Bolton is likely gonna just be an opener today so it will probably be a bullpen game. Arrighetti probably won't be available to start until Wednesday, Colton Gordon should be available tomorrow. Burrows today on regular rest if they want to go that route but he probably starts game 2. Game 3 would be Javiers spot. So we've got like 4 starting options after a bullpen game. How game 2 and 3 goes will effect how the rotation sets up coming back from the day off, so it's a lot of moving parts.
Next man up because it was probably his day to start at Sugarland. The Hunter Brown injury shifts things. They were about to go to a 6man rotation so my guess is they haven't made decisions where they are inserting guys for that. TBD just means they haven't announced the series rotation. That usually gets ironed out midday of the first day of a series. I would guess it will be Burrow on Tuesday .Wednesday is probably more of a tossup. That would be Javier day but they may not keep him in that spot with his recent outings. There is also the 6th man factor here too. I am not sure what Arrighetti's regular rotation day is but if it is Tuesday or Wednesday he may get inserted there.
Nearly forgot about Arrighetti. He still has plenty to prove but his return gives hope and shows Astros have bullets for reload. Two non-catches ruined the A's series but an L beats a sweep by alot. A sweep this series would balance it.
My guess is it’ll be Burrows and Javier in the other 2 games since Houston has an off day after that. Then they’ll call up Arrighetti to be SP6. Today will probably be hoping to get 6ip combined out of Bolton and Weiss. Teng is also available. Basically whichever one of those 3 pitches the best probably gets Brown’s rotation spot until he comes back. I would like them to DFA Munoz and replace him with another multi-inning option in Lambert but lack of options might prevent that. De Los Santos should also be back later this week. Assuming Hader and Brown won’t be back until the 1st week of May my pitching staff for April would be: SP: Weiss, Burrows, Javier, Imai, McCullers, Arrighetti RP: King, Okert, Blubaugh, Abreu, De Los Santos, Bolton, Teng Blubaugh and Teng are optionable bullpen arms who could rotate in with Gordon, Alexander, Roa, and Murray to keep at least one fresh arm in the pen at all times.
Arrighetti pitched Friday, so he doesn't have any ability to come back and pitch before Wednesday- which would be Javier's spot. Just go bullpen, Burrows, Javier, off day, Imai, LMJ, Arrighetti. If you wait until Sunday to call him up he's gone a little long in between starts but that puts him down for 18 days. 172 is required for full service. Schedule is 187 days. That means he has to be down for 15 days- being down 18 gives us a little wiggle room in case we have stuff that messes with that schedule. If Arrighetti is called up before Sunday that's a massive org failure. In 2024 he got a full year of service time by 1 day. They cannot allow that to happen again when they are this close. Just dumbass job by Dana in 2024 allowing that to happen- in the same way apparently that we were less than $1M into the tax line in 2025. Have to pay attention to basic blocking and tackling man.
They weren't. The ~$1MM was the amount of tax they owed - they were ~$3.5MM over. 2025 Houston Astros 2025 Luxury Tax Payroll https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.c...g-nine-teams-pay-record-4026m-in-luxury-taxes
Javier in Colorado scares the hell out of me. In a vacuum, I prefer Arrighetti there, maybe even Alexander or Gordon over Javier who needs to pitch in pitchers parks, or at least those that don't punish hard hit fly balls Ideally, I wish they had scratched Ullola Sunday and brought him up for today. Maybe they just worried about his debut being a surprise emergency start in Colorado? Ullola could start Saturday in Seattle on 5 days rest. Great ballpark to start in, Mariners already have 5 players with 12+ Ks, and he is the only AAA starter with TOR potential to replace Brown. Arrighetti is close but I also consider him already here as projected #6. If Brown misses extensive time, then the need is a guy who has TOR stuff, not Jason Alexander or Colton Gordon. Might as well use this time to see if he has MLB in him.
that doesn’t change the fact that it was an epic **** up that rightfully cost an assistant GM his job.
I don't see Yordan playing LF in Colorado. I expect Correa to get his first day off. Altuve and Walker could get days off but they are both very hot. They may decide Pena goes another series not starting 3 in a row. Maybe Paredes returns Tuesday instead of Monday and they play down a man?
Lineup predictions: Today: SS Pena DH Alvarez 2B Altuve 3B Correa 1B Walker LF Loperfido RF Smith C Diaz CF Meyers Tomorrow: SS Pena DH Alvarez 2B Altuve 3B Correa 1B Walker CF Meyers RF Smith C Diaz LF Matthews Wed: SS Pena DH Alvarez 2B Altuve 3B Correa 1B Walker LF Loperfido RF Smith C Diaz CF Meyers they’ve pulled their stars early in several games, they have an off day Thursday, and they have Paredes coming back, so there is no lead to load manage any of the stars this series. They need to win games.
So you are expecting Paredes to miss the entire series? I thought bereavement leave was only 3 days like maternity leave? If he is with the team and not in the lineup in a flyball park like Coors, that's a problem for me.
Sure, Javier in Colorado probably sucks, but it would suck way worse to lose 2030 for Arrighetti over that one start.
Shouldn't Paredes be back Tuesday? Wednesday at the absolute latest? Or did they turn this into a 7 day thing?
They asked Dana on the broadcast yesterday when Paredes would return. He said there was a chance he was in the lineup today but probably will be tomorrow because he’d be traveling today (I would assume from Mexico).
Bereavement is between 3 and 7 days, it is up to the player and team to determine the length within those limits. I am assuming that between the infield surplus and looming off day, they will give him the max. Of course I could be wrong. ETA looks like he’ll be back tomorrow. In that case my guess would be the Pena and Correa will each sit one game of this series, given how hot Walker, Altuve, and Yordan are and how fresh Paredes should be.
See my comment above. I’m guessing Snake missed Dana’s answer to when he would be back in the lineup on the broadcast yesterday. Should be tomorrow.
