See and I think that is where I disagree, respectfully, because I think the Phillies and Dodgers feel they are the teams to beat and need Halladay to put them over the top. I think Drayton wont make that commitment especially since it will turn into a bidding war. We dont need another ACE I believe just a solid three we already have a dynamic 1-2...NOT SAYING I WONT TAKE HIM LOL :D

Still in 3rd on % points but tied with the Cards in the loss column.

i'm not sure what there is to disagree with...i'm just saying, theoretically, if wade said "you can pick and choose anything and everything you want in our farm system", my hunch is that that would fetch halladay over any realistic offer that the phillies or dodgers would make.

So now the question would turn to.....do you sacrifice a few years trying to rebuild the farm system again for 1 and half years of a dominant starter?

You could be right, cardpire, but let's say the Dodgers, for example, were willing to give up their top 3 or 4 prospects, reasoning that they have enough depth to be happy with acquiring a proven talent like Halladay while still having other up and coming talent.

Hypothetically, if the Astros were going to get in on the bidding war for Halladay or Cliff Lee, it would be in the hands of all the other teams we we were bidding against as to how it played out.

The fact that teams like the Dodgers and Phillies have more depth actually makes me think they should be more willing to give up top talent, even if their top talent is better than our top talent.

i've repeated this in threads a few times now, but if the question was cut and dry just like you put it, my answer would still be yes, i'd be willing to sacrifice 2 years of the farm system for 1.5 of halladay, taking NOTHING else into consideration.

to briefly recap all the other considerations though: 1) you can extend halladay, 2) you can re-trade him and recoup some if not all of your minor league losses, and receive players who are potentially better than the ones we gave up in the first place, and 3) you offer him arbitration after next year and pick up draft pick if he declines.

basically the only think lost by trading for halladay is drayton's money.

Not to nitpick but we wouldn't have to rebuild again since we haven't come close to rebuilding in the first place. We've reportedly had a couple of good drafts but it's still way too early to say we've replenished the farm system. We probably need at least another 2 solid drafts to get to that point.

As far as giving up the best of what we have for Halladay, if that was even possible, I'd probably do it if we could lock him up for 2011 and 12.

Good point so I guess it would restart the process. I dont think whoever trades for him will be able sign him since he wants to test the waters. Il contend we dont need a one or two we need a consistent three for us to be in a good spot.

you may be right too, i guess i'm just basing my thoughts on gauging the market the past couple weeks and hearing teams not being willing to part with a ton. who the hell knows though.

a few days ago, there was talk that the bluejays wanted the trading team to take back vernon wells in return. now, i know that drayton isn't cut-throat enough to do this and in the process rip the hearts right out of a ton of fans, and i dont want to sound like one of the idiots who proposes dumb trades on the rockets forums, but, what if sending pence there and taking back wells was added to our package?
