Ugh! ... We are going to have to have better defense than we had tonight if we expect to win. Not to mention Roy is going to obviously have to pitch better even if he has to go up against some rough calls. Go get em Andy ... We can't get off to a terrible start as we need confidence in a bad bad way.
Interesting tidbit... its no longer the Landry's Crawford Boxes.... its now the Randall's Crawford Boxes. I guess they also took away their video screen and advertising in LF as well (didn't notice that when I was watching, but I guess it is gone).
Astros could of won this game but Bagwell and Ensberg were not clutch and morgan's defense today was bad. Hopefully they win tommarow since Marquis is pitching. He has letdowns and maybe tommarow he will.
Un-freaking-believable! I cannot believe Garner did not pinch-hit for Adam Everett (with Lamb). That was a no-brainer and Dierk confirmed what I felt should be the next move. Dierk flat implied that Garner was wrong and before he could finish his sentence Adam grounded out weakly to short. Sometimes, this hunch thing Garner applies to his job can be mind boggling. I take everything back if it happens to be that Mike Lamb was out of the game due to injury.
Yeah those are all good, just as long as will is the leadoff man and ensberg is no where near cleanup. Lane and Scott will produce and roy just had a bad night.
My guess is Garner doesn't want to have confidence issues in Adam Everett this early in the season. Adam is going to be a vital bat in this lineup, no matter where he's going to eventually be batting, and to pinch-hit for him on the first day of the season could be one of those confidence-shattering moves. Larry also said that the move was probably a good non-call. I was 50/50 about it... and you know that I like Lamb, and I thought he should have really tried to make this team as an OF'er, so he could be an everyday player.
I think the real problem is Garner has set Everett up to fail as a leadoff hitter, but at the same time he has to show confidence and give him a fair chance, which could mean a few games to a few weeks. If Taveras keeps hitting, it should make the decision easier. I
Season's over. Pack it in. Don't bother showing up tomorrow. I'm not watching another game. The Astros suck. I can't believe that they're 0-1. No chance they win any of the 161 games left. FIRE VAN GUNDY!!!!!!!!!!!!AAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! There. That should take care of it for the rest of you. I know you guys are venting or whatever. Is it not possible that some of the younger guys were a tad nervous? It's opening day. Mistakes might be made. Can't you people just be happy that baseball is back?
I don't know where you're getting this. I was at the game tonight and they still had the Landry's signs and video screen. In fact, the guy next to me joked that Fertitta needs to either stop buying restaurants or get a bigger sign. Also, the PA announcer made an announcement about balls hit into the Landry's Crawford Boxes are good for a gift certificate at Landry's Restaurants.
To many anti-bandwagoner posts - it is like a bandwagon for anti-bandwagoners. Once Berkman gets back, the lineup will look a lot different. Tavares at the top of the order within 2 weeks is my guess, I just think Everett is better suited in the 7-8 hole.
The team made a good last effort tonight. I wish they played with more urgency earlier in the game. In any case, Im still excited about the season and once we get a couple games under our belts, I think the young guys will settle down a bit and play like they are capable of playing. Should be a fun year.
Agreed... the effort was definitely there. So much gets magnified in these first games because a.) Its the opening series... and b.)Its against the Cardinals. Frankly, I think MLB scheduling the two LCS re-matches as the opening series on both sides was kinda stupid.... these first few games are always about re-finding the routines, and getting back in the flow... and there's not enough buildup to the games as there could be in a few weeks (even though ESPN will try and shove everything Bos-NY down our throats). Anyways, back to the 'Stros... Oswalt was clearly effected by the ump, and it cost him. He'll have to learn from that and move on. The lineup had some pretty good at bats as the game went on... and they did a decent job at laying off some tough pitches, and not striking out as much. Some tinkering is warranted, as I don't know if Everett can handle the pressure of leadoff (but I'm not saying Taveras should be vaulted right up there either... I just don't think Adam can handle it, and eventually him and Craig should be flip-flopped back).
