Can someone please tell me how Ohio State is #1 over USF? USF has beaten #9 West Virginia and #18 Auburn, while Ohio State has beaten... recently unranked Purdue.
Human polls and bias. Same reason USC fell to only 10 for losing to Stanford, while Michigan dropped entirely out of the top 25 after losing to App. State. Too many voters play the hypothetical game of what they think would happen in a given scenario, instead of judging by the actual evidence they have.
Pretty much all the major confrences (SEC, Big 12, ACC, Big East) would entertain talks regarding a playoff. Meaning they could come to an agreement provided the right deal was there. The Big 10, paticularly thier Commisioner, has said no. They threatend that they would not join and muscle the Pac 10 into not going along as well because of thier exclusivity with the Rose Bowl. Yahoo sports wrote a nice piece on it. Don;t feel like googling it though.
Ohio State is a bigger name. People are still skeptical of USF. Plus they started the season ranked 10th in the coaches poll and 11th in the AP while USF was unranked. So they're kind of getting the nod by default. Every team that was initially ranked ahead of them has fallen but they haven't. That said, Go Bulls!!!
I think this is the article you are looking for. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=jo-delany010507&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
If the NCAA called their bluff, the Big 10 (and Pac 10) would lose in a route. I realize the Big 10/Pac 10/Rose Bowl bond is very strong but the pressure on them would be enormous.
or why ou is ranked ahead of lsu, even though ou got beat by an unranked colorado while lsu lost to a top 15 team.
And why is USC in the top 10 when they had the second largest upset ever. If michigan had to drop from 5 to out of the top 25 why the hell did USC only drop from 1 to 10. The whole system sucks.
Which is why I like the NFL over college football. This is a great year in the college ranks but the BCS lunacy rains on the parade.
How in the F is Arizona State number 8?! They have had the weakest schedule thus far no doubt and they're supposed to be undefeated. Their toughest opponent to date has probably been Colorado which pretty much explains their weak ass schedule so far. They have beaten 0 top 25 teams and squeeked by a Washington State team that got murdered by the DUCKS this weekend. Oh well, we will see how they play against Cal and then get slaughtered in Eugene. I'll also predict an upset with Rutgers taking down South Florida next weekend.
I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, every single college game has HUGE implications, the atmosphere is incredible, I'm not sure it would be the same if teams could go into games thinking they can lose and still make the playoffs and contend for the championship. On the other hand, it sucks not having a clear champion, and BC vs USF in the natl title game will be ridiculous.
really good article from Wetzel (written before the BCS rankings release today) http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;...205nYcB?slug=dw-bcs101307&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
BC is #3 in the BCS poll. I am not panicking. South Florida should lose the Rutgers next week. Go BC!!!!!!!!!! Matt Ryan for Heisman.
I'm hoping for whatever kills the BCS the fastest. If they did go to a playoff system, would they have to rename the divisions again (FBS/FCS)?
There should be an 8 game playoff: The 6 BCS conference champions plus two invitees. On your first point, wouldn't you like it if there were better non-conference games each and every year? As it is, because "every single college game has HUGE implications" the major powers are reluctant to schedule each other. This reduces the number of marquee matchups during the year because teams are so scared of losing. Teams "thinking they can lose and still make the playoffs and contend for the championship" wouldn't make them compete any less hard. Is that your concern? If not what is? What if UT removed pathetic Rice or Arkansas State from their schedule and played LSU or Tennessee instead? What if every major power dropped one non-conference twinky from their schedule and replaced it with another major power? That would be a good thing without any downside. On your second point: Not having a true championship playoff is the heart of the matter. I'll barf if Ohio State plays in the BCS title game without having one single quality win along the way. I normally like them but right now I'm dead set again them.
