I still have my concerns about him and Corporan.

He had a good thing with castro and looked really comfortable the first game this year (along with his epic ST game against the Nats regulars).

Hoes has to be wondering what it will take to get him on the field. He's been noticeably better against right handed pitchers in his brief career, so as analytical as the Astros are, it should't be a lefty/righty thing.

He held righties to a 0.200 BA and 0.560 OPS last year. That's good to outstanding by any standard and better than most of the righties in the bullpen. He's only "significantly better" against lefties because he held them to an absurd 0.400 OPS. You don't really allow ERs to a righty or lefty, so I'm not sure what that measure is.

And blown saves for non-closers are dumb. One was in the 7th inning where he gave up 2 unearned runs. The other 2 were 8th inning outings where he allowed inherited runners to score, but none of his own. He gave up no earned runs in any of those blown saves, and none were even save situations for him because he wouldn't have pitched the 9th.

A few days ago, you argued that the concept of closer was a dumb one - Porter was managing exactly this way. He used his one good bullpen guy against the heart of the lineup in the 8th. In the 9th, you had 2 out of 3 lefties coming up, including the only really dangerous hitter left. You put your lefty out there and you either eliminate their biggest threat or get to face him in a favorable lefty-lefty matchup. It's exactly the right strategic thing to do, especially when your lefty has also been really good against righties in his brief career. And it's better than the alternative of throwing one of your remaining crappy righty pitchers out there to face their one good (lefty) hitter.

Who would you have run out there instead and why?

Yeah...I don't see why he doesn't get PT over Krauss. I get that Krauss can play 1B, but I've seen Krauss in the OF before Hoes...

Hoes wasn't bad last year. Similar to Grossman; got on base at a high clip, and didn't ground out to second every time like Krauss

Every "earned run" he allowed last year was when a right handed batter was at the plate. Those blown saves you highlighted, whee inherited runners scored were the result of right handed batters. He was worse against righties, and the bad results came when the games were close. You said yourself that the sample size wasn't really enough to say whether he would be serviceable against righties in the future, but he's looked significantly worse against righties in all close game opportunities (and this year, he's been horrible against righties...likely regressing towards his norm).

And yes, I'm all for not bringing in set guys for every "save" situation, but that didn't mean I was in favor of bringing in just "anybody" (let alone the lefty specialist who has struggled to get "anybody" out this year).

Qualls isn't a remaining "crappy" righty pitcher. And while I don't like Fields, his numbers are far better in save situations. (Since you apparently love numbers more than actual results).

Getting caught up in lefty/righty matchups can be almost just as narrow minded as having the same 9th inning guy in any game with a 3 run lead. You saw how your tactical suggestion backfired... I doubt he puts chapman in that situation again next time (lesson learned).

With the exception of Altuve and Fowler, every single starter is hitting below .200 with OBP below .300. Sure, these are all still small sample sizes, but how Porter can continue to sit Hoes is beyond me. Hoes may end up the same as the others, but at least give him a chance.

For that matter, why isn't Guzman getting more at bats?

Guzman struggles against RHP, but he does great work against LHP. He is best platooned with a left handed hitter (which they are trying with Krauss but he has been an epic failure so far)

    .815 OPS vs LHP
    .689 OPS vs RHP

For that matter his career stats have been grossly deflated by PetCo park, if platooned correctly this year he really could have a good year.

Hoes on the other hand has no demonstrated trend so far in his early career. Absolutely no reason Presley should be getting so many more AB's

That .689 OPS would be higher than most of the starting lineup. :)

That is the way the replay system should work. Porter immediately asked for the review without stalling to get additional confirmation from the booth. It took a minimal amount of time and they got the call right.

That OKC lineup has just as good a chance of putting up runs as the non-Castro Astros.

Also, too many outs given up on the base paths today.

If Clemens could consistently get it together, he and Oberholtzer would make that Michael Bourn trade look good.

i think obie already makes that trade look good.

ed wade did a great job. we would be in better shape if he was our gm over the last few years. although luhnow did well in some trades (smith, hader).. so it's hard to say. i am very happy with oberholtzer though. i feel like he can really pitch in this league.
