the nuts.
Splinter Cell was OK, although I see where Sam is coming from. I expected more from Ubisoft to be honest, and there are others who seemed to be a bit disappointed. I haven't had a chance to see Too Human yet, although it sounded like some people were also disappointed with that title as well (at least with what was shown on G4). Of course, maybe they saw it after watching the MGS4 and Halo 3 trailers. Also, http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents
Are they going to have any plans of having a 360 with the HD-DVD built in? I'd much prefer that over an external drive.
I don't know...maybe. There really isn't much info to go on in order to answer that question. I guess they could integrate into the xBOX THREE-sixty later on, kind of like how Sony had a built-in Ethernet port on the PStwo. Of course, if HD DVD doesn't take off... BTW, I checked out Too Human and wasn't really impressed with it either. The graphics were decent, but everything else was pretty bad (animation, framerate, collision detection, etc.). I had high hopes for that game too. Well, at least Mass Effect looks awesome.
Well what jumped out at me about Splinter Cell was that the textures, like the snow, ice and water in that sequence, seemed way too smooth and dumbed down to be realistic. Even the Perfect Dark Zero snow (which is the only 360 snow I've seen up close I guess; Edit: well Kameo had snow too but it was cartoony snow) looks much better. The trailer was probably not as high res as the H3 one though so that might explain a bit of the difference. Too Human didn't seem that much better looking than Ninja Gaiden Black to me. There was somethng wrong with the way the characters "fit" on the landscape, you know? It just looked kind of fake to me. Again, part of this is just the fact that I'm spoiled from the incredible H3 graphics, which are spposedly, no BS, fully in-engine, and Chief was apparently movable with same res & everything else in the brief demo they showed behind close doors from what I"ve read.
You guys can add me to the "Was really hyped about PS3 until I found out I'd have to donate body parts to be able to afford it" group. Looks like I'll be jumping on the Wii bandwagon (if it has Smash Bros, my son will jump with me), and I may pick up a PS3 if/when the price drops to compete with the 360. SOny may end up winning the war, but IMO they aren't going to see $600 consoles flying off the shelves anytime soon.
Sadly, I think they'll still sell out during launch. FWIW, like 10% of the initial 360 launch units were sold on eBay, and most of those were going for $800 on up IIRC. They won't sell 100+M consoles at that price, but I'm not sure if you’ll see stores packed with them later this year. They will need to price it more competitively eventually though. One thing I forgot about was that Sony should be able to cut costs on Cell and RSX shortly after launch (due to the migration to 65nm tech). Price cut for mid-2007? I wish.
I don't disagree. You will have a bunch of die hard Sony fanboys buying them, and you'll also have the "I gotta have that for Christmas" kids, who talk their parents into buying them. But in the long run, I also agree, sales will top out quickly at that price.
MGS4 looked all right, cool graphics, and I used to be a total MG freak, but I don't know if I'd be shelling out 600 plus just to play it. I maybe would if they released it a couple of years ago, but even though MGS 3 was in there in the middle, I can't get worked up about the storyline continuing from 2001 like I used too. Also the fact is that Splinter Cell has re-defined the stealth gameplay thing into somethng much more realistic in the interim by doing 3 games in the same span and working on a fourth. Plus, Raiden is too femme for me. I can't believe they brought him back even in a supporting role, must have been the japanese androgyn/manga thing.
Most people didn't seem to care for Raiden either...until they saw the trailer (especially the 15 minute trailer). I'm surprised you didn't get the same feeling. Some people almost want to play as Raiden instead of Snake after watching how Raiden handled the MGs. Not quite sure if I'd pay $600 for a PS3 based on MGS4 alone either, even though it has been the best thing about E3 so far (IMO). I would be tempted though, especially if the other major franchises came out around the same time (FF 13, GTAIV, Gran Turismo 5, etc.). I'd much prefer a price cut before then though.
I think Splinter Cell is better than MGS... It feels more real and I feel like I'm part of the game..but the story line for MGS is much better than SC
See I only saw the short one. I'm just harboring raiden hatred from 2001 with his childbearing hips and all. Kaiser Soze is right, S-Cell's story lines are pretty terrible, and seem to have gotten worse even though the gameplay just keeps getting better and more realistic. On the flip side, sometimes the MGS storylines veer too wildly into the realm of fiction even though they're generally pretty good. My favorite thing about MGS2 was the last sequence w/the battle on the roof of federal hall, and the street scenes from the wall street area, if only because I've been walking past that location on the way to the office since 1999. I also dug the anectdote about "Skyscraper Museum" (where Raiden met his gf) - The SS museum was a crappy, tiny half ground floor museum in an office building on the way to the seaport that nobody ever went to (it closed a few years back and is now a starbucks and a Hale & Hearty soups). I imagine to an out of towner like a japanese video game designer here to get video footage, it might seem like a significant cultural landmark, when it was really just a footnote that few NY'ers or even tourists had ever heard of. Anyway, just struck me (and probably only me) as hilarious that they would include a reference to it in the game.
