I would be shocked if Kubes left and Smith stayed, if anything I thought it would be the other way around. I will say this, I will wait to see who Smith brings in before killing the move but it better be an experienced proven winner type because if it is just someone with Denver ties then....*sigh*
if this is true, then I sincerely thank the Titans and Broncos for putting the nail in Kubiak's coffin
Reading that Smith may be retained just made me sick to my stomach. That makes absolutely no sense. The Texans need solid free agent signings and this guy has no clue how to make that happen.
At this point, I wouldn't put it past McNair to turn a bad situation into a worse one. Are our options really to keep the status quo or go with an equally mediocre alternative? Really? Maybe McNair has heard our cries but doesn't realize that we want Kubiak gone just to get rid of him. We want him gone so that we can get BETTER, a concept that McNair inexplicably doesn't seem to grasp. And yes, I know I'm getting upset about rumor and conjecture, but it's par for the course with this team.
To me, the nightmare scenario is Smith staying and a guy like Ron Rivera getting the job. An unproven coordinator being asked to cut his teeth as a head coach in a situation where the personnel side is not very good. It could work, but it is such a waste. Maybe McNair would do the old Casserly/Capers gig and bring in Cowher to really run the team with Smith as the figure head GM until after the draft.
my sentiments exaclty. i have absolutely zero faith in mcnair et al to make the right decision. the fans are DYING to see a proven winner somewhere on the sidelines, but bob is far too conservative and loyal to his guys to make the obvious move here. instead he'll play it safe and we'll be the ones that get to suffer from it. so. incredibly. frustrating.
Actually I don't think Ron Rivera would be the end of the world at all. He has had success with the 3-4 and 4-3 in San Diego and Chicago. Now as to being a head coach I don't know but hopefully it would turn out to be more like Mike Smith in Atlanta. Smith, however, is another matter. I think if Kubiak goes then Rick should follow. He really botched the whole Dunta Robinson deal, whether he was going to re-sign or not, he took the option of F-tagging him again off the table and let him walk, and the plan after that was to take one rookie corner in the draft and nothing else. And that was to a secondary already in need of help. We should at least get a good compensatory pick this draft though, I hope. Now, he has done a good job of finding street free agents and not burdening the team with huge new/bad contracts. I would also point out that after he was hired he was asked about the previous draft where he strongly suggested he would have taken Reggie Bush, I know a lot were on that bandwagon including myself but clearly Mario was the right choice and that came straight from Kubiak. I think Schaub was Kubiak too.
EXACTLY. This is exactly what we should all be hoping for. McNair trying to save a little face again by not firing BOTH the GM and the HC at the same time. Hopefully they're both as good as gone.
The optimist in me wonders if it's already a done (handshake) deal... But the optimist in me has been burned by this franchise more times than I care to remember.
sherman. is there any doubt? it's the safe, predictable, banal, conservative move... which is the Texans modus operandi. smith will be retained, sherman will be hired, and our marketing slogan for the foreseeable future becomes: "Houston Texans - We're Just Here"
The "Maybe McNair would do the old Casserly/Capers gig and bring in Cowher to really run the team with Smith as the figure head GM until after the draft." scenario
Well, we could do worse. As far as "non sexy" hires go, it'd be OK. He did well in Green Bay other than his last year and he's gotten A&M back on the right track. It wouldn't be the ideal hire. It wouldn't be a horrible one either. It'd be mediocre, which means it definitely fits with the Texans philosophy.
This should be the slogan for the entire existence of the Texans. HOUSTON TEXANS: eh, we could do worse.
