After he didn't get some borderline calls against Shumacher, now he's all over the place and in danger of having to face Pujols with people on the basepath.

How is it possible that a below avg to avg pitcher in his whole darn career but teams up with LaRussa and Duncan to become a front end on the rotation guy??? Baseball incredible!

    DEKE!

On average, teams score about 1.5 runs with men on 1st and 2nd and no outs.

Clearly they have a method... mostly relying on sinking/2-seam stuff constantly to the outside corner, mixed in with one quality breaking pitch.

If you can do both of those things.... regardless of whether or not you're a flamethrower... you can pitch for them (and will likely have some success).

Its also something that starts at the minor league level, and transcends upwards.... meaning that when they do make the big leagues, they've already instilled most of the basic training that they'll build upon.

LaRussa has thrown some arms out over the years... but he's also the inventor of "bullpen specialists" in order to save those arms from constantly having to pitch complete games... so that's sorta evened it out.

Great explanation...Duncan is an awesome pitching coach and like you said LaRussa has developed a great strategy with his pitching staffs. Hey I remember how they turned Weaver around and then he left and went right back to being a below avg pitcher.

You know you're a good pitching coach... when you weren't ever even a pitcher!

Dave Duncan was a catcher back in his playing days... but boy does he know how to handle a staff. Just like Ausmus could easily be a pitching coach in today's game as well.
