I was having trouble connecting to CFs and lost satellite reception for about 10 min. We're making Petit look like Haren.
Nicely done, Kepp. It seems like Pence would have much more success stealing bases but his career SB% is awful. There is no question he is fast so maybe he doesn't get a good jump or maybe he doesn't have great acceleration. Anybody have a clue?
He seems to have a slow burst if you ask me, but I don't get to see enough games to know. In ATL I sat in the 2nd row in RF and he didn't seem to have great burst. Michael Bourn on the other hand was a thing of beauty to watch run.
Another thought on Pence: After about 2 months of walking at a high rate to start the season, he suddenly went weeks on end barely ever walking. One possibility is that opposing pitchers were treating him differently. Another is that a coach or manager asked Hunter to try to be more aggressive since the power numbers weren't there early on. Maybe it's a combination of those things or something else entirely but I wouldn't be surprised to find out at some point in the future that Cooper urged him to try to slug the ball more. Cooper always seems to want players to be hyper aggressive, both hitters and pitchers. As a RFer, Hunter's power numbers weren't where you want them so maybe that wouldn't be so unreasonable for Cooper to ask him to do that if that is actually the case. At the same time, I'm not sure you want to mess with that kind of discipline. The power was likely to come around either way.
Another awful error from Miggy. He had one yesterday too where the ball just slipped out of his hand on a potential DP.
Miggy has looked tired recently, both at the plate and in the field. His OBP is now right around or below league average and he's committing some silly errors. If we resign him and move him to 3rd next season, he'd probably be an upgrade over Blum but he'd still likely be well below league average for that position. He is barely above league average for SSs (wOBA) right now despite the ton of hits. The problem is he barely ever walks and his power numbers aren't overwhelming enough to compensate for that fact. He is also unlikely to repeat his performance next year given his age. For the right price, it may make sense but if we don't upgrade our pitching, I say we save the money and let any young guys fill the spot. Spend more money on draft picks and scouting or something until we have more talent in the pipeline and look more like legit contenders.
Pence can put his stamp on the game right here... Wow, his numbers are awful with the bases loaded, both this season and for his career.
Pence is now 0-for-11 with 6 Ks this season with the bases loaded. He's somewehre near .200 for his career.
Lead of single by bourn, then a single with him on second, and bases get loaded with one out, and yet no runs. That sucks. Berkman though is making up for such a crappy April. The HR, R, and RBIs will be down because of the injury, but we will look at the end of the year and it will look like a typical Berkman year.
7 strong out of Oswalt is huge. Last few starts he has really struggled through the 6th inning like he was doing early in the season.
