Truth is both sucked last year and both contributed to having a suck a** lineup last year. Hopefully one or both improve and if they dont that they're replaced.
Meyers was the 13th most valuable CF in baseball last season. He might not have met some people’s definition of “good”, but he didn’t “suck”, at least by any reasonable definition of the word. McCormick was below replacement level and one of the 5 worst everyday players in the league last season. He easily met the bar for “sucked”.
Hopefully he keeps this up, I'll believe it's real when he's able to hit 98 plus on the middle in part of the plate. He'll never be able that kind of gas on the outer part of the plate.
Meyers was unplayable in the playoffs. I dont care what the analytics say, that's the definition of sucking. He cant hit top tier pitching which is why I've said he's a 4th OF on a championship level team or a starter on a team that sucks.
I turned old early in life. I didn't make it out of my forties before major health issues began and I just keep surviving when I shouldn't. If I listed all my close calls you'd think I was a fiction writer and a very bad one because it wouldn't be believable.
Assuming MacTaggert is writing from an informed perspective, the roster is pretty much set: https://www.mlb.com/astros/news/ben-gamel-jalen-beeks-released-by-astros LF Altuve 3B Paredes DH Alvarez 1B Walker C Diaz RF Dezenzo 2B Rodgers SS Pena CF Meyers Bench: Dubon, McCormick, Caratini, Singleton Next in line: Hummel Rotation: Framber, Brown, Arrighetti, Blanco, Wesneski Bullpen: Hader, Abreu, King, Okert, Scott, Montero, Contreras, VanWey Next in line: Gusto Real questions in the bottom half of the lineup and bullpen depth, but also a lot of upside.
Sorry to hear that. Hope you can hang in there for many more years. Hope we can both see a trifecta of Houston championships.
Smith has to be on the opening day roster to gain a ppi pick for finishing top 3 in ROY voting, right?
On Whitley, it sounds like he's not *really* hurt, they just want to keep him in Florida for extra workouts. Don't tell the league office.
Damn I sure would take my chances with Dana making that pick Surprising also cause Dana hasn’t been shy about moving players quickly, and Cam certainly looks the part Hope it isn’t gonna be a service time manipulating BS issue
The article says they wont keep Smith if he doesn’t have a starting spot, and Paredes / Dezenzo seem set at 3B and RF. Which is probably true. But I’m still holding out hope that it’s Smith at 3B and Paredes at 2B. Keep Rodgers or Singleton as a backup, whichever.
Paredes hasn’t played an inning at 2B this spring that I know of, so I can’t imagine him playing 2B on Thursday If Dana really thinks this team is too good and too deep for Cam Smith to be an everyday player on, I hope he is right, cause that would be a hell of a team
Gamel and Guillorme getting sent out says pretty clearly Brown isn' t interested in "we could do worse" options right now. He would rather take the chance on guys who could really matter, but come with some risk. Only reason a guy like Meyers is safe is because we have so few options and our current corner outfield options really need to lean on his particular skill.
I think you’re right, I’m just disappointed if Cam doesn’t break camp with the team at this point. Got our hopes up!
