There are already more tickets sold to the "glorified HS game" on Saturday than than there were fans at the nationally broadcasted college game last night.
Meh. 2 Texas teams on a Saturday vs. 1 local team on a Thursday? UH-Rice drew 34K. The BOPW drew 24K last year. Part of the big deal about the grass was playing Saturday games before Sunday home games. Maybe they thought that since the game was on Thursday and that they were using turf on Saturday that it wasn't a big deal. I kind of doubt that they did it because they'd already painted the turf. They could do that between the UH game and BOPW game. They still have to paint the grass for the Texans game.
Seriously, can we just put in field turf and be done with it? What is the point of having grass if: 1) It's the worst grass in the NFL 2) The roof is never open anyway
1) SHSU vs SFA is owned by LSSE this year and as such has their full backing in terms of marketing. (UH vs Rice had this same advantage as well) 2) SHSU vs SFA has been scheduled for several months (years?) in advance. UH vs USF was scheduled only a couple months ago. 3) Halloween night with a 6PM kickoff on a weekday (I could not attend) vs. Saturday 4) Flash flooding all day vs. what looks to be awesome weather 5) The one chance for Houston area fans of SHSU/SFA to see their team all year 6) Transitional year for UH stadium-wise has hurt attendance across the board 7) Game on major network vs. game barely available on TV There's a ton of other factors involved here, but the main point is that no one should be surprised that SHSU/SFA will outdraw USF/UH this week. No one. Including the super-UH-alumni-homer-fanboy you're currently speaking to. I doubt the Texans wanted UH/USF to play on their home grass unless absolutely necessary. I'm willing to bet that the field turf for that game was prepared well before UH/USF kicked off. Otherwise it was really stupid to not roll out the blank turf and let UH/USF romp on that then paint it today for the BOPW tomorrow. Reliant's field situation has always been god awful. This won't help matters
Glorified HS game? I get that nobody but alums are really interested in this game, but we're not talking about D2 or D3 schools here. This game sells out the lower bowl which is more than UH does for most games at Reliant. Let's also not forget that UH has won conference twice in the last 20 years and only has one top 25 finish while we're demoting SHSU/SFA to high school caliber.

As the CF resident synthetic turf expert (please stop calling it "field turf". That is a brand...as is "Astroturf".), synthetic turf paints are made to be easily removable. That wouldn't be the reason why they didn't use it last night. My best guesses are... 1. They figured with nearly 72 hours between games, the grass would have enough time to recover. or 2. The contract to play at Reliant for UH stipulates that they play on natural grass. I would have had the UH game on the synthetic, too. Just makes sense to get more use out of it and leave that stupid tray system for the Texans in as good of shape as possible. I completely agree. But, please, do not use the other fields in the NFL as reasons against. Some of them are just bad (Seattle, for example, has a field that is the biggest joke in the industry.)

I heard from a pretty reliable source that the reason they didn't use the artificial turf is because it was raining so hard that morning and afternoon that they opted to bring the grass inside Reliant.
I was using hyperbole. Bottom line is that our grass sucks. Synthetic turf would look so much better and be easier to maintain.
