Agreed! And that should include everyone in the personnel department who has been here from the start. There is NO justification for keeping anyone from the C&C Idiot Factory. It's time for Bob to do what he should have done 10 years ago: build a solid football operation.
No to Sherman, and in my opinion, no to the Tuna. I have to agree with everyone else that Sherman is just too close to the current regime. It's a move that senile old Bob would pull though. In my opinion, you have to go with the top choices out there. You have to do a Cowher, Gruden, or even reduce yourself down to a Billick (if he can bring in top notch coordinators). Otherwise, you just perpetuate your reputation as the laughing stock of the league, and you keep having the inability to sign top free agents. As far as Parcells, I just say no because of his lack of staying with a team for very long lately.
Sherman would be the most underwhelming hire McNair could make outside of keeping Kubiak, which is EXACTLY why I think he's going to do it. The man simply does NOT like taking risks, and shaking things up. He's about as vanilla and conservative as they come, and what better way to "appease the fans" and still maintain that level of comfort than bringing in someone who has already been a part of your franchise? I simply do NOT understand why this franchise CONTINUES to operate under this shroud of fear. What exactly have they DONE in the past 9 years to lend any credence to the way they have been doing things?? NOTHING has worked the way you wanted it to, Bob! Stop being so damned scared of your own shadow, go out there, and do a REAL coaching search.
Not that McClain's track record is worth dirt, but he's now saying he does expect the entire coaching staff to be released Monday, Rick Smith to be retained....but expects McNair to keep the purse strings tight in the new head coach budget - no Cowher, Gruden, Parcells. My biggest nightmare would be Dick Jauron. If they do something like that, I may very well wash my hands of this team and quit going to the games after 9 years of ineptitude. One of the top revenue franchises in the world....and McNair is acting as miserly as Ralph Wilson.
For as much flak as Kubiak is taking (and I want him gone), I would rather have him than a lot of other people. I would rather have Kubiak than Mike Sherman. Any day of the week. If it is down to Mike Sherman, keep Kubiak and hire someone that knows what they're doing on defense for Christ's sake. But please, hire Cowher, Gruden, or Billick.
That's funny, this time last week he was saying Kubiak would be retained. McClain, Justice, Soloman....I'm telling you....Houston sports media may as well just be monkeys throwing darts at a dartboard. All they try to do is guess right so later they can say 'I told you so'. Someone wake me up when we hear something from Mark Berman.
If that happens I swear to God I will not watch a single game next season unless they make the playoffs.
LanceZierlein The word on the agent grapevine is that Rick Smith will remain as GM and be in charge of hiring a new head coach for the Texans
To be fair, Kubiak wasn't a vanilla/conservative hire. He was a hotshot coordinator at the time that people thought really highly of.
I don't know how to feel about it. I don't think I trust Smith's evaluation of players, especially after the Kareem Jackson debacle. I doubt I can trust his evaluation of coaches... There goes the chance to hire Cowher and bring in "his guys."
Eh... Kubiak hadn't interviewed for jobs in years if memory serves correctly. He was definitely not a "hot shot" coordinator as no one in the league new for sure how much of the offense was on him. Edit: But I did think highly of him and thought it was a good hire, but it was definitely a "vanilla" hire. Low key personality, not a hot name in the coaching carousel, and told Bob what he wanted to hear about David Carr.
Unbelievable. I guess I'll hold my breath and hope for a good hire. I just don't see it. Uh. So frustrating. I just can't see the logic behind this. The only really bang up draft in Texans history was the one that Smith wasn't a part of.
"We'd like to welcome Mike Sherman as the new head coach of the Fightin' Texas Ag errr Houston Texans!" ... "With the 6th pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Houston Texans select Von Miller, Defensive End, Texas A&M" Spoiler
I think the best we can hope for is Smith and his staff do the 2011 draft (hell, McNair has already paid them for their services, might as well use them I guess) and leave immediately thereafter to make way for the Cowher clan, a la Casserly circa 2006.
