The "win" stat for pitchers is garbage anyways, doesn't really tell you much.

Similar to RBI for example.

Over ~250 PAs, Fiers looked like a Cy Young contender rocking a 2.36 ERA and 2.81 FIP last year without the benefit of pitching ~ 1 inning/game. A few years back, Mike Fiers even had one 30 PA stretch that he didn't even give up a hit. As such, I think it is easy to conclude that splits for pitchers at 250 PAs and less are probably too small for results based stats.

Fiers is an illustration of why you should be careful with FIP in relatively small samples. Unless you are working with a sample big enough for HR/FB to stabilize (400 FB), stick with xFIP (sample of at least 70 BIP) or kwFIP (less than 70 BIP).

 

I'm saying not to divide up stats into situations, but look at big picture on results-based stats. So say a reliever gave up over a half a season's worth of runs in those 7.2 innings, it is going to take a lot of innings to smooth that number out. Some things like velocity, movement of pitches can tell a lot of information in a small sample size. It doesn't take much to see that when Giles's slider isn't working, he has problems.

 

It is hard enough to try to use FIP over ERA in under 600 inning increments.

F**k it, we'll act like we're still beating the Rangers even if we're beating the White Sox.

 

But beating the Rangers is so enjoyable. They put up a good fight and still lose to us and that made it that much better. And I remember watching them and their fans and broadcasters bask in our misery when we had all those 100 plus game losing seasons and dominating them now makes it all the more fun to watch.

Nope...you misread my post. I asked why would you not trust Giles in a SAVE SITUATION. he has been perfect in SAVE SITUATIONS this season and has the highest percentage in the AL since the beginning of 2017.

In a separate post I have remarked how his splits in non-save vs save is probably a historic bad difference for pitchers with double digit saves.
