Everything was pointing to him being a star except for his first season numbers. However, he's about the same age as Bregman when he got drafted so he has a lot of room to mature and get stronger.
Also, he was drafted directly out of HS. When he was first called up (Summer 2018) was around the time he'd have been drafted had he gone to college. Sure, some figure it out even younger, but it was still premature to write him off after 2018-19. Bregman had similar numbers in a similar number of at bats to start his career, as commonly noted.
