Sure - but then he went to Round Rock and made swing adjustments and was doing really well there. Are you saying we gave him 6 weeks and that's all it took to decide he'll never be any good?
Sometimes playing time in the Bigs isn't the best method for development, especially if the player is floundering. The Astros would probably rather have him starting every day in AAA but Quintero's injury forced their hand. Spending an entire year below the Mendoza line will do wonders for his confidence and development. At least he was hitting .280 in Round Rock.
Regardless, it's not as bad as you've made it sound. He's made 4 starts in the 7 games he's been back. It's not like he's been stuck riding the pine.
If they wanted him in RR, they could have brought up JR House or something like that as the backup catcher here.
If you're going to bring up JR House, you may as well give me a jersey, league minimum, and dugout seats for every game. It's basically the same thing.
you gotta laugh at this one...this game is 100% cecil cooper's fault, and please dont argue otherwise. watching that 8th inning develop was one of the dumbest displays of management i've ever seen. apologies to phil garner and jimy williams for anything bad i ever said about them. this idiot is the most inept i've ever seen. he's just clearly in over his head.
what did you want him to do? Last time he put valverde in with the bases loaded he also gave up a 2 run single. Today. Same situation. He decides to leave brocail in and he chokednit up as well. There are no options you just have to rely on pure luck that we don't choke. And also that 9th inning was terrible. Loretta, Berkman decide to go at the 1st 2 pitches. Tejada with the weak swing right after bourn stole 2nd as well. It seems the only person with a clue was carlos.
2 outs in the 8th inning. you're up 3-1. laroche hrs, 3-2. next batter gets HBP (maybe having control problems?). next batter gets a hit (yup, probably doesnt have it at this point). next batter walks to load the bases (ok, SURELY he wont risk letting a guy who just let 4 straight batters reach safely pitch to a 5th in this crucial of a situation, right?? nobody's that dumb. you need one out to preserve the lead and you have your closer available. an EASY call in this situation, RIGHT??). all the meanwhile he has valverde getting ready in the pen. for what??? to put in once brocail gives up the lead? next batter drives in 2. out walks the idiot to pull brocail (for what? too little too late genius). it just looks pathetic watching him walk out to the mound to pull brocail at this point. whoever's arguing with me, please don't. this really isn't debatable whatsoever. 75% of this forum's posters could manage games better than cooper. and i honestly believe that.
If Valverde is still your closer then you give him the ball again. If Valverde gives up runs then the fans will b**** and moan and call Coop an idiot in light of what happened last time. But it's still the right move. If you have any confidence in your closer, you give him the ball in that situation no matter what happened in his last outing.
