I dont either. But its hard not to seek solutions when we are struggling so mightily. Its hard not to imagine a guy playing like Berkman is now making us better. Relying exclusively on bringing guys up through a weak farm is going to be a very long rebuild. Envisioning the club being this bad for another 2-3 years, perhaps longer is almost unfathomable. It makes one desperate. And although most desperate notions are bad ones, its difficult not to have them anyway.
Berkman on the team would still lead to us going nowhere this season, but we might be 3rd/4th in the NL Central instead of dead last and worst in the MLB. At least this way we can get the #1 pick in the draft.
In what baseball universe is a .380 OBP mediocre? That is borderline elite. And in that period that you highlighted, Berkman still had a higher OBP and SLG% than Lee. Batting average alone is not that meaningful. And I can't speak for the rest of the posters in this thread, but my entire point of mentioning Berkman was to show him some more love in the face of the crap he's gotten from a bunch of posters in this forum.

Here is your post which doesn't include what he's done over the last few games: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=6212638&postcount=6 In that period that you highlighted, Berkman still had a higher OBP and SLG% than Lee. And batting average alone is not that meaningful. I think you're just hoping for Berkman to fail because of how much you trashed him last season. And I can't speak for the rest of the posters in this thread, but my entire point of mentioning Berkman was to show him some more love in the face of the crap he's gotten from a bunch of posters in this forum over the last couple of years.
that's like defending your ex-girlfriend who let herself go before you dumped her and then she got back in shape and started dating a guy you really hate. i will always love berkman for his time here in houston, but i sure as hell will not celebrate his accomplishments when he's wearing a cardinals jersey.
Except that I for one don't believe that Berkman let himself go. I think the injuries hampered him. He also had a shoulder problem coming into the previous season where he couldn't lift his arm over his head or something to that effect. In a sport full of cheaters and douchebags, Berkman is a true class act and an elite player, even if he's at the tailend of his career. And he didn't bail on us. If that were the case, I wouldn't be pulling for him at all. He very well may come way down to earth in the 2nd half of the season, to the joy of some of you. Then you guys can pick up where you left off with trashing him. I won't take part in that.
I love Berkman and don't understand the hate towards the guy. He did everything you could want for this team over a span of a decade. He was the face of the franchise and the face of Houston. He was/is a great person and that's why he is so loved in Saint Louis. Berkman wanted to come back to Houston, the Astros just didn't have plans for him. Now fans are bitter towards him? Doesn't even make sense.
Your right, I was looking at his June stats instead, my apologies. By the way in June he is hitting .227 with an OBP of .321 but still slugging very well. All I said was before ripping him OR praising him to wait to season's end and see where he ends up. So I was actually defending him against those accusing him of dogging it last season. Not sure why you think I am hoping he fails since I have repeatly praised his performance in the first half of the season. Just because I was hard on him last season because he set high standards and wasn't living up to them doesn't mean I don't remember all the great moments he gave us. I will say, when he plays the Stros...I hope he fails miserable.
r934, We're all ultimately on the same side here. I just didn't like some of the stuff directed at him in recent years, not just in this forum but beyond. At the end of the day, the Berkman era in Houston is over. I just don't like seeing his image tarnished unfairly and I do believe that most of the stuff directed at him, especially since going to STL, has been dead wrong.
the team who nobody talks about that really should be the one with egg on their face is the yankees. what the hell good would lance be doing us? you think his stick would win us 40+ extra games this season?? we got a good reliever for him, and who knows, if we are good again in 3 years, he could re-sign and finish up here.
I don't think anybody was saying that we shouldn't have moved Berkman. We should've done it sooner actually. Same with Oswalt.
Sounds like Brownie is on Andrew McCutchen's personal payroll. He has really been hammering home that he was an All-Star snub.
Heh... Berkman HR. Leads the NL now. Just heard it was the longest HR in Busch Stadium since it opened in '06... 450+ feet.
Who else doesnt see a 2nd half surge this year? Considering they are at .337 right now, even playing .400 the rest of the way might seem like one. That would put them around .370 at the end of the season. Still good for last by a comfortable margin unless KC has a complete meltdown.
Keppinger just saved Wandy's ass there. That would've been real ugly. Prob another run and still only 1 out with a man on 2nd or 3rd.
Wandy has a real good body of work so this start probably doesn't hurt his trade value to much but it certainly doesn't help. Pirates played small ball to perfection that inning...infield hit, bloop hit, walk, sac fly and squeeze equal 2 runs.
