FWIW, Chad Qualls has given up 1 hit and 0 runs in 4.1 innings with a save for the D-Backs so far this season.
It is early but hummm, the two pitchers we thought that we wouldn't have to worry about were Oswalt and Valverde and they seem to have struggled the most.
Did you see Lidge earlier today? He got a save his usual style. Came in with a 3 run lead, got two quick outs (one on a near-HR). Then loaded the bases, threw a couple of wild pitches, and got a fortunate strikeout to end it after giving up 1 run. I like Lidge, but I'm not sure he's going to make it through the season - especially with that Philly fanbase.
There is nothing in the rule book preventing the official scorer from giving the win to a pitcher other than Valverde. I wish the scorers would do that more often.
Wooooo, we won! And we did it HOUSTON style The hard way lol Surely that's insane that Valverde gets the win!
I know it is very early, but I never thought that Wandy would have an ERA of 2.92 after 2 starts. I also never thought that Roy would have an ERA of 6.00 after two starts.
Gotta love the enthusiasm of Miggy rounding the bases. That guy loves to play baseball and loves to win. Hopefully that carries over in the clubhouse and prevents guys from "just showing up". Valverde is horrible right now, and just like Lidge before him, his mechanics seem out of whack. Flying open and leaving the fastball up in the zone---or maybe he was just too amped in the 9th inning in front of the home crowd. Either way it needs to be addressed ASAP before the media (and the fans) get in his head like we saw with Lidge.
Shoot, even Brocail in this case. I can only recall them doing it once for an Astros pitcher and it was a Twins official scorer that did it. I assume too much homerism could be involved and that is why the scorer's don't do it. They should simply put the "W" on hold and let MLB review their decision to award the win to the more deserving pitcher.
