an era no higher that 4, for starters...but all they were billing him as when they signed him was that he's an inning-eater, and he'll take alot of strain off our bullpen. he's not coming close to either of those. are you telling me that you think between 5 and 6 innings, and a 5-6 era is acceptable from our #3? hell, our #5 even?
An ERA under 4? Do you know how many starters had an ERA under 4 last year? 38! For all 30 teams. 38! Only 3 teams had 3 starters with an ERA under 4: Angels, Padres, Tigers. In this age of baseball, if you expect your 3rd starter to have an ERA under 4, you'll be dissapointed. Yeah, Wood did good last year. But he has career 4.10 ERA. He's never had a season above 5.00 though.
it's a long season... important thing is this year we have the bats to back up bad starts and we got the W tonight.
whatever....wasnt the original question how much longer can he pitch like this before garner pulls the plug on him?
I'm not as worried about Woody since Sampson and Wandy have stepped up so far this season. I expect Woody to improve roughly about as much as those two will likely drop off, eventually. It will all even out.
Williams, actually, wasn't billed as an innings eater. One of the reasons the Astros were looking for relievers who could pitch multiple innings was the very fact that they were not going to rely on Williams to pitch deep into games.
I think he has been horrible, and consistently horrible, we blast players like Wandy for his troubles, and Woody has been WAY worse than Wandy. Give Woody 2 or 3 more starts, and if he stinks....bring up a young arm. DD
your expectation is way too high. i'm not suggesting you should be satisfied with a 5.00 ERA. but if Woody finishes the season around 4.50, i'm fine with that. man...i can't believe that i'm still surprised at the negativity after a game like last night...and i can't believe that i'm still surprised at how quickly people jump to conclusions regarding baseball.
No kidding. He was never, ever, never, ever spoken of in that manner. It's almost like some people just make stuff up to justify their opinions. Damn pesky, them facts.
He's had two bad starts in a row... preceded by a great start... preceded by a so-so start. Using words like "horrible, and consistently horrible..." are pretty dumb when there have only been 4 starts, and you can clearly dissect each one of them. Woody is what he is... a guy who's going to have an ERA between 3.65 and 5 when its all said and done, along with being somebody who's faced post-season pressure before.
Oh my... you can't be this short-sighted. Hell, I can think of at least one pitcher ON OUR TEAM last year who got paid way more than $6 million. NL - Pettite, Peavy, Suppan, Maddux, Penny, Hudson, Morris, Marquis, Mulder AL - Westbrook, Contreras, Meche, Millwood, Freddy Garcia, Garland, Washburn, Buehrle, Randy Johnson, Beckett.
I have a feeling Woody is going to be the worst of our starters in the long run based on his non-Petco Park numbers the last several years and his age. The more interesting question, to me, is what happens if Roger joins the club. If Sampson and Wandy are pitching better than Woody, who loses their job? Of course, that's a good problem to have because if there's even a question, it means Sampson and Wandy are doing pretty decently.
lolol. he wasn't? it's a "fact" that he was never, ever, never spoken of in that manner? pretty impressive that you never missed a media soundbyte in your life. "no he wasn't" is always a strong way of making a point. especially when you have no clue what you're talking about. woody was most certainly billed as an innings-eater, which is absolutely what he has been throughout his career. that's all the local media said about him. great at getting deep into ball games, and he pitches great at minute maid park.
who billed him as an innings-eater??? did you read it?? hear it?? i certainly didn't, and a look at his stats over the past 5 years or so certainly wouldn't support that. not to mention, he spent a good deal of time in our division where we saw him pitch quite a bit. i follow the astros through the local media religiously...i don't recall ever hearing them refer to him as an innings-eater. if they did, i would have dismissed it because we knew better.
Perhaps you are thinking of Jennings? The last two years Williams has made 53 starts and averaged less than 6 innings per start. There is NO ONE of importance in the Astros organization who would ever have said that Williams will be an "innings-eater" in 2007 or 2008.
I'd love to see a single quote that says what you're claiming. If that was true, there would be some proof. Woody isn't going to pitch alot of innings. He'll probably pitch 5 or 6 most nights, but if he can produce anywhere close to his 12-5, 3.65 record last season, the quality of his production will outweigh the diminished quantity. And sheesh, there's alot of overreaction here based on 4 starts in April.
